Summary: A great book for a kid about survival and leadership
Review: If you want a book with diversity this is the one to choose. A plane crash leaves about 100 boys and no adult stranded on an island. A 12-year-old by the name of ralph is elected leader and together they must combat starvation, dehydration and disease.

Summary: The Lord of the Flies is a great book.
Review: The lLord of the Flies is a great book. It is a book that should be used in every school, because is shows a great struggle for survival on a deserted island with basicly nothing.

Summary: Only so-so
Review: This book is truly disturbing, which can be a plus or a minus. It succeeded in showing how humans can be so cruel and foolish, but do we really need to see innocent boys not even out of grade school being murdered and murdering others? I think not. The story is told brilliantly, and the descriptions of the island are vivid so that it is like you are really there. In truth I doubt that boys this young would resort to such behavior in such a short amount of time; I think it would have much more plausible if the children had been a little older. My only complaints are the violence, especially on children. The book was depressing and disturbing, not one I would recommend, but try it for yourself if you wish.

Summary: More than Evil Jack on the Attack
Review: Golding has made his intentions with this ubiquitous book well known, viz., to show how the ills of society can all be traced backed to defects in human nature. However, in the audio reading of this book performed by the author himself in which Golding gives an intro and running commentary (highly recommended), the author encourages a deconstruction of his literature and champions the validity of each reader's interpretation. Golding himself professes to believe in evil with Jack as its putative embodiment. Instead, I see Jack a sensualist, while Ralph represents democracy, and Piggy stands for wisdom (of course they can be labeled in psychoanalytical terms as id, ego, and super ego respectively).

Each of these three main characters comes to represent a mode of action and a state of mind, any of which exclusively will be insufficient and disastrous, and so must exist and act interdependently with the other forces in the same individual and society. It is too easy to see Jack as evil, forgetting that his motives are instinctual and necessary. Jack hunts to satisfy not only a physical need (all that fruit alone gives them the runs!) but also a spiritual need to explore and assert the will (imperialism?). This is a primitive force, and as Golding shows, when out of hand can result in anarchy and brutality. But the story should not be read as an indictment of Jack alone, for what he represents is an essential and inevitable part of the human psyche and culture; however, Golding's tale demonstrates that its excesses must be controlled by rules (Ralph) and tempered by wisdom (Piggy).

When faced with an overreaching id in Jack, the formalistic democratic process of Ralph is impotent because it has lost its executive powers, namely Jack and his army, thus we witness a military coup and tyranny. Piggy's wisdom does not fit into the ritual of democracy of Ralph and is defeated by the brute force of Jack. Rules are important to the security of a society, but can also be stifling to individual freedom and can become establishment rhetoric. Wisdom without pragmatism is ineffectual and elitist.

I find in Golding's novel and call for checks and balances at the personal and by extension the societal levels. A respect for the multifarious and sometimes contradictory aspects of ourselves and each other will allow for dynamic and sturdy individuals and hence society. Ralph ultimately embodies these several aspects as he understands that rules must be guided by wisdom (Piggy) and sensitivity (Simon) but must also be defended against opposing ideologies (Jack). With this interpretation (admittedly one of an infinity), Golding's novel is not sad or disturbing, but elucidating and hopeful.

Summary: To all you students out there...
Review: I had to read this novel as part of my tenth grade curriculum. After reading the book I hated it. The gruesom details of the evil that is hidden in all of us was absolutely startling to me. I was then assigned to write an essay on Human Nature and I realized that this novel had so many hidden meanings about life, and death that I fell in love with it. Just the fact that so many different emotions were touched by reading this novel made me appreciate the real value of the book. So if you have to read this...take it for more than just words in print. Also a review that points out hidden meanings, and symbolism will help you understand it better.

Summary: Great Novel
Review: I've read this novel 3 times, and each time I notice something new. Golding does an amazing job of digging deep into te souls of all the students trapped on te island. His use of symbolism and forshadowing is uncanny. I definately recommend you read this novel.

Summary: Horrible !
Review: I had to read this book in my English class and it was horrible. It was bloody, depressing, and absolutly vile. I found my self cringe when I thought about reading it. If you have a tough time thinking back on your high school day because people were descriminating to you because of the way you looked or acted, this book will re-open those painfull scars. Nobody should ever recommend this book because it's so depressing and wretched.

Summary: A story of young boys stranded on an island.
Review: In this book, the results of being away from civilization and stranded point to the conclusion that ther is a high capacity of evil and sadism in human beings. The powerful message on the flaws and ironies of society and the human nature and the damage performed on nature make this book definitely worth reading. However, it coudn't fall in my list of most treasured book; because the purpose of this novel wasn't to please the reader but give an insight on the pains and reality of the truth. My personal reaction to this story was pure amazement and a new insight to the tendencies of ourselves.
