This book was about a little indian girl who had to get married when she was 13. Her family was poor and couldn't afford much. She finds out that her family chose a sick boy with mean wicked parents. When she moves out and lives with his family they treat her bad. They make her do all the house work and treat her bad for what she did. She tries to help her husband get better. Later he dies and she becomes a widow. They kick her out on the streets. She was dumped in the city to live by herself and survive. She gets put in a home for widows. There she found a job and got money. She stayed there till she got enough money to move out on her own. Her job was to help deorate wedding halls. She got these stinky flowers and decoraated. Dhe meet a guy named Raji and he helps her out. Then she gets married again and was freed.
I enjoyed this book because this story helped me realize that life is short and you have to work hard and live it right. I liked this book because it shows how different people lived back then. It showed how she had to survived in those types of towns.
This book showed how adventurious she was. I liked this book because everytime I stopped i wanted to read even more.
I enjoyed this book very much because it shows that your family is the most important thing. You need to know that life has many difficulties and she survived. This book showed me that everything is important. I liked this book because the story is very interesting. I think that everyone should read it.
My favorite part of the book is when she started to live in the life of the city. I liked the part when she makes new friends. It was my most favorite part because I felt that she was free and out on her own. My least favorite part of the book is that she gets kicked out and lives by herself. It was my least favorite part because I think that it was unfair of her.

Summary: A fascinating voyage to India
Review: I'm reading this to my kids right now (age 8 and 10).
We are REALLY enjoying this book. It takes you right into her life which is so far from my own children's experiences. I prefer to read books to them that take them to far away times or places, or to made up places altogether. I like the fact that the author uses traditional words (there is a glossary in the back to look them up if you don't know them). This is a great book for kids who like to learn about new ideas, places and ways of life.

Summary: Homeless Bird
Review: Would you enjoy to have your parents choose your husband for you? Would you still enjoy it if you didn't get to see or meet your husband until you said your wedding vows? Well, in India you really don't have a choice!
The book Homeless Bird by Gloria Whelan is about a girl, who lives in India, named Koly, who is having her marrage arranged very soon. Yet, she isn't excited at all. She seems to think that her soon to be Sass, (mother-in-law) and Sassur (father-in-law) are more interested in getting her dowery (the money given to the groom and his family, by the family of the bride, for taking and keeping the bride) than they are in getting her. Then, a few days after her wedding she finds out a terrible secret. A secret that makes her want to run back home to her family. Instead, afraid of disgracing her family by running back home, she sticks it out and has many adventures, not all good, throughout her life. This is a great historical fiction book.
This book is a great, quick read. It was really a page turner because even though sometimes you thought that you knew what was coming next, there was always little twists and turns that keep it exciting and definatley kept you concentrating on the story and nothing else. To me the plot seemed unbelievable altough it really wasn't, because these sort of things that happen in the book, really do happen in real life in India. I think that anyone who likes history but also enjoys a little bit of action would like this book.

Summary: Homeless Bird
Review: Homeless Bird, was an excellent book! It was very interesting. For example, the setting was interesting because I learned about a different culture. The setting of the book is in India, and the girls there get married at a young age. In Koly's life(the main character) she goes through lots of troubles, and happiness at the same time. Another reason you should read this book is,that you never know what's going to happen next. There are so many surprising things in the story. That's why you stay attached.
You can relate this story to your life in so many ways. The book leaves you with a good attiude about not giving up, or miracales happen. Read this book and find out for yourself, how amazing this book can be.
