Rating: Summary: This book was the best i read so far, I Thought it was great Review: Although I was a bit skeptical of buying the book from a religious affiliated Organization, I was totally pleased at the care and guidance put into this book, with no hint of religion and preaching. I will be purchasing a white german shepherd and wanted to educate my myself again on training, since its been a while that I trained a dog. My present dog is 15 years old and the only thing the book didnt mention was how to make the pup and old dog get along, which i will be contacting the Monks of New Skete for info on that subject. I would recommend this book to everyone looking for guidance on training a new pup
Rating: Summary: ALL TIME FAVORITE DOG BOOK ! Review: I COULD NOT PUT THIS BOOK DOWN. I WAS SO IMPRESSED WITH THE LOVE AND CARING OF THE DOGS FROM THE MINUTE LIFE BEGAN THROUGH THE TRAINING METHODS AND SOCIALIZATION. I HAVE READ MANY BOOKS ON TRAINING AND STILL FEEL THIS IS THE BEST.
Rating: Summary: A "bible" for dog-owners Review: Holistic, humane, common sense approach to creating and sharing a pleasant relationship with your dog. No "flavor of the day" training techniques, just good, solid methods. An absolute must-have for all dog owners. Well-written and an interesting read. Does not delve into specific problem areas too deeply, but suggests guidelines to avoid creating behavior problems, and simple, direct methods for dealing with those that arise. Stresses establishing a basis for a mutually-rewarding human-dog relationship. After reading other, more "technical" or "trendy" training books, I always find myself returning to this book for sound, practical advice. I'd give it a 10 star rating out of a possible 5.
Rating: Summary: A MUST HAVE FOR DOG OWNERS & LOVERS! Review: As a professional dog trainer I have to say the Monks are right on the mark! Their books are a must read for any and every dog owner. I read them when I first started out and learned more than I thought possible from a book. Read it, Learn it and most importantly Use It!
Rating: Summary: This is a great book to read before you get your new puppy Review: This was a great and informational book that helped me learn about raising a new puppy. It gave me tons of information so that when I got my puppy I was prepared. It is also great for when you want to look up a certain behavior or question you just turn to the back of the book. This is a great book that I recommend for anybody to read before you get a new puppy.
Rating: Summary: Should be mandatory reading for all new dog owners Review: Before I got my first dog 3 years ago I read a number of books on the topic (about 10) and I found that the Monks of New Skete books were the best written, most informative and by far the most helpful when it comes to explaining how dogs learn and think, and what their needs are. I was very concerned before asking a dog to come and live with me that I would not be a "good human". (no experince or information) The Monks of New Skete books provided so much useful information that I can honestly say that "Bringing a dog into my life has been nothing short of wonderful". No surprises, except the happy kind.I am sure that if all prospective dog owners were made to read this material before bringing a dog into their lives there would be fewer abused and/or neglected pooches in the shelters. Just think of this reading material as a "marriage and parenthood preparation course" for all would-be dog owners.
Rating: Summary: Buy This book Review: "How to be your Dogs Best Friend" is the best book to own or have when you have a puppy or plan on it. I lend my copy of this book to every person I know whom will be buying a puppy or dog. This book should be owned by all dog owners and breeders. Before I acquired my Golden Retriever bitch, I received this book from another breeder friend of mine, and have absolutely loved it. I recommend EVERY DOG OWNER/BREEDER TO OWN OR READ IT.
Rating: Summary: Excellent, intelligent, dog-wise approach to life with a dog Review: Jack Russell Terriers may seem far removed from the monks' German Shepards, but the relationship-building, canine communication based training they have developed makes work with my pup (8-week old dominant-male JRT) a breeze. I can recommend this book and the New Skete Monks' dog philosophies without reserve.
Rating: Summary: An informative, useful and inspirational approach to dogs Review: The books inspired me to acquire a 7 week old German Shepherd puppy. I was fascinated at the insight and understanding I acquired on the psychological development of dogs.
Rating: Summary: If you have a dog (or plan to get one) - BUY THIS BOOK! Review: Our family raised a German Shepherd Dog Guide Dog puppy. For a year and a half it seemed our life revolved around the dog. This book was recommended to us by the Guide Dog leader and it was the best book I have ever read on dog training, and I have read many. As strange as it sounds, by the time you are half way through this book you feel as if you and your dog actually understand each other. I have been around dogs all my life, but this Shepherd is the best behaved and best trained I have ever had ... Thanks to this book.
