Summary: Flood Tide
Review: My first Clive Cussler book introducing me to Dirk Pitt. I loved it and will buy all the Cussler books I can!

Summary: The Best Keeps Getting Better
Review: As usual, Clive kept me rethinking the plot over and over. What was the goal? It is these twists that turned Dirk's latest vacation into a adventure that has not been seen since the Med. Caper.

Summary: "Not the best Pitt book, but still enjoyable"
Review: Cussler comes up with an interesting scheme involving a Chineseshipping king's illegal immigrant smuggling operation and a plan to foul up the Mississippi River. Some good action, especially with the chase on Orion Lake and the battle between a suped up intelligence gathering ship and a Chinese frigate. As usual, Dirk Pitt is Mr. TCOB, Inc. But I thought the characters could have been handled a little better. I also did not hate the main villian, Qin Shang, like I did many other Cussler villians. Plus, Shang lacked a prevalent cadre of henchmen. There didn't seem a real sense of how evil these guys were. Still, an enjoyable read and a very interesting plan for the Mighty Miss. Again, Mr. Cussler gets an "A" for imagination.

Summary: If you've never heard of Dirk Pitt...start HERE
Review: I consider myself a professional Clive Cussler reader...onlybecause I've read EVERYTHING of his (in print that I'm aware of) and I have corrosponded with him on occasion. Now with that arrogant statement out of the way, I do not pretend to be a close friend, or even a decent acquaintance, however I DO know Dirk, Al, Rudi and Sandecker as well as can be expected, and I can tell the better Pitt stories from the lesser brilliant ones. This is a great 'starter' Pitt story, sort of a beginners Cussler book... but STILL fun. It seems as though we get one good Pitt novel to every GREAT Pitt novel. This isn't 'Raise The Titanic' or 'Cyclops' or even 'Sahara' but it IS an above-average adventure story (as are ALL of Cussler's books). If you are looking to get to know Dirk Pitt, by far THE best character in modern adventure fiction, I suggest you start here, and work up to his newest (and easily one of his best) 'Atantis Found'. Clive is a stud, and so is Pitt. See for yourself.

Summary: Flood Tide doesn't hold to the Dirk Pitt tradition
Review: I've long been a big fan of Clive Cussler's work, but this onejust doesn't cut it as a good story. Most of the other Dirk Pitt adventures were fast-paced and full of surprises. This one was neither. I had to work to finish this book, much as I did when reading the first few hundred pages of War and Peace. It lacks brilliance, and I (correctly) figured out what would happen after reading about halfway through. It's also got some elements that are, to say the least, slightly discriminatory against Asian peoples. What I do like about the book is that it seems Mr. Cussler has finally got his military information straight. I always found it a source of amusement when he described weapons and units that are completely nonexistent. Hopefully, the next adventure will retain these improvements.
