Summary: One of the best mysteries i have ever read
Review: Ross Macdonald could flat out write. His style is at times very 'Chandleresque', (he really enjoyed Chandler's books)but he brings something else to this story that even the master Raymond Chandler wouldn't have.

The word is 'dimension'. Where Chander and Hammett were known for there 'hardboiled' approach, Macdonald's Lew Archer is obviously a man of keen intelligence. He is also one cool customer, a flawed man in a flawed world.

The story concerns a murder that could be connected to

another murder that happened many years before. And, maybe another. The plot reveals itself slowly, I wasn't quite sure where it was going, but the writing is so crisp and poetic, that i just read, and let it all happen.

This is a wonderful book, written by a man who deserves all the praise in the world for bringing something else to the mystery novel.

Just read it, and enjoy.

Summary: good quick read
Review: The surprise with this novel was not only the ending, it was MacDonald's way with adjectives and description. Without being verbose, he quickly paints vivid images of southern California, the characters peopling his story, and the action. This is not violent nor does it require a score card to keep track of who's on first. A good dective novel; a quick read; it will reel you in and keep your attention.

Summary: Classic noir at its peak.
Review: This is one novel that, although devoid of any real action scenes, comes together in a tightly wrapped package that leaves the reader dangling until the very last few pages. If you are a fan of the classic clue-following, puzzle-piecing detective novel, then this is definitely one to read. I have read five or six of Ross Macdonald's Lew Archer series and this is by far the best. The reverberations after the last scene stay with the reader for a while. If this isn't THE yardstick of the genre, then I don't know what is.

Summary: WOW!!
Review: What a book! What a series of books! I've recently had the pleasure of reading five of the six re-releases of Ross Macdonald's Lew Archer novels, including this masterpiece. As a frequent reader and fan of popular detective fiction and admiring Block, Burke, and Connelly, I was astonished by these books. Macdonald writes gritty literature with superb characters, marvelous plot, and surprising twists that are totally unexpected yet satisfying in their plausibility and simplicity. The Chill is superb detective fiction and recommended with the highest possible praise. I'm already scouring the used bookstores looking for the other books in this series, and hoping the others will also be re-issued
