Summary: I would recommend it to everyone
Review: In our reading class we were given choices on books to read, and we chose The Color of Water. We found this book to be interesting especially the way Ruth Mc Bride brought up her children. She felt that an education and a strong faith in God were very important in her children's lives. She was a very sweet lady who never hurt anyone. She was also a very strong person; she didn't let anything get to her even the times when her children were criticized mostly for being biracial.

Summary: This book is about issues on race, religion and identity.
Review: The book is exciting to read, interesting, and I would recommend it, because it's gripping and from the start we see a woman whose fighting against the odds and society. She is determined to leave her Jewish roots for her children and her future. We give her credit for trying her hardest.

Summary: Superficial and frustrating
Review: This book came to me highly recommended and so I settled in for what I expected to be an enjoyable read. Unfortunately, I was disappointed and frustrated by the quality of the writing in this book. I got little sense of the characters and found the prose sloppy and contradictory in places. When glimpses of Ruth came through they were intriguing but for some reason they didn't fit together to create a three dimensional character.

An obvious comparison is Angela's Ashes - it deals with some of the same themes but is far more vivid and engaging.

Summary: A powerful book of strength, courage, and love.
Review: The Color of Water is a very powerful story of a white mother of twelve black children, and no husband to help her through their strugles. For Ruth to be able to deal with her childhood, and raise all of her children, without help from her family would have been the hardest thing for any woman to do! She raised those kids all by herself. The reason why her family won't help her out is because she is dead to the family. The reason this being, is because she married a black man.Ruth did not like the white race, she considered herself a black person in white skin. The author of this book, which is one of Ruth's son's, his name is James. The reason I think he wrote about the last couple of chapters is just to show us how much her family life was kept a secret and how much James wanted to really know about his mothers childhood. Now for those of you who just come on here to read book reviews, and think you won't have to read the book well, you are definately wrong! In order to know whats going on in the book you have to read the whole thing! It's a terrific book, and when you read it you won't be able to put it down!!!

Summary: Spiritually motivating and uplifting
Review: This was an assigned book for our monthly discussion group. I was not sure I would be interested in the book being a white Irish-Catholic woman in middle class New England. What a surprise! Could not put this book down. I feel so humble - this was a powerfully strong woman whose faced down the tragedies of her life and got on with it. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who is facing adversity..it certainly make me stop and think about the trivial things I have to deal with every day. What a wonderful read!

Summary: Powerfully touching yet so simple
Review: The literature could have been more challenging. An easy read with an overbearing theme. However, full of childhood sparks and ironic ploys, it was still an unforgettable tale. It hits the spot of a lite craving for moral.

Summary: A breakdown of the races
Review: The Color of Water by James McBride is the touching story of the life of a white, jewish woman, who is the mother of 12 black children. It tells about the life of Ruth McBride and about the hardships she dealt with during her life. She was abused by her father as a child, her family deserted her after she married a black man. She had to deal with both racism and poverty. She was a very strong hearted woman. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone. It was a very hard book to put down.

Summary: very well written
Review: The color of water was a very insperational book. I think that it inspires many people who have been in Ruths position. I like how James went from his mom's point of view to his point of view of how it was back then. I would recomend this book to everyone that I know because it was just very interesting. I usually can't get into a book but this one just kept my attention the whole time. I never got borred and I actually read the whole thing.

Summary: This book was the best one I have read yet this year!
Review: Hi, I am a 16 year old girl in eleventh grade. I had to read this book in English class. When I first got the assignment I was mad b/c I hate to read. Once I got into the book I absolutely loved it!! I had the hardest time putting the book down so that I could write my homework responses for my english class. My favorite part of the book was when Ruth(james's mother) Decideed that she was gonna learn how to drive again. James and her got in James's father's old car and Ruth tore out of the driveway like a maniac. She was all over the road and was driving way tooo fast! It was kindda funny cause she was laughing and she thought she was having fun, then when she got to the grocery store she slamed on the brakes and went in to get groceries. When she came back out she got in and drove very carefully home and then said that she was never doing it again. I though that it was funny how she just drove like that. I would recomend this book to kids and adults. I thought that this book was a very good way to see how people lived back then and how they struggled w/ the everyday hassles of poverty and racism. this book was very well put together and descibe the things that most of us wonder about.
