Rating: Summary: Love it alot! Review: I have to admit that I let "In Her Shoes" sit on my bookshelf for a while, before I got around to reading it. After just finishing it up, I so sorry that I let this happen! "In Her Shoes" is a great book that tells the story about the relationship between sister that are totally different. Readers of Ms. Weiner first book will be happy to know that we get to see what Cannie has been up too. This is a really great book that should not be missed.
Rating: Summary: dry and predictable literature Review: Ms. Weiner is an excellent writer. That's why it's a shame that she wasted her talent by writing this ultra-conservative, mediocre novel that reads more like a screenplay for a made-for-tv movie rather than a thoughtful, original book (actually, I could very easily see this book becoming just that, and maybe that's what the author was aiming for). The main characters are poorly developed, stereotypical and one-dimensional, and the book does not succeed in engaging the reader. You don't wind up caring much about what happens to the characters by the end of the novel, and you can easily guess the ending before reading too far. And what's up with the way that the author handles the protagonist Maggie? From the first scene to the last, Ms. Weiner seems more interested in humiliating her than anything else. I'm really surprised that the editorial reviews for this lackluster book were so positive. If you are curious to read it, at least wait for the paperbook version to be released, or, better yet, borrow it from a friend.
Rating: Summary: Still Hilarious... Review: Jennifer Weiner has done it again. Although this one is not as good as Good in Bed it is still a wonderful laugh out loud book that makes you feel wonderful at the end. It is especially good for people who have sisters, or have a Bipolar person in their life. As someone who has both of those this book hit home, and I loved it very much.
Rating: Summary: Jennifer Weiner for president! Review: This author is amazing! She has a way of making you feel as though you are in her book standing right next to her characters as they go through the journey of life. I was especially happy to see Joy and Nifkin and Cannie make brief appearances:) I love the sisterly banter between Maggie and Rose as well as the love that they have for each other that only seems to come out when times are rough:) It is a great book and I definitely recommend it to anyone who loved Jennifer Weiner's first one!
Rating: Summary: A fantastic, funny read! Review: "In Her Shoes" is a wonderful, funny and charming book. I loved Weiner's first book, "Good in Bed" and was worried that the second book might not measure up. It did measure up, with laughs to spare. "Shoes" offered lots of fun twists, including a cameo appearance by Cannie from "Bed." Weiner is witty and charming, and I couldn't stop laughing or crying through the entire book -- sometimes simultaneously. This is my favorite book this year!
Rating: Summary: Blech Review: Good in Bed was so good. This one stinks.
Rating: Summary: Another win for Jennifer Weiner Review: I thoroughly enjoyed In Her Shoes as much as Good In Bed. More wonderfully sweet and funny characters you will fall in love with.
Rating: Summary: Try it- You might like it Review: I read the first review on this page and decided to get the book anyway. I had read Good in Bed on a recent vacation after I picked it up with some other books on a whim. Never heard of Weiner or the book, and I loved them both. It was one of those great books--you know, the kind where when you finish, you don't want to let go of the characters. So, I heard that In Her Shoes was something of a sequel, so I rushed out and bought it. While I was disappointed that I didn't have much of an opportunity to learn more about Cannie, Joy and Nifkin, I was so distracted by my interest in Rose and Maggie that I hardly remembered why I bought the book in the first place. Weiner does such a great job of writing about human, likeable characters that I was completely caught up in their lives. As quickly as I read the book, and as anxious as I was to see how it all turned out, I dreaded turning the final page because I didn't want to let go of these characters either. To me, that is how I judge a good book. If the characters show up in my dreams or if I just find myself wondering about what happened to them weeks after I finished the book, then it is a winner on my list. Good job Weiner! Can't wait for the next one...
Rating: Summary: Great Good In Bed Follow Up Review: Ms. Weiner's debut, Good In Bed, left me eager for her next book, and In Her Shoes did not dissapoint. ... from the moment I opened this book, I was hooked, captivated by real and compelling characters who are just like so many people you know. Including yourself. Jennifer Weiner has a gift for creating characters who's greatest weaknesses are also what makes them so charming and likeable. In this particular book, the focus is on sisters, Maggie and Rose. Rose is the heavy set, intelligent, highly succesful one. Maggie, two years younger, is beautiful, outgoing, but not school or book smart (at first) and jumping from one job failure to the next. The relationship between Maggie and Rose is at the crux of this book -- complex because of a difficult past shadowed by a family tragedy. Jealousy threatens to tear these two apart, particularly through an act of deceipt. However, these two sisters find out that the ties that bind them are stronger than anything threatening to tear them apart. More than a Bridget Jones type story, this book will tug at your heartstrings, make you cheer for these likeable, perfectly imperfect girls all the way. Also parallel to the story is a Grandmother who links them to their past, and draws them toward a happy future. If you like happy endings, funny anecdotes, and great characters, this book is for you.
Rating: Summary: When the shoe is on the other foot, Weiner is at her best! Review: In the mid-'80s my sister enlisted in the military. After boot camp, we saw her on infrequent leaves, occasionally on holidays, but we stayed in touch mostly via letters and phone calls. Following one of her brief visits home, I noticed a few items of clothing were missing but thought nothing of it. Accompanying her next letter was a picture of her standing at attention in front of an army locker. Peeking out from the small but neatly stacked pile of clothing on the top shelf was the unmistakable pattern of my blue and white floral miniskirt, one of the missing items from my wardrobe. Now one might think that this finding would have outraged me, but it didn't. On the contrary, this discovery was par for the course. Anyone who has ever had a sister can relate to the above scenario and will therefore definitely understand the relationship that Jennifer Weiner has created in IN HER SHOES with her sister act, Rose and Maggie Feller. Rose is a successful Princeton graduate, an up-and-coming lawyer with a closet full of the very best and most expensive designer shoes on the market. A tad on the heavy side, Rose lacks only two things: a fulfilling love life and a healthy self-esteem. Maggie is Rose's carefree, careless and younger size two sister, whose dyslexia has kept her back on the career front. She has held a bevy of positions, from salesperson in a Banana Republic to dog groomer at the local pet shop. In the love arena, she has had more than her share of one-night stands and affairs, but she too lacks a fulfilling love life and a healthy self-esteem. The sisters lost their mother when they were very young and were brought up by their father, who was aimless without his true love, and a stereotypical evil stepmother. In one respect, IN HER SHOES is about the lasting effect that loss has on the two sisters and the life choices they make. But the story is also a journey of survival and self-discovery for Rose and Maggie --- a journey that takes them to Florida, where they rediscover a long-forgotten grandmother brimming with familial wisdom and direction. In her sophomore effort, like other great storytellers, Weiner writes what she knows --- she revisits the Princeton campus featured in her first book, focuses on the weight problem of one of her main characters and provides a dysfunctional family. However, Weiner proved that she excels at fleshing out characters and sharing with the reader their motivations and development in her debut novel GOOD IN BED; IN HER SHOES is no different. Weiner offers strong and likable characters that expand with their growing worlds. As the old adage alludes to, one never knows what someone else's life is truly like until you've walked in their shoes for a day. Maggie and Rose have walked clearly diverse paths in life but they share shoes --- figuratively and literally --- and, in each other's shoes, their notions of what makes the other one tick are challenged daily and they even find themselves self-evaluating in new ways. Weiner laces the stories with her trademark wit, sarcasm and real world insight. When the shoe is on the other foot, Weiner is at her best. --- Reviewed by Roberta O'Hara
