Summary: Humanizing Hannibal Lecter
Review: Hannibal is not your typical mystery-thriller. Instead, Thomas Harris delivers a psychologically provoking work that is, in many ways, subtler and more mature than its predecessors, while retaining the richness of detail for which he is famous. Harris masterfully uses allegory and metaphor to gradually challenge the reader's comfortable preconceptions about right versus wrong, loyalty versus dishonor and the difference between madness and evil. The last few chapters will leave the reader breathless with what is, on the surface, an unexpected twist of epic porportions. Yet at a deeper level, it delivers the logical culmination of a process of transformation that began for both Starling and Lecter in Silence of the Lambs. This conclusion provides the fulfillment of plot threads from throughout the series and was, to this reviewer, eminently satisfying. Readers will tend to either love or hate this novel. Either way, the book will intellectually and emotionally engage the reader, leaving him or her with a rich set of images and feelings that will linger long after. -- Scott Loban

Summary: Good bye, Hannibal, and good riddance!
Review: I hated this book and the characters!! I really enjoy mystery/thrillers but this was too much. I read both Red Dragon and Silence of the Lambs and loved them. So, I was looking forward to Hannibal. I am so glad that I borrowed a copy and did not spend my cash on it. I felt that the whole intent was to discribe the most despicable characters doing the most despicable things. In that sense, it was a success. If you expect the quality and suspense of the first two books, I think you will be disappointed.

Summary: Evil Wins Out or How Hannibal Became the Victim
Review: I love Harris' work -- all of it. But do him a favor DON'T BUY THIS BOOK. "Red Dragon/Manhunter", "Silence of the Lambs" were classics -- both book and movie. The 1st 1/2 of Hannibal was looking good with plot twists and characters galore. At some point, I think Harris either sold out or got bored. In his effort to explain the tragedy of Hannibal Lector, Harris tried to make him a hero whilst still carrying fatal and unredeemable flaws. It doesn't work. I wanted to throw the book across the room when I finished. Please Thom, explain to us what you did here. -Mike

Summary: should have stopped at the last hannal novel.
Review: i was not too satisfied with this one. i think they should have left well enough alone with the last novel,The Silence of the Lambs. one Hannibal is enough. a little boring and out landish in parts, especially the brain part.

Summary: Good read, not to over the top
Review: I enjoyed reading this book and definitely thought some of the content could have been adapted to the movie better. Sometimes the author would elude to things that were totally out of place and made no sense. I would recommend this to someone.

Summary: Something different than expected, but definitely exciting
Review: Moving away from his usual "Silence of the Lambs" formula for novel writing, as Harris used in both the SOTL and Red Dragon novels, "Hannibal" is something much different. I will not dispute that Harris was probably saying "I dare you to make a movie out of this" when he wrote it, as it's gruesomely violent elements would have been more than a little questionable if represented on screen exactly the way they played in the book, but that's what makes this book interesting; The fact that someone can go and see the movie's adaptation, then come back and read a very different story in the novel. It's refreshing to see an author who isn't afraid to stray away from the 'righteous hero pulling through in the end and conquering evil' formula. The ending may be unexpected, and frankly wrong in some people's eyes, but in the end it is only the author who can say how the characters would act. "Hannibal" is ambitious and intriguing, though vile and disturbing at times. But, who could expect less from a book named after a mass serial killer/cannibal?

Summary: MY FAVORITE BOOK EVER
Review: The book "Hannibal" by the great author Thomas Harris is a suberb work of art. This #1 New York Times bestselling book was entertaining from start to finish. Not a moment was wasted. Being slightly better than "Silence of the Lambs", Thomas Harris has certainly outdone himself. It took me about four weeks to read, and it was very hard to put it down. Even though it took ten years to get this wonderful book, it was really worth the wait. The great characters Clarice Starling, Jack Crawford, and new characters like Mason Verger, ... Pazzi, and of course, Dr. Hannibal Lecter, the cannibal are back again, and better than ever. I cannot be more honest, this was one of the best books ever, and I have read a lot of books. If the book was over five-hundred dollars, I would buy it. It's that good! I would really like you to buy this book and enjoy it like I did. Thank you.

Summary: the book vs. the movie
Review: Hannibal the book is by far much better than the movie, as is usually the case. One thing I know for certain, without giving away the plot, is that I will never look at pigs the same way. Hannibal is truly clever and intelligent; and, though, his character makes him out to be cruel and inhumane, you almost admire him because he is above the rest. The ending made my stomach turn. Then, it surprised me. A great read... it goes quick once you're into it.

Summary: Slightly disappointing
Review: This book is known to most readers. I read it (whole thing) after seeing the movie. The book differs in some characters and in the ending, compared to the film. Harris writes quite well and uses an intresting technique to describe the happenings and feelings of the characters. The ending was a put-off for me, because I dont think it is 100% realistic. Starlings character would not do that (If you know what I mean). Still I recommend this book to those intrested in the macabre and chilling...

Summary: People look at this book the wrong way..
Review: I see a lot of reviews and people aren't liking it much. I think they are looking at it from the wrong view. Its not about psychological depth anymore, as it was with Silence of the Lambs. If you read Silence of the Lambs, you'd know that Lecter and Starling are professionally (even personally) intrigued with each other and that Hannibal- merely expands on that relationship past the glass barrier that existed in the Silence of the Lambs. Its not about Starling trying to figure him out & trying to get him to help her anymore, its about the two of them finding their common ground beyond his so-called "dungeon". Dr. Lecter himself is merely indulging himself in Clarice and she doesn't totally allow it but she merely tolerates it.
Its like some twisted love story... Also has a different ending than the movie. If you found the movie lacking something meaningful, turn to the book for a good ending. I find both endings satisfying considering the markets the movie was aiming at and the market the book was aiming at.
