Rating: Summary: Absolutely amazing Review: This is the best book i have ever read! It is easily Thomas Harris' best piece of writing and it is fresh and exciting. The adrenalin pumps through your veins as you turn each page anticipating what is about to happen. I was unable to put it down once I had started it. It was a shame it had to end, I was willing it to go on forever.
Rating: Summary: Hannibal and Clarice doing the Grand Tour together ?? No!! Review: I thought,'The Silence of The Lambs'was about as good as that sort of book gets.(6 out of 5 stars) The followup however,I found disappointing. I mean,Hannibal as a 'goody'??(well sort of)I don't think so. Hannibal and Clarice touring the Great Opera Houses of the world ??Nooooo..please Noooo. I mean where do we go from here?? This, surely, means the end of 'Hannibal the Cannibal'as one of the great, and certainly more entertaining, characters in the literature of our time. The book had a few 'thrilling'moments, but all up,I was very disappointed.
Rating: Summary: Good, not as much of a page turner as Silence of the Lambs Review: I enjoyed this book. Though, the story did seem to drag a little. Silence of the lambs was harder to put down, and, is still Mr. Harris' best work, in my opinion.
Rating: Summary: An author shouldn't fall in love with his characters. Review: Uh oh! Maybe it hasn't been success, but something's spoiled Mr. Harris, who now wants us to understand Hannibal's inner child. Mushy as an antebellum romance and with Clarice Starling merely a cipher, this book is redeemed mainly by its early sections. Set in Florence, they are alive in a way which contrasts sharply with the cringingly predictible rest of the book. harris's new face expression: "bleed out." Whenever someone dies, he uses the phrase, resulting in the marriage of slopped editing with disappointing writing and a mystery more tantalizing than the novel's..
Rating: Summary: It's Horror! What did you expect???? Review: It totally astounds me to see the number of people giving "Hannibal" one star because they hated the ending. Have you forgotten Harris is a horror novelist, not a detective story writer? Don't confuse dashed expectations with bad writing. Our worst nightmares SHOULD be profoundly disturbing. I agree with the writer who perceived the ending as Harris' way of thumbing his nose at Hollywood. But don't call the book poor writing, please!
Rating: Summary: all of five stars Review: It's not easy being the 1134th reviewer of this novel, as mine will get lost in the chaff. However, I truly felt compelled to write a couple of notes about this eagerly awaited sequel by an author who rarely publishes. I absolutely loved "Hannibal" and was gratified that I didn't pay much attention to the "mixed" reviews I had read. Yes, there is a grotesque quality to Harris' writing, but it was much less offensive than I had anticipated and was a rich seasoning to the character of the antagonists. I must admit, I saved money by buying the abridged version of the book on tape and now will read the entire hardcover book to get every syllable Thomas Harris wrote. Please Mr. Harris, write another novel and don't wait another five years to publish!
Rating: Summary: Very disappointing sequel Review: Thomas Harris seems more interested in giving geographical and historical lessons in his latest book than any real story developments. Having thoroughly enjoyed "Silence Of The Lambs", I was anxious to read "Hannibal" but came away feeling very disappointed.
Rating: Summary: Outrageous, audacious ending saves Hannibal from mediocrity Review: I must admit, as many readers of this book were, I was a bit disappointed with the second tale of Hannibal Lecter and Clarice Starling. Far too much time is spent on lesser, newer characters, and the subplots are just not that interesting. But the ending--WHOA! You can't possibly predict it. It's bold and outrageous. You have to read it over to make sure you really indeed read what you read. It's an easy and mostly satisfying read with a terrific ending. Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: I never thought I'd fall in love with a cannibal! Review: I never thought I'd fall in love with a cannibal, but Dr. Lechter isn't just any cannibal, he's the cannibal with good taste. Or shall we say, exquisite taste? His behavior isn't always in the best taste but who cares, it's always surprisingly gory and fits the scene. No, it isn't "literature," but Harris does have a way of tingling the palette with juicy phrases and satisfyingly detailed descriptions, especially of places, especially Florence, Italy. It's the best "good read" I've had for awhile and I didn't want it to end. Worst thing about it is Harris' inability to develop female character (he's a bit light on the male character as well). I have no idea why Hector Lechter would be the least bit interested in Clarice Starling who appears to be a dull, not overly bright hick. But perhaps I'm simply envious. Or perhaps Hector lacks good taste in his interpersonal as opposed to culinary relationships. Can't wait for the sequel and hope I live to see it (took 9 years for this one!)
Rating: Summary: Slow to start and an ending that still leaves me bewildered Review: The story moves slowly but does keep the reader interrested. After all it isabout Hannibal or is it? It has extensive information regarding the characters from "Silence of the Lambs" and goes into depth Hannibal's background. Harris hinged on almost over informing the reader. I think as areader that we don't need to be lead down the path so to speak when it comesto seeing the story as a whole as intensly as he provided for us. It was at times tideous. But Harris was able to hold us through the book and I have to say that the ending was totally unexpected. Almost to the point that it was not a real ending but an illusion of a madman.I still have difficulty with the ending. No closure and a sequal may not be viable but Harris being Harris I would not be surprised to see one.I would be interrested to see how he would pull it off.
