Rating: Summary: Worthy of the Pulitzer Review: What a book!!! That's all I have to say. It made me laugh and cry.

Rating: Summary: Perhaps the BEST western ever written! Review: Hands down this is one of the most enjoyable books I've ever read. This is truly a great book of fiction and as a western they don't get any better. On a 1-5 scale I'd give it a 12.
Rating: Summary: Still magnificent .. after all these years Review: Here are three clues to how you can tell this is a magnificent book. 1. After more than 15 years since it was first published, it is still being reviewed here on Amazon by ordinary folks like me. 2. It won the Pulitzer Prize. But don't let that intimidate you. This is a rip-snortin' great story of the Old West like you have never encountered it before. Nothing artsy-fartsy here. These are real people reacting to real and amazing situations and if you are a child of the USA, you will love the way you connect to it all. 3. At least once, but probably many times, while you are reading you will find yourself having to stop reading for a moment (although you won't want to!) and look up because you need to reconnect with reality. You may be on the Great Plains during a thunderstorm. You may be in a small town in Arkasas. You may be at Clara's farm on a picnic. You may be playing cards in a bar with a whore. But, she sure knows how to draw a word picture of a sexy man. I can't decide between Joe Morelli and Ranger for Stephanie. McMurtry's amazing writing makes the Old West real for hundreds of pages. You'll never be the same. If this is the first time you have read Lonesome Dove, I envy you. This is a great novel. One of the best American novels of all time. Trust me. A great read. Enjoy yourself. You are privileged to participate in Lonesome Dove.
Rating: Summary: Gus McCrae lives Review: It has been sitting on my bookshelf for over 3 years. Intimidating me with its 1000 page girth. After hearing and reading one positive review after another, I finally mustered up the couraged to crack open the cover and saddle up. Mr. McMurtry develops a cast of characters as diverse as any I've read or could imagine. Call Woodrow the tormented non-communicative leader irrirated me throughout yet I found myself continually hoping he would change his ways. Gus McRae is one to inspire greatness with his positive outlook on life and his lack of fear in any situation whether it be with the ladies, with a bottle of whiskey, in a card game or in a gunfight. These characters and others are developed to a completeness such that no question remains as to how they look, what they desire or what they fear. The combination of these well developed characters mixed with the harsh landscape that plays an ever menacing threat throughout the journey from Texas to Montana sets the scene for a unforgettable story. I'm not sure how much research was put into the accuracy of what a Texas cattle drive, circa late 1800's, was like but McMurtry does a fine job of developing a picture in my mind of what it might have been like - down to the details about the few starving indians, scarce remaining wild buffalo and looming advance of the white man's civilisation. It took me only a few pages to become moderately interested in the story - however after about 300 pages I was unable to put the book down until the wee hours of morning.
Rating: Summary: A Classic American Novel Review: It would be impossible for me to overstate how great this novel is. Like most who've read it, I can't get enough as witnessed by the subsequent sequels and prequels. Mc Murtry has taken this mythic period of American life and both glorified it and de-mythed it. The 2 central characters, Gus and Woodrow live in my mind as if real, and I frequently quote one of them during conversation. The book has romance, gunplay, humor, heartbreak, and adventure. Villans and heroes alike grace the pages with equal depth. One of the few pulitzer winners I've read, and I totally agree with that status of this wonderful book.
Rating: Summary: xxx Review: Lonesome Dove is the one book I've read that I know I can recommend to man or woman, young or old, and everyone loves it. This is McMurtry's's best work ( he also wrote Terms of Endearment and The Last Picture Show, among others) and one of the most enticing stories you'll ever read.
Rating: Summary: what a BOOK !!! Review: Having seen the mini series(Tommy lee jones & robert Duvall)i desperatly wanted to read the book, they say the film's are never as good as the book as i thought the film was outstanding i knew the book should be good,i was wrong,it wasn't good but a piece of litterary genius. It was so well written the images were jumping off of the page more vividly than on screen.Call and Mcrae are as well constructed as characters as any other could be.At nearly a thousand pages the book resembles a house brick and appears a little daunting but once the front cover is opened it is impossible to put down. After reading this book it is an absolute must to purchase The streets of Laredo,Camanche moon and Dead mans walk to see how they met and bonded. My only complaint is that McMurtry made Captain Woodrow F Call a very short man, nothing against short people but Tommy Lee Jones who played him in the film stands at around 6ft2" !!! Enjoy this masterpiece.
Rating: Summary: A marvelous novel Review: Westerns are not books I have ever desired to read. So I approached "Lonesome Dove" with trepidation. But was I mistaken. This book was absolutely wonderful. Even after reading the 843 pages of this novel I wanted more. The book is highly visual, original and full of action. There is even humor included. Author Larry McMurtry examines the relationship between the cowboys of the 19th century-it is a bond we cannot understand today. However, McMurtry does a great job of helping 21st century readers understand these complex relationships. I was late for work more than once because I read this book in the mornings. It is one of only a few books I have read in 28 years that caused such slacking off. If you want to read a sweeping, grand novel then do not hesitate to pick up this book.
Rating: Summary: Read this book. Review: I read somewhere that if you read one western in your life, you should read Lonesome Dove. I am afraid that the statement does not do justice to Lonesome Dove. If you read one BOOK in your life, read Lonesome Dove. The only mistake Larry McMurtry made while writing this book, was making the book end so soon. As a reader you will not want to put this book down. When it does end, you will wish that McMurtry would continue to tell his wonderful story. If you are fortunate enough to read this book, it will soon become one of your alltime favorites.
