Summary: Not Worth the Hype
Review: Dr. Laura Schlessinger has a huge following as a talk-show host. Her audience eagerly awaits her books. But I feel she's a better speaker than a writer.

The book, while it has the supporting anecdotes and vignettes to make her point, doesn't intrigue me. And I wanted to be intrigued; after all, her show can be gripping.

With the loss of word emphasis, tone, accent, and all the other cues we hear on the radio, what the book leaves is a flat transcript feel.

Schlessinger's job as a writer is to bring the emotion back into her subject. I don't feel she succeeded. You can get the same lessons from listening to her show for a week or two, and that won't cost you a penny.

Summary: A very entertaining, as well as informative book.
Review: Dr. Laura Schlessinger is one of the most fascinating and provocative people of our time. Critics accuse her of judging others and having no compassion. This is wrong. Dr. Laura in fact uses her considerable experience and education to sum up the situation (amazingly in seconds) and asks pointed and probing questions to those who call in with "delemmas". The caller uses their own standards of right and wrong to come to their own conclusions. (If we could not discriminate between right and wrong we would all be legally insane). The excerpts from her radio show are the more interesting part of this book, but the commentary enlightens the reader as to why she is approaching the problem from the angle that she is. Overall, this is a very entertaining, as well as informative book. I personally mailed a copy to all my siblings.

Summary: didn't say anything new
Review: Dr. Laura seems to have forgotten been there, done that. She has no tolerance and I construe some of her behaviour as hateful and small minded.

Summary: I admit she's good
Review: Excuseeeee me but she is NOT a therapist, has no degree in any therapy field. But that aside I admit that she has some good points. Her book on the Ten Commandments was interesting I admit.

We need to encourage people to not live lives of lies. To live authentic lives where they accept responsibility for the choices. And I also wish to note that as I update my review of this book (April 2002) I have altered my views about Dr Laura a great deal. And have also gotten back to a more observant lifetsyle even though having family and friends who are gay I cannot agree with some of the things she has said on this issue.

But overall the book is on target and has some valuable information that even we semi liberals can agree with.

Summary: Preaching about values from a Psychoanylist? About time!
Review: Having only heard Dr. Laura's radio show a couple of times I was reluctant to try this book. I thought she treated her callers rather rough. Now I know why. She is trying to use the minimal amount of time she has to help the caller view the situation from a position few think of, that of right and wrong.

This was a fun book to listen to (I had the unabridged book on tape). Yes, fun. The reader started sounding just like Dr. Laura and was most interesting. I had the impression I was listening to Dr. Laura herself dictate the book. Her examples from people who had called or written her were interesting and helped clarify her positions.

Dr. Schlessinger made a powerful plea for using character, consience and courage in our life decisions. I have always believed in good and evil, right and wrong. This book helped me understand why good and right are the best way from what almost seems like a purely practical standpoint. Hearing this subject from the religious pulpit is fine, but it is about time we started hearing about it from other sources as well. Thank you Dr. Laura.

Summary: THIS BOOK IS WORTH MINUS STARS--IT JUST WASN'T AN OPTION
Review: I find this woman's attitude and sharp tongue totally disgusting. Why would anyone listen to anything she has to say when her own character seems to me to be in question. She is sarcastic, cruel, and seems to enjoy demeaning others--not my idea of a role model or someone who's advice I want to take. Save your money. Save your time. By the way, SHE ISN'T A PSYCHOLOGIST! Isn't it obvious that she has no credentials that equip her to be advising others on their behavior and relationships. You have all been duped!

Summary: Legalism at its Best
Review: I have very mixed feelings about Laura Schlessinger. I have devoted my entire life to "knowing" God and certainly agree with many of her positions. However, there is something disturbing about Dr. Laura and her relationship (or lack thereof) with God. She sometimes reminds me of the "Revered Pharisee" with a "cause"--a lot of nice rules that are not tempered with the "grace" or "mercy" or "love" of God. "Preaching" at people about what they are doing wrong and their lack of responsibility has seldom produced any deep change at a soul level for any human being. Coming face to face with true love and compassion has always produced deep and lasting change in people. Look at the life of Mother Theresa. Ten years after Dr. Laura's death, her harsh words will be forgotten. Mother Theresa left an example and legacy of love with her life that will never be forgotten. Dr. Laura sometimes reminds me of Naomi Judd (whom I've met in person at a women's seminar). Naomi is deeply concerned about the issues Dr. Laura is concerned about, but her personality radiates love & warmth and compassion and tolerance & draws people to her instead of building walls. Because of her belief in people, she causes them to believe in themselves. Dr. Laura tends to forget that people are just people, and we're all human. She also tends to be very naive and unrealistic. I watched her the other day on some t.v. show talking about how parents need to plan their jobs around their children, work at home, etc.--whatever it takes to be home with their children. It's very easy for someone in a place of "privilege" to adopt these views. Dr. Laura needs to get out in the real world more. Let her spend a few months working in the "projects" of any city or go into the poverty stricken coal mining areas of West Va. and tell those people they need to work their lives out to stay home with their children. I know that many people shake their heads at her "simplistic" views.

Dr. Laura would actually do very well in Eastern religions with a "Reincarnationist" life view, as "Responsibility" & "Consequences" for one's actions are the main theme.

Having said all of this, I believe that God is working in Dr. Laura's life. She is a person that people listen to, and God is always interested in using people like her to bring his message of "love" to the world. One day, I believe God will give her a "Damascus Road" experience, and she will never be the same. She will stop knowing God's "rules" and will truly know God. It will change her life and everyone who comes in contact with her. I will continue watching and look forward to seeing what becomes of "Dr. Laura."

Summary: Everyone should read this book
Review: I just can't understand why anyone would not give this book 5 stars. No, I don't always agree with her sarcastic and straight-forward style, but she has so many good and moral points that wouldn't hurt any one of us to be aware of. The book has given me much to think about and I'm a better person for reading it. I think that anyone giving this book a negative review is not seeing the overall positive impact it can have on people.

Summary: Tired
Review: I love Dr. Laura, but her retoric is wearing thin. Time for a new format and approach.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Very direct and good advice
Review: I love the way she thinks. More people should read this one. It's direct and to the point about personal responsability. Don't read it unless you really want to know what is messing your life/realationships up. It all comes back to your personal choices.
