Rating: Summary: Not a typical Clancy Review: Tom Clancy, without any doubt, is one of the best thriller writers of today. He has given us big juicy thrillers in the past, but I'm sorry, this one's not there. It has all the ingredients of a Clancy novel but in a mechanical sense. Somehow the composition of those ingredients is just not working. Unlike any of his other books, this one totally failed to grip me for a single moment. Starting from the unbelievable scuffle in the airplane to the last page, it was a big boring book. I look forward to the next book by Clancy but not with the same anxiety anymore.
Rating: Summary: The worst threat yet Review: This book is developed around John Clark and his son-in-law Chavez. Clark is head of a SAS type international team to counter terrorist. Book as usual is well written. The ultimate threat, beyond normal reaason and grand in scale. But fully plausable. Though enjoyable and action packed, I miss Jack Ryan.
Rating: Summary: Certainly a page-turner Review: I very much enjoyed reading this book. After reading "Without Remorse", I picked up this book and rarely put it down. I would recommend this book to any reader, especially those who enjoy the action portions of Clancy books more than the political.
Rating: Summary: Clancy's finest work in years! Review: In RAINBOW SIX, we see the return of John Clark as the lead character in a typical heavy, meaningful plot that Clancy has done on a level above any other author for many years. The theme of the book, and the video games that have followed, is a multinational counter-terrorism unit called Rainbow, with John Clark running the show. One reviewer stated that this is the typical "Americans are the best..." plot, but it's really not. Rainbow is formed by members of several countries, including the United States, England, Germany, and Israel. It's not just a United States dominated unit. From the opening pages on, Clancy paints a brilliant picture of life on Earth in a post-9/11 world...and then you realize that this book was written and published in 1998! The ability that Clancy has shown to be ahead of his time in his plots is just another example of his brilliance. This is reflected again in an earlier Clancy novel, DEBT OF HONOR, from 1996, where in the climax we read through a scene frighteningly similar to the events of 9/11/01. RAINBOW SIX, while thick at 740 pages, is really a fast read. Clancy interweaves multiple storylines and more than a handful of characters into an overall story that truly has you thinking about the world around you by the time you finish. With action sequence after action sequence, the book rarely hits a lull and keeps you enthralled to the point that you're disappointed to set it down. One nice part of it all is that the book shows that there are left-wing extremist crazy people out there too...all the insane ones aren't right-wingers as most in the media will lead you to believe. Great books make you think. With that in mind, RAINBOW SIX is a great book by one of the greatest authors of our time. Now...let's get that movie into production.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: This was a top-notch thriller offered by Clancy as it focused more on the "darker side of Jack Ryan," ex-Navy Seal, John Clark. A "black" operation known as Rainbow is formed in response to fighting terrorism throughout the Globe with their headquarters in Europe. Their biggest challenge is to prevent an extremely wealthy maniacal individual, with extremist positions on preserving the environment, from committing one of the biggest terrorist acts in the history of mankind. In my opinion, Popov, former KGB who works closely with this doctor, is one of the most interesting complex characters Clancy has created.
Rating: Summary: Another timely idea, but marred. Review: Yet again Clancy shows his ability to produce a topical and timely treatment of a 'big' issue in the Jack Ryan world. Despite the underlying theme, a number of errors and naive shallow characterizations mar this book. On reflection I've seen the same problems with characters in some of his other work and gotten over it so what went wrong here? Clancy has upped the ante so much in his recent Jack Ryan series that in seems every sequel must now attempt to construct a credible doomsday scenario. By attempting this in Rainbow Six the evil protagonists lack the credibility they need to be menacing. Clancy thinks he must save the world or more importantly, America from dire consequences to provide adequate entertainment for his readers. This time around unfortunately the high stakes game has worn a little thin. How many times can you threaten nuclear, biological or constitutional catastrophe before it becomes dull and before you run out of ideas? In Clancy's case the answer would seem to be "This many.". It's never the high stakes alone which make his plots interesting. There was far less at stake in "Clear and Present Danger" yet that book demonstrated Clancy's ability to tell a great story and tell it at just the right time. This won't be my last Clancy book, normally I enjoy his work. I just hope he rediscovers what he's best at. Not saving the world, but weaving a great plot embroidered with the speculation on new technology which he's famous for.
Rating: Summary: Awsome Book Review: I thought the book was great, Some of the reviews considered the book too discriptive. I personly like the fact that every detail is explained and history given. I learned quite a bit from the book.
Rating: Summary: Great Big Action, Great Big Bores Review: Without Remorse left us with John Kelly turning into CIA legend John Clark. Unfortunatly for Rainbow six, that doesnt leave much for charator development. Besides the good guys it doesnt leave much for bad guys. Although they are anything but typical, think of them as hippies gone wild. Rainbow Six isnt a total let down though. On the contrary, it's anything but that. It's starts off hard and fast, and ends the same way. But you can't help but catch your eyelids falling as you read inbetween the action parts. It's fun to read, but none the less, can't match up to Without Remorse.
Rating: Summary: Had me on the edge of my seat Review: Always like Tom Clancy and couldn't put this one down. Plot took a lot of twists and turns and was very scary. Everybody should read this book.
Rating: Summary: Long, dull, bloated mess Review: This book was surprisingly bad. Clancy's flair for telling an exciting story took a vacation on this one. The basic plot isn't very interesting to begin with and then he fills the book with pages of exposition on the environment and government and I felt like I was at a lecture, not reading a novel. The terrorist plots the group foil along the way to the main story are poorly executed. The team never misses a shot or takes a misstep while the bad guys are like Keystone cops. When you get to the main story, your boredom turns to laughter. It was like Simon Bar Sinister on the old Underdog cartoon and his plots to "ruuullle the world". Clancy has written some classic thrillers. Go re-read one of them.
