Rating: Summary: An absolutely heartbreaking story. Review: The first time I read "Flowers for Algernon", I needed to find a good book for my 9th grade first quarter book report. When I told my mom that "all the good books" were taken, she told me to find "Flowers for Algernon", and she guaranteed that I would love it. And I did. Since then, every person who has ever asked me for a reccomendation of a good book, I always tell them they need to read this book. The story is so beautifully told, and you really feel Charlie's emotions with him as you get into the story. I also love that it's not a book that makes fun of Charlie as a mentally challenged person, but it shows what it might be like to be mentally challenged.
Anyone who hasn't read this book needs to. It will change your life.
Rating: Summary: Flower's for Algernon-the Best Book Afar Review: This book is one of the best book I ever read in my life. It took me a while to grasp the concept of it but after a few attempts of reading it, I just couldn't take my eyes off it. It shows you how a mentally retarded adult who has an IQ of a kindergardener endures phisical and emotional obstacles of life. After his operation that makes you smarter, he understands what he went through and finds faults in many famous scientist's theories and philosophies. He also began to understand how stupid human nature can be. While on this rugged path of knowledge, he also began to understand love. This book is great for people who think humans are stupid as well as people who just want a great laugh and cry. It is also a great romantic book also. I promise you that this will be a 5 star book for you!
Rating: Summary: the Forgotten Quest Review: This extraordinary book used to be required in better schools for the importance of its sensitivities. Sadly, today it is unlikely to be found on reading lists or in classrooms. Bringing back these "classics" would be an effort to maintain the gentler design of teaching students how their behavior can make a world of difference in a world which requires them to survive. If schools are not offering it, parents should examine it for the values taught for their own budding geniuses, and even for those who aren't.
Rating: Summary: Incredible. Review: This is one of my favorite books. It is not an easy read, although it is exceptionally written. Charlie's voice is so authentic and clear it is heartrending; I am brought to tears or near to it each time I re-read the book, and it can be hard to continue without being overwhelmed by compassion and sadness (and even fear from harm and abuse) for all people who are like Charlie. Because Keyes executes his concept so intelligently, the book is not sentimental - it rings raw and true. It is essential reading for anyone desiring to develop a love for humankind.
Rating: Summary: A beautiful book Review: This is such a beautiful book, full of hope and longing at the same time. The story is upsetting though, for it shows us the stupid side of human nature. Anyone interested in adversity and how human beings overcome it should read this book. There are three "musts" for anyone interested in a great story, such as this: Harper Lee's TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, McCrae's BARK OF THE DOGWOOD, and this book, FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON. Of all of these, FLOWERS is by far my favorite, but the others are good as well.
Rating: Summary: give it 6 stars Review: This story makes you really appriciate things we take for granted like reading and writing. Charlie is a man who is .. mentally slow or retarded and he gets to write progress reports while a hospital does experiments on him to help him learn more. And he does. It really makes you happy because you feel like you are him, never giving up, life is a battle and you have to work at it. I think this is definetly something Charlie learns along the way.
Rating: Summary: not good Review: When I first heard on Flowers for Algernon I thought it would be a great book that would make me cry. I was wrong. The book was good at the begging. It really made me feel sorry for the young Charlie. As I kept reading the book I realized that all Charlie thinks about is physical relationships. It would have been fine if just a few pages involved this, but that was what the whole book was about. All in all, not a good book.
Rating: Summary: Read this book!!! Review: With Flowers for Algernon, Daniel Keyes has created a story that has touched the hearts of millions. In this classic novel he tells the story of Charlie, a retarded man who undergoes an experimental proceedure to make him more intelligent. Surprisingly the process works amazingly well. Charlie gradually gets smarter. Eventually he would qualify as one of the most intelligent human beings in history. There is only one problem, the process is flawed. This flaw is emphasized when Algernon, a mouse test subject that has received the same treatment begins to regress. The mouse eventually dies as Charlie peaks and begins to regress himself. Unfortunately the only person smart enough to find out what is wrong is Charlie himself. The race is on for Charlie to find a cure before his regression leaves him once more retarded, or dead. This book is a tender, sad, and brilliant mirror on the light and darkness of the human spirit. There is also the underlying message of 'becareful what you wish for...you may get it.' I cannot recommend this book more highly. You will enjoy watching Charlie realize that being intelligent doesn't mean you don't have problems.
