Summary: Back to Par and with a Vengeance
Review: EG's latest is back on par with her first two. After a spate of progressively deteriorating plotlines, her last finally turned the tide around and the current hit as about as good as anything in the series.

Does EG think all men, or just Lynley, are fools? Is Havers really a genius after all? Does her Pakistani neighbor really have the hots for her? Will the Lynley-Helen marriage endure? Will the St. James's finally be blessed (sic) with a child? Are all Americans truly as despicable as EG portrays them? Stay tuned for the answer to these and other thrilling questions.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Just great, but Lynley starts to be a pain...
Review: Having been a George fan since "In the presence of the enemy" ( which is still the best in the series ), Pursuit does not disappoint. Only Lynley's private life starts to get somewhat tireing as it is so difficult to relate to. His as often in English(set) criminal stories ( like also in the Dalgleish series )upperclass arrogance and downright stupid behavor is really annoying. Is that just fiction or are the Police Superindendents in the UK really these common bastards ?

Summary: Superb !!!
Review: The two-year wait was worth it: this book is almost relentlessly perfect.

Ms. George always chooses complex themes and in this novel she focuses on the aloneness of self and the essential unknowability of others. "In Pursuit" roams deeply and widely through the effects of this aloneness/unknowingness on our lives, loves, relationships, and - of course - our deaths.

George has created interesting new characters, as she always does, to support her theme, but the familiar ones are present too, though slightly less knowable than usual. Again, a deft touch on the part of Elizabeth George.

If there were a ten-star catagory "In Pursuit of the Proper Sinner" would definitely carry the banner.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: George's best book ever; one of the best mysteries ever
Review: You just don't want this book to end; I found I was equally certain of every suspect since George is so persuasive and her plots work so well. I am an inveterate mystery reader, and I mean it: this is one of the best ever written.

Summary: Elizabeth George at her best
Review: After reading this latest installment of Inspector Lynley and Barbara Havers I can only congratulate Ms. George for her continuing succesful way of writing one book after another and still creating more suspense from book to book. I love this one, although you should know more about the book before "Deception on his mind" before reading this great novel.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Only fair
Review: I really looked forward to this book; after "Deception on His Mind" I thought that I'd finally turn into an Elizabeth George fan. Unfortunately, this was not the case, but I did realize why I never quite finish her books. "Deception on his Mind" focused on Barbara Havers, who is much more interesting than Thomas Lynley and his dullsville aristocratic pals. The best parts of "In Pursuit" are the ones that feature disheveled, undiplomatic, smart-as-hell Havers, who operates purely on her instincts, and who's in the doghouse for events in "Deception." Even her adored Lynley thinks she was in the wrong, and Barbara will do anything to regain his trust.

E. George writes well and plots like nobody's business. The scenes in London's S/M underworld are great, especially when Havers or fellow-cop Winston Nkata are involved. I hope that George focuses her next book on them. Lynley and his turgid marital problems put me to sleep.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Delighted to see everyone reviewing agrees with me.
Review: I read all the other reviews posted and agree with everything in them. I couldn't put it down even though I wanted it to last as long as possible. I still think the best was the first one of the series but this one is a close second. Let's hope the next one is here soon.

Summary: Another Elizabeth George winner!
Review: Any mystery lover worth his/her salt surely has to have Elizabeth George on their "must read" list! After reading George's first book, I was hooked, and now own and have thoroughly enjoyed all of her previous ten books. I eagerly awaited this latest book, and have not been disappointed. As usual her language is beautiful, no need for graphic sex scenes or foul language to try to catch one's attention - it is a pleasure to read such evocative writing. The plotting of this book is clever, and one can envisage each scene as it unfolds. George describes the countryside so perfectly, one feels as if one is there, and her understanding of England and the English, be it in language or by descriptive prose, makes the reader envious of her abilities. She is certainly in the genre of P.D. James and Ruth Rendell. This time we have Barbara Havers working in London away from her boss, Tommy Lynley, who has been called to Derbyshire by an old friend to help in solving two grisly murders. Havers, in spite of Lynley's orders, manages to get involved and has a great rapport with Nkata, the member of the team selected by Lynley to help him in Barbara's place, after her initial restment of him for taking her place. The story is full of twists and turns, ensuring that I had some sleepless nights as I hated to put the book down! I now await Elizabeth George's eleventh book with great anticipation. If you are anxious to read a big, beautifully written mystery, do read In Pursuit of the Proper Sinner - you will not be disappointed. George's writing puts to shame so many of today's "shocker" authors - if only they would realise that many readers are turned off by explicit sex and gore - they accomplish nothing by writing this way - there is too much lowering of standards at present, without having to write filth. I would respectfully suggest that any aspiring author read any Elizabeth George book - he/she could not fail to be impressed.

Summary: Another wonderful outing from Elizabeth George
Review: I always wait with anticipation for George's next novel and this one did not disappoint me. I tried to savor it, but of course I read it too fast! What sets this author apart are her interesting characters and their developing relationships with one another that are all too human. I enjoyed the many plot twists in this book and Barbara Haver's ultimate vindication at the end. This book is clever, proving once again that crimes are too often like a stone creating ripples on a pond--resulting in many unexpected (and often unwelcome) disclosures about people's lives. As usual, Elizabeth George works on numerous levels. Now I just have to wait until the next one...

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Worth the wait, but please, I want the next one sooner!
Review: A wonderful mystery that ranks amongst her best. Not as dark as usual, but maintained the melancholy introspection of the series. I waited so long for this one that I sped-read it, and now I have the long wait for her next. Please hurry Elizabeth George!
