Summary: If you like London - you'll love this book.
Review: Having worked in London for many years I found this book intriguing and enjoyable. I learnt more in two weeks of reading it than I did in all my history lessons at school. My husband belongs to one of the Livery Companies so I found it parts of it very relevant.

When will a TV company wise up and ask Edward Rutherfurd to do a Series from his book?

IF YOU VISIT LONDON AFTER READING THE BOOK YOU MAY ENJOY VISITING THE MUSEUM OF LONDON WHERE MUCH OF THE RESEARCH WAS DONE.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Rutherfurd does it again
Review: Having read his previous works, I keenly started on this book, especially as I lived and worked in London for may years. The early settlement, the Romans, Henry VIII, the civil war, the begining of the Bank of England, the start of the Guilds, the original coffee houses that eventuated into Lloyds and the Stock Exchange, the blitz etc. they are all there. The depth of history centered around London is quite staggering. Whilst I do not disagree with other comments that the characters are not so strong as with Sarum, for one who has strong links with London, I found the book enchanting. I often was able to recall many of the places mentioned and could so easily relate to the history whilst enjoying the story telling. Having finished the book, I am eagerly reading my next historical fiction, until Rutherfurd produces another book which I will most certainly read.

Summary: An Epic Journey Through the History of London England
Review: A wonderful story that spans the entire scope of the history of London from prehistoric through current times. If you have ever visited London or have the urge to travel there some day, this is a great introductory book that will set the stage for understanding the manifold complexities of this truely international city. Spun with a series of story teller's yarns, the intricate threads of many generations are woven together to produce a rich historical tapestry. Although a rather long narrative, the reader is constantly motivated by complex plots and quasi-fictional accounts of characters that add flesh and bone to what would otherwise be a dry textbook of facts. A delightful mixture of Jane Auel and James Mitchner styles, with a unique freshness that makes this book a great adventure in historical fiction! Highly recommended.

Summary: Good introduction to English history
Review: I started London almost a year ago, and after skipping a few chapters, put it down in boredom. After picking it up again in a moment on desperation, I realised what I had been missing. This is a wonderful introduction to English history. People have complained that there is no possible way for the characters to have met all these famous people. This is a novel. It has never claimed to be fact. My main problem with this book is that there was too much emphasis on the characters without being much character development. Not including a few Ducket family members, I found that I couldn't develop any relationships with the characters. I also would have preferred more emphasis on the historical aspects of London. This book didn't really give a good impression of what it was like to live during the various time periods, while concentrating more on the plot line. However, the author did a wonderful job incorperating historical figures and events into the story line. I especially liked 'London Bridge' chapter as you could see where Chaucer might have gotten his inspiration for his 'Canterbury Tales.' All in all, this is a wonderful book, and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading historical fiction. I'm wondering if someone can convince Mr. Rutherford to write a 'Paris'!

Summary: Entertaining and educational
Review: A little slow in spots. Many charachters to keep track of. I am amazed at the prdominant role that religion has played in shaping history. the book did a wonderful job of presenting the kinds of issues, attitudes, and struggles that the people of england faced for two centuries.

Summary: Not bad
Review: As an American with no education in British history, this was a good book to get the highlights. But this book was slow going at times and didn't always keep my attention. I got confused about who was who and had to refer to the genealogical chart in the front frequently.

Summary: intriguing history lesson
Review: Having lived in London (as an American) for several years I enjoyed the history lesson. As an avid reader, I enjoyed the novel. As a mother, I enjoyed the almost short story format. I could sit down every night after putting my son to bed and read a chapter. When I put it down at MY bedtime I did not feel that obessessed need to finish the book in it's entirity. I loved the characters but also loved that they moved on from one generation to the next.

Summary: Perfect Summer Reading!
Review: I found this book to be interesting while at the same time informative. This is perfect summer reading because it kept my attention for five weeks of traveling (yes, I was traveling in England and I did go to London) and will most likely keep your attention with it's intricate tale. Also, since it's a long book, it will give you something to read for the whole summer. However, I thought there were a few flaws within the story but, don't let that stop you from reading this book. Just find some time and be prepared to be engulfed in the history of London. PS. If you ever see a copy of London floating in the ocean, that's my copy which went overboard when I went boating. Thus, I'm here to buy a new copy of London.

Summary: Not one of the better historical fictional works
Review: I slogged through "London" while recuperating from a serious illness and couldn't do much but stay in bed. I was interested in the historical links, but, oh, those characters were pretty flat. Not one provoked any feeling. Why do authors believe that longer is better? Take a lesson from Hemingway. Would not recommend it.

Summary: "Maybe It's Because I'm A Londoner".....that I love "London"
Review: As the song goes "Maybe It's Because I'm a Londoner that I think of Her Whereever I go" that Edward Rutherford's book is so dear to me...I borrowed it from the library and now I have to buy it....what a wonderful resource! I lived on Regency Street right of Vauxhall Bridge Road as a child and NEVER knew about the gardens that gave it it's name. It reminded me of when I left London, my grandfather took me to visit the Tower of London just in case I never returned from America...we had lived in Westminster all my life and took London for granted....Edward Rutherford, thank you for a wonderful gift...of my hometown!!!
