Summary: A pretty good ride!
Review:

I'm new to John Sanford, but I read two previous books before starting "Secret Prey." I thought it might be nice to know a little bit of the hero's history. The two books I read were pretty brutal and graphic, but I liked Lucas Davenport.

I read "Secret Prey" in one day...and I enjoyed it. I thought the plot moved right along and I liked the little side trip the author took with the silver-haired opium club.

I look forward to other Lucas Davenport stories...and I like him with the lady cop much better than I liked him with the lady surgeon. The lady cop understands the nature of his work and she doesn't take anything from him that she doesn't give right back, in spades. There's more fire and vinegar in this relationship and I thought it really rang true.

"Secret Prey" is a great summer book.....

Summary: Secret Prey is solid Sandford, but not his best effort.
Review: I've enjoyed all of John Sandford's Lucas Davenport novels. While Silent Prey is true to form, it falls well short of Sandford's best effort. Much of this novel seems forced. Davenport's battle with depression is simply distracting. His not unexpected relationship with a female detective, while entertaining at times, seems to be thrown in for the laugh track. Davenport's fellow detectives, fully fleshed out in the previous "Prey" novels, are not given much to do here ... and that's too bad. Part of the fun in the Davenport stories comes from the other detectives in the squad.

The villain in this story is the highlight of the book. Evil comes in many forms and none so subtle as this one. Sandford's killers are never simple and this one is as complex as any he has created. Frankly, the villain makes the story.

I recommend this book to any Sandford fan. If you have never read one of the "Prey" novels, you may still want to read this one. However, I would suggest picking up "Winter Prey" first.

Summary: I hope the others are better than this
Review: This cannot possibly be the standard fare for an author so popular. Boring, slow, stupid, dull...I will try another one, One other one.

Summary: 9th in Prey Series
Review: In the ninth installment of the Prey series, Lucas Davenport has to sort out a hornet's nest of suspects with motive to determine who killed the board chairman of a local bank.

Sandford does a great job of setting up the reader for the surprise villain. This is a little different than other 'Prey' books, because the bad guys are usually more apparent.

Also in this new 'Prey' book, Lucas' personal life takes a hit in the form of an awkward estrangement from his fiancé. Because I have enjoyed watching Lucas Davenport mature from a womanizing hound to an in-love romantic, this development was hard to take, but I am sure Sandford knows best. He has so far, anyway.

If you have read other books in the 'Prey' series, keep reading. If not, well what are you waiting for? Read them now.

Summary: Another good Prey-novel
Review: Lucas Davenport is called to the scene of what seems like a hunting accident. A wealthy banker has been shot dead during the first minutes of the company's yearly hunting trip. An accident? No. Nobody really believe it was an accident, a lot of people had reasons for killing the man. As Davenport starts digging into the backgrounds and lives of the suspects, he unveils more secrets, and it soon becomes very confusing. He knows he is on to something, but it keeps slipping his mind. He finds himself thrown off track numerous times, for one reason or the other, as well as he has to deal with a new girlfriend and the memories of the old girlfriend, whom he was going to marry. In the end, everything leads him towards the real killer, who does not stop killing only one person. A great Lucas Davenport mystery.

Summary: Worst of the prey series
Review: I will keep this short and sweet. The worst of the prey series. Do not be discouraged when you read this book. I have read every prey novel and they are wonderful, this one just happens to be a bomb.

Summary: You'll never guess who done it!!!
Review: Minnesota banking executive is mysteriously killed during a hunting accident... Just before one of the most extreme mergers of banking history that is bound to make all the right players fat and wealthy as a result. There is money to be made and position to be acquired. One way to make sure to find the cash in-pocket and reserve that spot is to conveniently kill off the competition. But since everyone is guilty and innocent at the same time, who has the motivation to do it? You'll never guess, but you'll enjoy the story even more when you do.

Although I fail to understand how the title of the book became attached to this story, dear reader is forewarned of a thrilling ride. This is a well-planned novel with electric characters. It is certainly well-paced so that its audience finds no dull spots to endure.

Summary: Sandford's Got It!
Review: This one is my favorite so far, but reviewing one book at a time in this series isn't quite right. The entire series is top notch. By page 2, I had a smile on my face and it never went away. The author is a master. The writing is effortless and unpretentious. The reading is involving and realistic. Once again the characters live and the dialog amuses. And once again, Sandford does not create artificial suspense so that he can attempt to surprise you in the end. The events unfold simply and naturally. Like Davenport, I can picture Sandford sitting in the office with his diagrams charting out his next novel. How ever he plots out the story and the characters, it is a huge success!

Summary: Gotcha...
Review: Well fans, if you haven't read them all, I would say that now is the time to go back to the beginning and start. Sanford truly out does himself in this book, you don't want to put it down. It becomes a game of real "whodunnit". I was really able to get my mind in this one and try and solve the case with Davenport, who I'd love to work with or more.
