Summary: Terry has done it again!!!!
Review: I was absolutely drawn into Terry's latest novel. I was up into the wee hours of the morning, because I just could not put the book down. The characters are so real and the passion which Ms. McMillan writes her novels is overwhelming. The book was so good, "Dare I say'", this is her best one yet????

Summary: True Insight Into A Black Family
Review: Terry McMillan did an insightful portrayal of black family life. I'm sure most blacks can identify most of the character types in their own or families they know.

I did the audio and it was read by people who added an additional dimension to the feel of the key characters of the book. Terry's development of these characters is what makes the book special.

The big negative of the book is that Terry violates one of the most basic structures of writing a book. This is that the book rises to a climax and then continues on and on. The finish of the book should have come shortly after the climax.

I lost interest and became bored with the book after the climax. This is a pity as the book is wonderfully intriguing up to that point.

Summary: terry mcmillan shines.
Review: though i bought A DAY LATE AND A DOLLAR SHORT a day late and a dollar short, i finished it very early. terry mcmillan writes it like it is -- vulgar. not that i mind it -- because i don't. my first from terry, but not my last.

Summary: Normal is relative
Review: This is solely to respond to Linda Huggins who wants to know if the characters portrayed in A Day Late and A Dollar Short are considered normal. Remember, the word 'normal' is relative because what's common in some families is strange for others. I think what reviewers are trying to say is that we may recognize common traits of the characters through the people we know in real life. That's what they're probably talking about. There are only so many personality traits and Ms. McMillan captures many of them and that's why we can identify with this 'real-to-life' story. Hope that helps.

Summary: Terry is the keeper of my family Secrets!
Review: My mom gave me this book she read it in two days while in the hospital of all thing suffering from and Asthma Attack! she simply said here read this Paris ... when i started the book it was kind of funny i know why she had given it to me to read though i have 5 brother and no sisters there was still a charactor for every one of us in this book. I put the book down and swore not to pick it back up when Viola died by this point to much of my life was exposed ... but this book called my name from under my bed every night and I couldnt rest until i finished. It was a wonderful book. It has help me in some ways to put aside some family differences with Charlotte, I mean my brother, As well I am now the keeper of all my moms old purses (smile) If you have sibblings you will understand why this book was so good. I have passed it along to all my brothers as well as some valued friends with sibblings! Good one Terry keep up the good work.

Summary: Couldn't get into it.
Review: I have some of Terry McMillian's novels and they were really good, but this one, I just couldn't seem to get past chapter 2. I tried and tried, but if I can't get past chapter 2 then I don't see the rest of the book being that great.

Summary: Loved it, but I'm puzzled
Review: I adored this book. It's funny, creative, well-written. But I am so puzzled about the number of reviews that say they identify with it so closely, and that is so like "real" life. I admit I am a middle-class, 50-something, white woman, but I certainly don't consider the characters in this family "normal". The men I know may not be perfect, but they aren't all as dispicable as Terri portrays virtually all of her male characters. Now, the sibling rivalry between the sisters made me giggle - I see this all the time. And the domineering mother - she's a hoot, and I know a number of them. Please, somebody tell me. Am I just naive, or is this really considered normal to others.

Summary: Where is the tissue????
Review: This book was really something else!!!! I don't want to ruin the ending but I loved every member of the family in a different way because you could see someone in your family with a trait of Paris, Janelle, Viola, Cecil.............. Mom knows how to bring everyone home regardless of the situation. This book is Soul Food in a nut shell. You will cry from laughing and also grieving so get a box of tissue and enjoy

Summary: EMOTIONAL
Review: It's been a long time since I have cried this much while reading a book. The characters were repeats of MAMA, but it's been so long since I read MAMA, That I have forgotten the plots. I was so into this book that I wanted to get in and talk to each person and share their lives. I could relate to the quarrels and most of the problems. This book gave me answers to problems in my own family. This was realness at it's best. Thank you Terry for telling the story for so many of us.

Summary: Right On Time
Review: I know that an "abridged" version ommits details, but I don't think I could have taken any more reality. Terry, I have always said that Disappearing Acts(DA) was your best work, and I was sorry that you did it so soon in your career. I thought you would never match it, but this is awesome! Just like in DA, again, you aquaint us so well with the feelings of the characters. And I love the "soul food" type ending. My Dad did that with us when he died. But most of all, thanks for the incest piece. Terry, Black people don't want to admit that incest is being committed in our homes. And God forbid we further admit that we are suffering from it most of our lives. I feel their pain and at the same time rejoice at the fact that you have used you skill to give this a platform. So Terry has done it for me again, my SHERO! Her story and character development is outstanding. I even love her unique discriptive phrases. I can't recall one at this moment, but ya'll will know them when you read/hear them. They are unique to Terry and Awesome!! Thank You Terry and I'll wait patiently for your next masterpiece.
