Rating: Summary: Fascinating read! Review: QUEEN NOOR ROCKS! I wish we had leaders like her in the USA. I really admire the many good works she has done for Jordan, the Middle East, and the world. I was fascinated by her "unexpected" journey as she became queen of Jordan. This book especially changed my perceptions of Arabs and Israelis. American politics and media favor Israel; I was glad to read something that showed the Arab side of Middle East conflicts. Thanks Queen Noor, for sharing your life with us.
Rating: Summary: Noor falls short Review: I was extremely disappointed by this book. Noor's writing is difficult to follow as she skips from subject to subject. The chronology of events is scattered. I was also bogged down by the insistent references to all the "do-gooding" she felt compelled to tell her readers about such as, "I started this committee in Jordan and worked with this international organization, in addition I did such and such"...it was tedious to follow. I was also dismayed at Noor's evasiveness when she tackled tougher subjects such as King Hussein's prior wives. Also dismaying was her account of her first pregnancy and subsequent miscarriage. When she miscarries she decides to "not trouble the King while he is in the midst of business." When Hussein does see her a bit later Hussein's way of dealing with her miscarriage is to take her skiing in the Alps and never once approaches the subject with her. A disappointing account of a woman who used to intrigue me.
Rating: Summary: Accurate, Well-written & I couln't put it down Review: I highly recommend this autobiography, an amazing story about an amazing woman. It's full of wonderful anecdotes & factual historical information. It's written in a fresh, down-to-earth style.
Rating: Summary: A Queen of a Country in Which Jews Can't Own Land Review: Before anyone gets misty eyed over the tender sensibilities of this lady, remember, that during the reign of her late husband through today, Jews are not allowed to own land in Jordan. The legal rights of people are restricted due to their religious beliefs.
Rating: Summary: A Must Read - Heartfelt, Honest, & Inciteful !!! Review: Even as an individual that is deeply interested in world events and world history, I am still surprised that to the present day our American media coverage of events, more specifically Middle Eastern events, becomes tragically misrepresented and changes from fact to fiction. This book, was nothing short of an eye opener. It was amazing to learn of certain world events that have been completely misrepresented and unfairly characterized. This is a must read for anyone wishing to have an 'insiders' view to world events over the past twenty years. This book should also be required reading for all individuals in the educational systems (administrators, students & teachers...) What a breath of fresh air.Peace Be With You, HM Queen Noor & Thank You For Your Gift of Insite.
Rating: Summary: Thoroughly enjoyed "Leap of Faith" Review: I was thrilled when I discovered that Queen Noor was writing her story and I was not disappointed. I found this book very insightful and well written. I have read many books depicting conflicts around the globe and was very interested to learn more of the Palestinian perspective in the highly publicized Arab/Israeli conflict. One does need to remember that this is her memoir and not a textbook and leave it at that. Queen Noor is a strong woman who has greatly altered the rights of women in the Middle East and I'm sure her legacy continues. . .
Rating: Summary: A Leap of Faith, Unexpected Life Review: As a reporter covering the Middle East peace process and a procession of heads of state in Washington during the turbulent years of this book, I want to attest that Noor's (Hussein's) perspective on the roots of the conflict are accurate, insightful and need to be listened to. Her experiences with the American press unfortunately are all too typical of American news reporting that puts its own interpretation on interviews and chance encounters without addressing the substance of situations. In years to come, historians will look at the political accounts in this book and place it on the shelf with the best historical writing of this era.
Rating: Summary: A Great Into to the Recent History of the Mid-East Review: I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It is a history lesson as much as a biography. I found it enlightening to read about the Palestinian side of the Arab-Israeli conflict (the US media and the US government are so biased toward Israel that we almost never receive a balanced perspective). Every conflict has two sides, and this book furthered my understanding regarding the question that has been gnawing at me since September 11, 2001 - "why do they hate us so much?" We've heard general statements about the cumulative effect of decades of myopic US foreign policy, but now the series of historical events that shape the Arab perspective has become much clearer to me. What an eye-opener! Highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: A little too much like a fairy tale Review: An interesting book, no doubt about it ... however, the looong "self-serving" historical sections were more info than was needed in this book ... Also a few too many "flowery" descriptions which did not get down to the "nitty gritty". It appears that Queen Noor (an American by birth) accepted the Mid-East line hook, line and sinker. After a short storybook courtship, she married the much older King when she was in her 20's. Eventually she became assimilated into the Jordanian life and Arab world. An underlying theme in the book seemed to indicate that she was sad that her early life choices left her imprisoned there, so to speak. All in all, an interesting view of the Mid-East...
Rating: Summary: Jordan shows the way to a peaceful Middle East Review: Jordan shows the way to a peaceful Middle East - the Hashemite family of Jordan also used to be Kings of Iraq - and the kind of Islam that they practice there is also totally non-violent, unlike the rage-filled version next door in Saudi Arabia. Read this book (and the one by Robert Baer on Saudi Arabia) and you will see who America's REAL friends in the Middle East ought to be! It is also a fun story to read - the Queen has done many good things in her life. Christopher Catherwood, author of CHRISTIANS, MUSLIMS AND ISLAMIC RAGE (Zondervan, 2003)
