Rating: Summary: what a sad approach to exercise (and to your own body) Review: I have to admit, I read only a couple of lines in a book store and that was quite enough. About the question of excercise the advice was basicall: "Dont do it, when something bad happens you will blame yourself for the rest of your life and you won't look good in a tight sports outfit anyway. Just enjoy the time you don't have to excercise." So, I conclude from that: Women excercise only to LOOK good in and out the gym? What about excercising for FEELING good, energetic not to talk about that it might be healthy? We do everything just for the looks? What a sad statement the author made about herself with just these few lines. I can't say anything about the rest of the book, but I hope it has more sense.
Rating: Summary: Girlfriends' Guide gets 4 pacifiers from BabyLounge.com Review: This hysterical book gives an original perspective to pregnancy and is an enjoyable read. The Girlfriend's guide is a great book to read when you want to feel better about yourself. According to the author it's ok to: spend a lot of money on attractive maternity clothes, not exercise, gain a lot of weight, not have sex, sleep all day, and act insane. The information in this book is presented in a humorous way and you will undoubtedly find yourself laughing out loud on more than one occasion. My favorite part about this book is that the girlfriend's tell you like it is. There is no sugar coating the truth about the hard-core facts that most women don't want to hear (e.g., you might get hemorrhoids, by the end of your pregnancy you will look like a beached whale, and sex will probably hurt for a long time after you deliver). If you want to have a resource guide that includes more medical information, you'll probably need another pregnancy book. However, when you're in the mood for a good laugh and a sense of sister-hood then you'll be glad you have "The Girlfriends' Guide" to turn to.
Rating: Summary: be prepared to laugh at yourself Review: Vicki Iovine may not enjoy being pregnant but she certainly knows how to laugh at herself when she is. I enjoyed this book because I, too, can laugh at myself. Some of her descriptions of pregnant women and the things they do were painfully truthful-when thinking back to those days, I have to admit I probably did them too! Vicki gives some insights on what to expect and what you'll feel like. I found them to be helpful. Overall, I enjoyed the Girlfriends' Guide and found it to be a pleasant relief from some of the more stick-to-the-facts, medical terms-only pregnancy books. If you like Girlfriends' Guide, you should also read We're Pregnant! which describes an entire pregnancy and delivery from the eyes of both parents-to-be. The father's comments are really funny.
Rating: Summary: Not only funny, but helpful too Review: I just loved this book. It gave me an honestly and hilarious look into what pregnancy was going to be like. I highly recommend this book, especially for first-time moms. My husband even read and loved this book!
Rating: Summary: A Must Read! Review: I love this book! It's the first pregnancy book I bought, and it's one of the best. OK, so I am not a size four pre-preg, nor am I married to a record producer (although I'm sure my husband would love to be one!). However, I feel that Vicki is another girlfriend of mine! She tells it the way she sees/saw it, with lots of good information and a healthy dose of humor. I have recommended this book to all of my girlfriends the minute they told me they were pregnant. I've found it very reassuring to know that I'm not the only woman who's ever gone through this and to find out how Vicki and her girlfriends have coped. This book is a must read - and if your husband will read it too, so much the better!
Rating: Summary: An witty and humorous approach to the wonders of pregnancy. Review: The Girlfriends guide was a refreshing approach to pregnancy that put a new spin on the facts. The Guide eased my mind and even made me laugh about some of the unexpected repercusions of a pregnancy.
Rating: Summary: Wish I hadn't bought it Review: The author is totally self-centered and vain. She seems to be more concerned with looking good than taking good care of herself (and her baby). Don't go to the gym because you don't look good in your outfit?! Give me a break. Not everyone of us is a size 4 and wears tights and leotards. I feel sorry for her because her values seem way out of whack. All her girlfriends seem equally selfish. One gal wouldn't take pain medication because her husband was promising jewelry!? What a materialistic, brainless twit. Save your money.
Rating: Summary: WARNING: THIS BOOK IS FUNNY Review: This very refreshing book includes funny stories about pregnancy and really does explain some things your MD won't tell you. Ms Iovine is not a doctor, so don't go looking for medical advice and then be all offended that it's not comprehensive. There are plenty of other books written by doctors and nurses that can give you the skinny (pun intended) about pregnancy and long lists of things to worry about. ("What to Expect When You're Expecting" actually has a chapter entitled: WHEN Something Goes Wrong. How cheery!) If you think pregnancy is only a time for worry and tests you won't apprectiate the gift this book can be. Buy it and enjoy it for what it is--what pregnant woman couldn't use a laugh?
Rating: Summary: Humorous look at something most woman go through, however... Review: ...most women aren't a size 4 nor do they have friends with cutesy names like Corki. Also, if you have any issues with your weight (and what normal sized (size 10 and up) woman doesn't? Thank you, Cosmo :P) you may be offended when the author rambles on about how she got so FAT at a size 10! If you can get past that, though, the book is helpful and does tell you things you probably won't hear from your doctor unless you know to ask ;)
Rating: Summary: Down-to-earth, and FUNNY! Review: This book is a comfort to any pregnant woman. As a first time mom, I have read many medical and serious books about pregnancy, but this is by far my favorite. The author speaks to you honestly and humorously. She gives you the feeling that "yes, everybody goes through that."
