Rating: Summary: Once Upon A Time... Review: This is truly a wonferful piece of work. As a children's author and illustrator myself, I can understand and appreciate the marriage and pacing of words with images---both needing to hold a magic, all its own---and yet, as they flow together...they flood our souls with an abundance of imagination, unique and everlasting. "Joseph Had a Little Overcoat" is one such special moment. Thank you Simms Taback, for capturing this sparkle for us.
Rating: Summary: Every Generation Has Its Classic Children's Book Review: You know the ones I'm talking about. The Cat in the Hat. Goodnight Moon. The Giving Tree. Where the Wild Things Are. Joseph Had a Little Overcoat is in that league-- and this edition is immensely superior to the one that Mr. Taback produced back in the Seventies. Sometimes it's hard to predict the books your children will love. As much as you love your kids, you can never completely know their minds. While I hoped that they'd like this book, I was amazed at the intensity of their affection for it. All four of them-- ranging in ages from three to eight-- have wanted to read nothing else since I bought it. The writing here is very spare. Don't expect the mad versifying of Sendak or Seuss. But if you're looking for a book with the ineffable charm of a classic, give this one a try. Your kids will thank you.
