Rating: Summary: Excellent tape Review: By far Belleruth's tapes are the best in applying guided imagery to health and healing. Her tapes inspire as they help you focus your mind on healing your body. Highly recommended!
Rating: Summary: Relaxation before brain surgery. Review: I bought this for my father before his brain tumor was removed. He is not the sort to listen to stuff like this but absolutely loved it. He was (rightly so) extremely anxious about his surgery. This really helped to calm him down. He would lay on the sofa and we'd put the tape in. We'd even flip it over for him. I never listened to the tape but overall I'd say it did help him deal with anxiety before and recover after the surgery. He is fine and happy today!
Rating: Summary: Important Clinical Trial -- "Remarkable Effects" Review: I have not listened to this tape (I gave it a five rating becuase I couldn't leave it blank), but I came across a reference to it in the "Sounds of Healing" by Mitchell L. Gaynor, M.D. that I thought might be useful to anyone considering buying it. On pages 85-87 it says, "One recent clinical trial demonstrated he remarkable effects of a guided imagery audiotape with lush musical accompanimnet for patients before and after surgery. Guided imagery pioneer and phychotherapist Belleruth Naparstek developed an imagery tape for surgical patients....The study was conducted by anesthesiologist Henry Bennett, M.D., a pioneer in the field of mind-body interventions for surgery. Bennett randomly assigned 335 surgical paitents to one of five groups....Each of the four treatment groups listened to very different tapes: (1) Bennett's own instructions on imagining positive surgical outcomes; (2) simple relaxation followed by soothing music; (3) a "hemi-sync" relaxation tape that delivered different tones into each ear at different frequencies, designed to slow brain waves and induce relaxation; and (4) Naperstek's elaborate imagery-and-music tape. "Bennett was particularly intererested in surgical outcomes, and when he tallied the data he was surprised by the results. Naparstek's tape was the one one that proved to have significant value in promoting the healing process after surgery. At statistically significant levels, patients who listened to her tapes lost less blood (i.e., only 200 cubic centimeters compared with 350 cubic centimeters in teh control group); they also stayed in the hospital, on average, one full day less than those in the control group. ....Naparstek gives much credit to the emotional and sensory effects of the accompanying music. But she also cites the traspersonal power of her sounds and images. 'What works best is taking people beyond ordinary time into a different state of consciousness, preferably where they drop into their hearts," she explained. 'The tape is putting them in a place of love and power where they feel safe.'" I haven't undergone surgery, but if I do I would try this.
Rating: Summary: Surgery Guided Visualilzations Review: I have owned this tape for 5 years. To date this is the best tape--bar none for accessing your inner healer. Many tapes are on the market but I have found none to compare to the quality of this product. Anyone contemplating a surgical experience should ensure they maximize their healing outcomes! This tape will help you feel safe, nurtured and in competent hands throughout your experience. It is on a cosmic but practical plane of reference. Nothing for you to lose and all for you to gain.....best wishes
Rating: Summary: Couldn't Use it -- was disappointed Review: I'm a day out from surgery and ordered this tape (and another) to help with anxiety and to hear after surgery. I hoped for a tape I could listen to before I go and while in the hospital. There are two tapes -- one just has new age music on it, which I could get anywhere. The other tape has 20 minutes on each side. On the first side, she gives boring instructions for 10 minutes, then does 10 minutes of guided imagery. On the other side, she has 10 minutes of affirmations, then it just stops. So for a person, who's feeling helpless in the hospital -- it doesn't work. You don't want to hear her same instructions over and over again. The 10 minutes of imagery is good enough, and so are the affirmations when you turn it over. But it stops after 10 minutes, then there's blank tape for another 10 minutes. I thought it was a total waste of money.
Rating: Summary: Worked for me! Review: This guided imagery tape was a Godsend in helping me to prepare for retina surgery - for the second time in six months. I was most anxious the first time and wanted to be more relaxed for the second, more complicated procedure. So, I bought three tapes by different authors, and found that the guided imagery/affirmations on this tape were just right for me. I listened to the tape 8 or 10 times before the surgery. Two sentences were especially helpful - particularly when they came to mind as I walked into the operating room. The first described what I saw - "a team of caring, competent professionals, busily getting ready for my surgery". The second sentence described what I felt- the support of friends, family, and "magical allies" who, according to the tape, were with me in the Operating Room. With this thought in mind, and a smile on my face, I went under. My post-op experience was similar to that described in integrative medicine journals about using guided imagery to prepare for surgery: I recovered more easily than before, felt little or no pain in my eye, and have done well since. I highly recommend this tape and I wish you well.
Rating: Summary: SAVED MY LIFE!!! Review: This was the first guided imagery tape of Belleruth Naparstek's that I ever used. I have since become a total Belleruth-o-phile. I was a terrified surgery candidate. I went from being a basket case to serene and ready. It was a miracle!! I love her voice, the images, the music and the way she uses words. A lot of care and reassurance comes through on her voice. And it's a very grounded experience. Non of that airy-fairy stuff that's out in the ozone!! Excellent. Can't say enough. Saved me from terror!!!
