Rating: Summary: Disappointing Review: I suppose I should have expected the sick images; I knew who the book was about. But what I didn't expect was the ridiculous departure in character by Clarice. Chalking it up to being drugged and hypnotized was weak. Her end was totally out of character and unbelievable. The only reason I didn't give the book only one star is that it fully kept my attention throughout. The suspense was good. But as I finished it, I almost regretted wasting my time.
Rating: Summary: To much Hype Review: Hannibal was on okay read. I was expecting a bit more. I also had some problems on how it was writen. It seems that at times there was a narraitor telling the story, then at times it was as if it was in thrid person. I also didn't like the ending, even though someone told it to me. Over all it wasn't that bad. I'd say read it if you have nothing better to do and you can get it in paperback.
Rating: Summary: Hannibal Math Review: Hannibal Lector's obsessiveness over food, wine, furnishings, flowers and Italian culture transformed the serial killer of the previous novels into someone sounding an awful lot like TV's Frasier Crane. I became weak with laughter as I imagined Hannibal speaking in Frasier's voice. I also determined that the character of Hannibal himself could be reduced to a simple equation:Dr. Frasier Crane + Martha Stewart = Dr. Hannibal Lector.
Rating: Summary: Couldn't put it down... Review: I recently finished "Red Dragon" just 2 weeks ago, and couldn't wait for May 23rd when the paperback of "Hannibal" came out. I bought it right away, and couldn't put it down. I thought it was as good as "Red Dragon", if not better and more lyrical. I just finished it last night (part of it reading by flashlight, as we'd lost power due to a storm). I read a lot of books and some I have to almost force myself to read - not this one. And rarely does a book give me bad dreams - this one did. Although not scary like a ghost story, it's tension and suspense were truly absorbing. And I loved the ending. Loved the treatment of Barney - he's a great minor character. And I won't hear the name Mason without a little shudder. Some have said that Lecter is no longer scary - I think he's even scarier, especially in the scenes where he interacts with an unsuspecting public. I like it that he has a soft spot for women (the signora, Clarice, Margot...). Thanks, Thomas Harris for a wonderful novel!
Rating: Summary: Not as good as Silence of the Lambs Review: This book takes a little more time to get into than Silence of the Lambs. It is still enjoyable, just give it time. The ending will certainly surprise you as it did me. Thomas Harris is an excellent author, read his others.
Rating: Summary: SILLY! Review: I can think of no greater disappointment than when one of the penultimate 'bad guys' of thrillers, Hannibal Lechter, ceases to be scary. In this sequel, we're meant to understand and empathize with Lechter because of his rotten childhood (puh-leeze! ) And Clarice is nothing more than a wimpy victim in this one. What happened to that heroic woman we loved in Silence of the Lambs? Oh, I wish that this one could be unwritten, so that my opinion of Hannibal, Clarice, and Thomas Harris could have remained intact!
Rating: Summary: Thomas Harris forgot that Hannibal Lecter was a serial Kille Review: He was seven years old to give continuity for a work that was a show, but he got lost completely, and gave a sad end for Hannibal Lecter and Clarisse Starling. "the Bone Colector" of Jeffery Deaver is very better following this same style.
Rating: Summary: I know how the good Dr. feels.... Review: So, after all the horrors witnessed by Dr. Lecter, from his troublesome childhood, to brilliant insanity, to being locked in that windowless Baltimore dungeon for so many years, what *is* it that finally makes him scream aloud? -- Flying transatlantic coach next to a screaming baby and a fidgety preadolescent. Hey Doc, I been there too; I feel your pain. Harris is a powerful writer, and the books is fraught with images that stuck with me for a while: a flashback to Lecter's childhood. An unusual meal towards the end. I shan't spoil these scenes with details, suffice it to say that their vivid descriptions and, um, "creative" scenarios left me a tad green. But overall, such things are what I expected from the novel, and I wasn't disappointed. "Silence" is a hard act to follow... even for Mr. Harris.
Rating: Summary: Italian Cannibal Review: I enjoyed "Hannibal". Not as much as Harris' others. Yet, in this, I found a more relaxed, even romantic view of a now Italian cannibal. Not as graphic, not as terroristic yet much more introspective.... I liked the ending & 'tis no wonder Jody Foster bowed out for the film! Would she dare want to be known as Mrs. Lecter? *smiling* If you enjoy graphic murderous thrillers, read "Messiah" by Boris Starling.
Rating: Summary: The Biggest Disappointment of the Year Review: After reading both The Red Dragon and The Silence of the Lambs, I couldn't wait to get my hands on Hannibal. After waiting eleven years for this sequel, I expected the same suspense filled, totally frightening thriller, Harris had written before. Unfortunately, this is not the case. This book does not fill you with terror. Instead, many of the really "scary" scenes are just silly and disgusting. The characters, so well developed in the two previous novels, have become cartoon characters. The plot is not suspenseful, but very predictable and gets bogged down in many places. And, the ending is ridiculous and unbelievable. The one element that made The Red Dragon and The Silence of the Lambs such great books, stories you were afraid to read when you were home alone, was their plausibility; the idea that this could really happen. That feeling is completely absent in this novel. The only positive thing I can say about Hannibal, is that you get a very nice walking tour of Florence, Italy. But of course, that's not what I was looking for, from Thomas Harris. If you want to read a fast paced, edge of your seat thriller, that keeps you up all night, this is NOT the book. A total disappointment!
