Summary: This one is a disappointment.
Review: The idea of a 17 year old having the presence of mind depicted in this story is difficult to believe. This young man had virtually none of the adversity growing up as other central Francis characters. I can't argue that he isn't smart; I just feel the character is not believable. The plot is all right, but the end can be predicted by the middle of the book. It had little of the suspense of other Francis books, such as Banker. I found myself not picking up the book at every chance, a major departure from reading other Francis books. Dick Francis is a great, great writer who has given millions of people many hours of reading pleasure. While entertaining, this one just wasn't up to his standards. I sincerely hope the next one rekindles his old fire.

Summary: Interesting but lacks credibility
Review: The plot is interesting and educational to those of us who know little about British politics and less about horse racing. However the assassination attempts, especially the shoot-and-stumble, are less than credible and the final resolution is totally unbelieveable.

Summary: Not One Of His Best
Review: The story is a good one until the halfway point and then seems to wander aimlessly. Still, worth reading if only for the likable characters and the message of morality.

Summary: Decent Book
Review: This book was an easy read with about 270 pgs. I had to read it for a school project and I thought it was the best school book I have ever read. If you like horses and political life this &%$# is for you!!!

Summary: 10 pound snooze
Review: This book was dissappointing. There was very little mystery, and no thrill. The best part was the attempted sabotage of the automobile, but even that was not followed up well. I found it hard to believe that Julliard's rise in British politics went so fast. Dick Francis has a great reputation. Surely his other work is better.

Summary: A bit of a change....
Review: This novel is tangentially about horses, and it is a mystery, but I think it is also an attempt by Francis to try something a little bit different. It is a coming-of-age novel, with a promising by very young hero, and it also has some elements of the long tradition of the British comedy of manners.

While it will nver be in my top ten percent of Francis' novels, it has a sunniness and good cheer that makes it a good light read.

Summary: A very good read
Review: This time Mr Francis mixes in politics with horses, anddevelops characters you care for, all this without four-letter wordsand steamy sex, pretty unique in this day. Well worth the time and money, I can only hope Dick Francis writes many more.
