Summary: Not Age Appropriate
Review: After my daughter experienced a few nightmares, I read this book myself to see what all the fuss was about. Within the book a miner 'blows his brains out' and among other things a crude amputation is performed 'in detail' after which the child is left by his relatives to die in their mad rush for wealth.
This is not my idea of an appropriate book for an 11 year old. To me there is no glory, only an immense waste of human life in this book. It is depressing and moreover I was angered that the public school system chose to present it as part of the ciriculum without some sort of warning to parents and students about violent content.
I'm not sure what everyone believes appropriate anymore, however if you made a movie with the same detail as this book I can guarantee that the rating would be R and no child would be watching it.

Summary: Jason's Gold
Review: I read this book as a preview for my son and was thoroughly entertained by the story. The story is fast paced and very vivid about a young man and his adventures enroute to the Alaska frontier. You could almost see and feel what Jason was experiencing as he travelled. When I convinced my 14 year old to read it, he did not put it down until he had finished the last page!! I would recommend this story to any age and sex reader. It was a wonderful story.

Summary: Okay Book
Review: i read this book to my boys (9 and 11) and we all enjoyed it. A quick read with lots of adventure. a good historical fiction that was fun to read and taught about the klondike gold rush! we are going to alaska this summer and now my boys know some history about skagway and the yukon. I'd say prior to this book my boys had a very "romantic" view about the gold rush. Now they know the extreme hardships that people endured. I highly recommend this book if you are travelling to alaska with your children. I also recommend this book to any middle schooler or 4+ grade student who likes adventure. I'd bet both boys and girls would love it, but because the main character is a boy it's sure to be a hit with the boys!

Summary: Jason's Gold
Review: Jason Hawthorn, after hearing the news about the Klondike gold mine, hurries home to tell his brothers that he was going to Alaska. When Jason arrives home, he finds out that his brothers had already left for Alaska. They had also taken the money that his father had left for Jason when he died to by their own food and supplies for the trip. This left Jason with absolutely nothing. He decides to go to Alaska anyways to catch up with his brothers. Since he was not carrying much, he would be able to move quickly.

I really enjoyed this book because it has a little bit of everything. There is action, just a bit romance, and tragedy. It was pretty hard for me to put down this book. There was a lot of suspence, which made me sad whenever I had to put this book down to eat or use the restroom. This event actually happened, so while you are enjoying this book, you are actually also taking in information. It shows a lot of what happened and how people felt when they had accomplished their goal by reaching Alaska or how they felt when they had failed to reach Alaska. Many people died since it was so cold up in the up there in the mountains. A lot of animals also died, such as dogs and horses. Many people that bought them had no idea what they ate or how to care for them.

My favorite part of this book was when a little boy had got his legs frozen. While he was walking to Alaska, he had gotten water in his boots and had forgotten to take them off the dry them. The only thing that he could have done was cut his leg off. The little boy's uncle leaves him there with Jason because he thought he would die. The uncle also didnt have any time to wait for the little boy's legs to heal, so he just left. He had lost a lot of blood when they cut off his leg, and his uncle gave up hope for him surviving. If he did survive, Jason would not have enough food to last him the whole winter. How in the world was he supposed to feed the little boy now?

Summary: book review
Review: Jason's Gold, written by Will Hobs, is an exciting book. It takes place in the snowy mountains of Alaska in 1897. One of the main characters, Jason, fifteen, is seeking to find his brothers, while Charlie, twelve, has his leg amputated because of frostbite from the cold weather. It was all because his dad made him come look for gold.

The story is mainly about Jason and Charlie who are out to seek gold in the Klondike. During their adventure, they find a lot of danger. If you're a reader who loves an escapade, I would recommend this story to you. Although it has many sorrowful sections in it, it's a great book to read because of the main plot in the olden times. In the end you'll be wishing Will Hobs made a sequel.

Summary: Klondike Or Bust
Review: Jason, a 15 year old boy, lives alone in New York working as a paper boy. Once he finds out about the Klondike Goldrush he is determined to get there and stake his claim. When he arrives in Seattle to find his brothers there, he finds out that they have allready left to got to the Klondike and they took his $500 that his father had inherited to him...The ending is great and the book is full of excitement. The first few chapters are a little slow, but the book is worth continuing. Will Hobbs did a fine job on expressing the characters feelings and showing the reality of the Klondike Goldrush. I liked this book because it related well to young readers. Jason's Gold was a good book and it will be worth the time to read.

Summary: Against All Odds
Review: The book, Jason's Gold, written by Will Hobbs, conveys themes of determination, disappointment, and hardship. These themes led to a well-written, page turning thriller that makes you feel lucky for all that you have.
Fifteen-year-old Jason Hawthorn hears news of a gold rush, taking place in the Klondike. Jason leaves his job as a newspaper boy, and is immediately infected with klondicitis as it comes to be called, or Klondike fever. Jason wishes to return home to Seattle, and rejoin his two older brothers, Abe and Ethan, and then set out for gold!
Along the way, Jason runs into many problems, such as food shortages, transportation, bone-chilling cold, and fierce competition with other people infected with Klondike fever. To survive the elements along the way, Jason has to use all of his skills, and comes blisteringly close to death. Just making it to Dawson city, where the gold has been found, will be a challenge. Jason will have to battle infamous trails such as the Dead Horse Trail, and the Chilkoot Pass. This is not including a 500-mile trip down the Yukon River that must also be completed, and completed before the harsh winter sets in, and the river freezes up.
Jason's Gold is a book for anyone who enjoys suspense and action, with sudden turns along the way. Jason shows amazing courage and a will to survive that fuel him along his journey. This story is based on the ancient Greek myth, Jason and the Argonauts, which tells of Jason braving impossible odds to retrieve the Golden Fleece. Will Jason Hawthorn retrieve his golden fleece, or will he fall the at the hands of the merciless Klondike?

Review: This book is appropriate for young adults. It is well written, and has a good story line. However, besides that the book is nothing special. There really isnt too much excitement and it doesnt leave a lasting affect on the reader. Thats why I give it 3 out of 5 stars.

Summary: Jason's Gold
Review: This book was great! I didn't want to put it down. Jason's adventure really shows how hard it was to travel to Alaska. It also shows how many people didn't get rich and how much they suffered. Some even died. He meets many famous people along the way. He works hard and smart. I wish I could have this adventure. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know what it was like in the Klondike.
