Rating: Summary: The Story of a Perfect Life? Review: Based on this book John Glenn never got out of line, never got in any serious trouble or caused anyone else to get into trouble, had a perfect wife and family who always supported him 100%, even if it meant his being away from home for long periods of time. He even goes to the extreme of discounting a story about his concern over his height exceeding the max requirement for space travel. I found many parts of this book enjoyable, but left feeling I had only been reading a whitewashed version purified for mass consumption. On slight hint at the "real" John Glenn may be revealed in his writing a letter to NASA in an effort to overturn the decision to have Alan Shepard and Guss Grissom fly in space before him. This book left me with many more questions about the real man. Showing more of his human, occassionally risking and failing side would have added much to my enjoyment. Unfortunately this was missing.
Rating: Summary: Folksy Review Review: History will record John Glenn as a giant of the 20th century; a pioneer mentioned in the same breath with Cortez, Columbus, Lindbergh, and Armstrong. This book is a review of Mr. Glenn's life told through his own recollections. Most of the book is whimsical nostalgia and offers very little in the way of insight into his career as an asrtronaut and senator. He makes it seem as though these incredible achievemnts happened to him as a matter of circumstance -- "there was an astronaut program so I tried out for it, seemed like fun" etc. What the reader must keep in mind is that Mr. Glenn rose to the top of that program and became NASA's choice for the first orbital flight around the Earth by an American. His rise to power in the US Senate and his serious candidacy for the presidency did not "just happen" to him. Mr. Glenn is an ambitious man -- and I mean this in a good way. He has set goals for himself and gone after them. I wish his book would have taken this into account more than it did.
Rating: Summary: Awesome portrait of a space pioneer! Review: I absolutely loved this book! I am a huge space buff and found Glenn's book to be entertaining, thought provoking, and engrossing. This book not only outlines his unsurpassed career as an astronaut, but also his childhood, military career, senator and everything in between. John Glenn should be every kid's role model. He is an intelligent, kind, and driven man that deserves everyone's respect as a human being. This book also chronicles his bid for the office of President and gives the reader an inside look at his private life. A must read for any space buff and anyone looking for a saga of an American hero!
Rating: Summary: A True Hero tells his story Review: I enjoyed this book. It is an easy read, yet tells an inspiring tale. John Glenn's story truly is the story of America from the Depression to World War II to Korea to the Space Race to the Senate and back to the Space Shuttle. He tells it in a straightforward, down-home style; his prose is far from scintillating or exciting-in fact, it can be a bit dull at times, and somehow he never quite "drew" me in to his personality. (Has he deliberately cultivated a bland personality and writing style so as to offend no one, being as he is a politician?) i found his discussion of his Senate career to be the least interesting part of the book; however, he does have some choice comments about a few topics and a few Presidents. But really, overall, it's a pleasure to read about such a courageous, decent, man who succeeded in reaching his wildest dreams through hard work, goals and values. Cheers to John Glenn, a true American Hero!

Rating: Summary: Exciting life! Review: I found the book to be pretty good, and quite intetesting. I don't know why some of the other reviewers said it was dull! I have read MANY autobiographies of the early astronauts and would rate it up there with the best of them. It is facinating to see how the first American in orbit also got a chance to ride in the shuttle almost 40 years later! One part of the book I wish he went into more detail about was his experience of the actual shuttle flight. It seemed the shuttle part of the book was a bit shorter than I would have liked. I still think no book can beat "Carrying the Fire" by Michael Collins though, so I would give this book 4 stars. If you have interest in aviation and space travel, I would recommend this on your bookshelf. ...now if he would just come to Seattle for a book signing....
Rating: Summary: forget some of the other reviews, this is a fine book Review: i had, of course, read about glenn . . . but did not know that much about him . . . now i do, as a result of reading his memoir . . . as a result, my only regret is that i never got a chance to vote for him for president! (i would have)
Rating: Summary: A must read for those who want to know John Glenn Review: I have never related better to a book. John Glenn is one of the most "American" men I have ever seen. This book captures the life of John and lets us know just how important he was to us and we were to him.
Rating: Summary: Interesting, very well written memoir Review: I have read over 50 autobiographies/memoirs in the last several years and I have to say that this is one of the best that I have read, very well researched and organized. Anyone who is interested in the space program will find this book fascinating. On the other hand, the personal life of John Glenn, like his 50+ years marriage to his wife, is a love story (He met his wife in a playpen when they were toddlers). His courage and perseverance certainly contributed to his success. Two more autobiographies that I have read that share the same vision and determination to success are Georg Solti - A Memoir (world reowned conductor) and Salvatore Ferragamo - Shoemaker of dreams (Italian shoe designer). Both of these I considered them very well written and interesting.
