Summary: BRAVO!
Review: Once again Oprah Winfrey has chosen a book that gives us hope for the future. Bravo to Rubio for a beautifully written story that kept the book in my hands until I finished it in one reading. Icy is a strong southern "young lady" that captures your heart. Don't keep us waiting long for your next masterpiece!

Summary: Ending was disappointing
Review: I couldn't put this book down and was thoroughly enjoying it - right till the very end. I agree with some of the other recent reviewers that the ending was very disappointing and I was definitely left wanting more. The language used by the author was beautiful - really descriptive and perceptive (you feel like you know Icy and you just feel for her). The characters are great - really interesting teacher. Icy was lucky to have so many people who cared for her - which I imagine growing up in the 50s in rural Kentucky and being so different would be quite a feat. Overall a very enjoyable read - but I'd change the ending.

Summary: I Felt Icy Cold
Review: For some reason I could not connect. The story did not seem real to me. Even though I felt sorry for Icy, I had a difficult time with the story. I just finished 'Sing Me A Bawdy Song,' a book that make me cry and made me laugh. It flowed and I really connected with the characters. I did not like the ending of Icy and it made me feel are though reading the book was a waste of time.

Summary: Ran out of time?
Review: I have just finished reading "Icy Sparks." I was very interested in reading this story of a young, almost back of the woods, girl who is ridden with tics. The characters were wonderful, from Icy herself to her friend Rose. You get to see the cruelty of people, both adult and child, when faced with someone who is "different" than they are. Through the novel I found myself wanting to be friends with Icy. To comfort her when she felt alone, to fight for her when she is being picked on and to help show her the goodness in the world that she is unable to see.

Then, I came upon the end of the book. Where summed up in less than 10 pages (and a whole lot of hymns) Icy's whole problems are solved up in a religious revival. It seemed meaningless. Icy suddenly finds her place in the world by finding God in what is shy of a televangelist setting. It almost upset me. Did the author run out of time and decide to sum up the complex problems of this girl in a couple of songs? It left me lost quite frankly. Then....it just ends. We get a brief epilogue of "where is Icy now" but due to the previous pages it all seems rather weak. I can't say that I would recommend this book to someone. Although the book was good through most of the entire thing, the ending left me feeling like it had been a waste of time and with more questions than answers. Due to the severity of Icy's anti-social and problematic behavior...I find it hard to believe that she is suddenly allright with a couple of, "Praise the Lords!"

Summary: Good start, dull middle, contrived ending
Review: I have to agree with the many readers who wrote that the book completely loses steam and then comes to an abrupt and unrealistic ending. The initial descriptions of the oncoming Tourette's, rendered in Icy's voice, are good. Unfortunately, the dialog is not very compelling and after we meet the rest of Icy's world, the book becomes tedious. And the ending makes no sense at all.

Summary: Love it!
Review: Absolutely loved this book! It draws you in to Icy's life and provides the reader with the opportunity to explore the effects of being "different." I plan to use this book as required reading for a university course on diversity.

Summary: Rewrite the Ending Please
Review: Icy entertained with her colorful story of early childhood ups and downs, bad teachers and embarassing moments. She made one taste grandmas' cooking and smell the wonderful mountain flowers and feel the security of a lasting friendship and the heartbreak of losing loved ones but then she tried to take us to church and solve all her problems with singing and prayers which left one asking "what happened "? Will there be a sequel that explains it all? It made me feel that the writer had a great story until the ending then sort of threw the towel in.

Summary: What a disappointment.
Review: This book is what I would describe as a "squirmy" read. It made me very uncomfortable. I had almost no sympathy for the main character. It sort of reminded me of "She's Come Undone". In both books, the main character was so miserable and bitter it was hard to feel bad for her. I think L.A. Law did a much better job portraying Tourette's. I felt bad for that guy.

Summary: The ending was a dissapointment
Review: I loved this book up until the ending. I found it intresting mostly and I couldn't put it down for 3/4 of it. The ending was very Little House on the Prarie.

Summary: A Little Girl's Bravery
Review: This book was such a good read, that I couldn't put it down. The young girl,Icy,is such a smart, yet brave child. She's afflicted with a disorder that noone can understand or cope with. She gets sent to an asylum for children whom are crazy. In the end her disorder, she finds, has a name,Tourette's Syndrome. It makes me wonder how many people have had this disease before it had a name and were labeled as crazy. THIS IS A MUST READ!!!!!
