Rating: Summary: Publishers Weakly Review: Standard expectations are met. Publishers Weekly apparently has staffers that need their diadies changed and a little nappy time. WAAAAHHH!
Rating: Summary: Minor Speed Bumps Can't Stop This Thriller! Review: After reading the Publishers Weekly review I was uncertain about diving into a book of over 600 pages. Nevertheless, the sharp-looking cover and intriguing liner notes sucked me into the story...and, boy, am I glad!Despite a few minor speed bumps, "Mission Compromised" is a fast-paced military thriller. We follow the mission of a Marine, Peter Newman, as he coordinates secretive, UN-appointed teams for quick response in global hotspots. He is particularly motivated to see one team become successful in its assignment to assassinate Aidid, the man responsible for the Mogadishu disaster as documented in "Black Hawk Down." Newman's brother was a victim of the massacre, and Newman wants revenge. He also wants to repair his failing marriage, but has few tools to do so. As the story progresses, other factors--Russian, Iraqi, and American--come into focus and threaten Newman's teams, not to mention his very existence. "Mission Compromised" is a solid thriller. The scope of the characters and plot never equals the scope of a Tom Clancy novel, but the global ramifications of the story do. To call the plot 'convoluted' is to claim amateur status as a reader of espionage novels. With Joe Musser's co-writing, North communicates clearly and effectively, though never oversimplifying the entanglements of any government operation. North's intimate knowledge of his subject matter adds to the breathlessness of the book, particularly in the last third. Sure, the ponderous military parlance might seem overwhelming, but it also underlines the veracity of the story as a whole. As for speed bumps? Sections of the story do become evangelistic, but they are tame and far from overwhelming. Characters are believable, but never deeply studied. In fact, the book reads most often with the dispassionate delivery of a nonfiction account; when it does dip into emotionalism, it does so subtly--and managed to catch me off-guard on two separate occasions. My main question upon completing the last page: Where does fiction end and reality begin? Scary stuff. Maybe I'd be safer not knowing.
Rating: Summary: Para-Military or Religious Fevor Review: This is an excellent para-militray/political story set within the Middle East and our "War on terrorism" that began in the "cold war". It is exciting and contains multiple conspiracies that involve the White House, United Nations, and special ops military to include Marine Force Recon, Army Delta and the British SAS. It does contain a few distractions that keep this from being a 5 star. First, the constant & long-winded discussions about one of the characters specific religious faith that permeates the book. It was excessive, and appears to be part of a personal agenda of the authors. The second distraction is some of the operational tactics are not correct. Specifically, Army Delta & SAS teams plan their own missions. In the book, the author treats them like he was leading a platoon of regular infantry, not experienced operators. Overall a good novel.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Read Review: After listening to a local radio interview with Ollie, I had to have this book! The only thing I did not like, was the amount of abbreviations. But then, if it were not for those, the book would have been 800 pages instead of 700. :) All in all, a great read if you are interested in "behind the scenes" things that we as citizens aren't supposed to know about...
Rating: Summary: Ollie North hits a homerun! Review: Ollie North hits a homerun! The first-time novelist, North, grabs hold of the reader from page one and doesn't let go until the end. This novel has it all...intrigue, suspence, danger, action...the makings of a HIT novel followed by a HIT movie! Col. North shows all, that he is indeed, a wonderful story teller. This ability, I am sure, comes from his "life experiences". It is wonderful how he was able to write a suspence novel which tells a story with an underlying message within...the message of everlasting life through Christ Jesus, attesting to Col. North's own personal relationship with our Saviour. Congratulations, Col. North! Don't hesitate, buy this book NOW!!!
Rating: Summary: This is what happens when writers don't read . . . Review: I am a huge fan of the spy genre and was unsure how a "fictional" work by North would be written. Laying aside the utter ridiculousness of the plot and characters, we simply did not need a book to tell us what a victim the author(and I use that term lightly)is. Politics have nothing to do with what North did and was bagged for - if the same events transpired under Clinton, you can be sure that the Right would be all over the guy forever. Enough is enough Fox News. Your "newsmen" are hardly literate to begin with. When they enter the print world, it becomes even more apparent.
Rating: Summary: Fiction or roman a clef? Review: This book was an incredibly good read, as good as any Clancy, Ludlum or Follett. The story rang so incredibly true, especially in light of Col. North's treatment by the bureaucrats and the media in the Iran-Contra hearings, that it begs the question- how much of the story is fact based? Despite the usual disclaimer in the fore of the book claiming this is a work of fiction and any resemblance to any real person...etc., the hairs on the back of my neck were at full attention as this very plausible story unfolded and it seemed all to likely given the individuals entrusted with running our country during the last administration. I swear I am not a conspiracy theorist( I think Oswald did it alone, Sirhan too), but by all means, read this book.
Rating: Summary: Read the New York Times review of this great book!! Review: I read Clancy, Ludlum, Follet and the rest. This was a great book that ranks right up there with the best of the genre. It held my interest right to the end of a 600+ page thriller. It opens at a fast pace and keeps you hooked all the way through. Some North East liberal media reviewers just can't get past Ollie's politics and admit that this is a great read. As for me, I can't wait for number two!!
Rating: Summary: Tom Clancy Has NOTHING to FEAR!!!!!!!! Review: Oliver North can not WRITE! This book is boring and a pathetic attempt to cash in. I was hoping it would be exciting. If you like thrilling books do not read this one. The plot is downright stupid and the characters have no soul...no life to them. This book is a MAJOR "literary" DISASTER!
Rating: Summary: Mission Compromised Review: This is the working title for the first of three novels by Oliver North. Based on North's actual life experiences, Mission Compromised will introduce a unique premise in which Major Peter J. Newman, U.S. Marines, is assigned to fill the actual top-secret White House National Security Council staff position North once held. The plot contains intrigue, politics, international espionage and anti-terrorism.
