Rating: Summary: Just Go Along for the Ride Review: Tom Robbins' jokey, whimsical style can get on your nerves, but his sensibility is far more complex and insightful than you might be willing to admit. The juxtaposition of Robbins' metatextual commentary and Ms. Mati's persona is often jarring, but both perspectives are entertaining and witty. I love Tom Robbins because he doesn't take his charge so seriously. He loves language and people because they're inconsistent, funny and fallible. I read Frog Pajamas last summer and I still think about the characters....his books are like long, funny koans. Sometimes you just have to shout "mu!" and keep reading.
Rating: Summary: Very disappointing. Review: I read and deeply enjoyed Robbin's first 5 books, so picked this one up with a sense of anticipation. The merciful thing is that I was quickly disappointed and not left lingering for hope. It was readable, barely, and there were some clever plot devices and ideas, but the whole thing didn't hang together, seemed very silly and contrived, and pretty insulting since it was 2nd person and 'you' are apparently a shallow stockbroker who dosen't know herself at all.Read his other books, skip this one. Even if you're a fan.
Rating: Summary: A bombastic, fast-paced, highly creative, and comical novel Review: Robbins takes the reader on an incredibly humorous adventure...pounding out word based comedy with dizzying rapidity and ingenious creativity. His comedic stylings are much like Sedaris and Kennedy Toole...leaving you in fits of laughter and marvelling at his ability to sculpt and string together sentences much like a composer creates music. His humor hits with rapid fire precision and is crafted with tremendous economy...lean and fit with very little excess verbage.
Rating: Summary: Be Amphibious, but don't be a toadpuff Review: YES!! As one of the critics said, "Robbins continues to pour water on a dozing America." This was my third journey, and my sense of adventure will not be satisfied until I take in all of this author's wonderful novels. "Frog Pajamas" was great!! Tom's sense of a female's point of view amazes me. Gwendolyn's hellacious weekend keeps you on your most comfortable ledge. You can't put it down. Never has Robbins been more descriptive, in my readings, about the mood of Seattle, and the western melting pot of the U.S. But the most interesting character would be that of Larry Diamond, obviously Robbins' personal literary philosopher. Your intelligence increases with every page. It's awesome!
Rating: Summary: One of my top ten! Witty and Sexy! Review: Tom Robbins has done it again! This is the second book I have read by him and he is fast becoming one of my favorite contemporary authors! A must read for any Tom Robbins fan!No complaints whatsoever. Anyone who didn't love this book is smoking crack!! FIVE STARS!
Rating: Summary: Hafl Asleep is What TR Was When He Wrote This Review: Either TR is losing some punch or I am not as infatuated with his style as I once was. I found this an enteraining read with some thoughtful moments, but nothing spectacular.
Rating: Summary: FLASH: Self-Satisfied Prose is Boring Review: The prospect of a second person narrative is always exciting... because of the participatory relationship it gives the reader and because it is so difficult to do well. I respect Tom Robins, so I kept reading. And reading. Kept waiting for the reason, the pay off for his utter distain for his main character (And so for me as the second person). I thought: He must be taking me somewhere. But the only place he was taking me was clever-ville. The Gonzo style is 20 years away from being new and fresh... so it is empty and glib when supported only by nods towards interesting ideas and jokes about feces. It was terribly frustrating that Tom's voice could not hold true to the life/mind/senisbilities of the character he was telling me I was inside. Why write a book around a main character you have no interest in? I'm not saying that I need the author to like his readers or his characters (Nabokov doesn't and he's utterly enjoyable). I just saying both groups work better when you give them some respect. And I could have forgiven all if it was funny... Fellow readers, if you're looking for a second person novel to restore you after this this tedium ,try ON A WINTERS NIGHT A TRAVELER by Italo Calvino.
Rating: Summary: This is one of the best books that I have ever read! Review: Tom Robbins has successfully captured the readers attention by creating a book that subverts the curret paradigm. He is WONDERFUL!
Rating: Summary: Men are from Mars, but Tom Robbins is from the stars Review: I just love the way Robbins accuses me of being a greedy stockbroker. He is the only author writing today that could incoporate hallucinagenic mushrooms, tarot cards, stars, and an enema all in one wonderful novel. I am glad, however, that he let me discover some meaning in life, other than capatialism, at the conclusion of the book. Simply amazing. Everyone should read Robbins. . . all of them.
Rating: Summary: ...still a good time. Review: Certainly not as satisfying as Skinny Legs and All (but what is?), this book is still a good time. The ending made me scratch my head, but it's full of wonderful words and strange real-facts about the universe.
