Rating: Summary: Great Story but Lame Characters Review: But the facts uncovered about what goes on at Plum Island are interesting and scary enough to make this book well worth reading. Just like John Irving has a thing for dismemberment, Demille has a thing for middle aged law enforcers who attract beautiful younger women with daddy complexes. He waters down great research and great stories by throwing in sex for the sake of sex. Maybe he's pandering to the romance novel set for cross-over sales.
The story is very interesting and compelling however. Not just for the Plum Island "exposee", but also for his traetment of "what may be" concerning pirate hunter Captain Kidd's treasure.
Rating: Summary: great writer Review: DeMille is the best suspense writer out there. I read very little fiction because it doesn't hold my interest, but his books will keep you guessing until the end. Never predictable or dull, this is one of his best works. Highly reccomended.
Rating: Summary: THIS PLUM ISLAND WON'T MAKE YOU SICK Review: I Don't know what the other reviewers were reading, to think that this book was slow and unfunny. These are probably the people who laugh at puns and riddles on P.B.S. I don't know how to make it more clear, I loved Plum Island, especially the lead character John Corey he made me laugh out loud (haha) funny dialogue. This is my first Demille novel and I loved his writing style. Demille is very good all around, his characters are well developed, his mystery is well structured, the action is great, and his rap up is fun fun fun. I quickly ran out and purchased "The Lion's Game" just because John Corey is featured in it. I love this Guy.
Rating: Summary: The book's beauty lies in the details. Review: I have attempted to read this book on many occassions but somehow I have never been able to get past a certain point with all of the details. But Nelson DeMille is my absolute favorite author and I knew that if I just kept holding on the pay off would be big. This book is true to form. It is slow to develop both in terms of the plot and the characters. But once this book takes hold (like all of DeMille's for me) you cannot put it down. The last 200 pages are suspenseful and funny. I should say the entire book is funny even though about death as seen through the eyes of Det. Corey. Why 5 stars if I had to struggle through the first half of the book? Well, DeMille has huge payoffs and this one did not disappoint. All of the details mean something and add to the ultimate enjoyment. I have never been disappointed in DeMille book. So if you like books that slowly place the dots and then connects them (through a sarcastic NYPD detective)this book is for you.
Rating: Summary: I liked Corey !! Review: I know a lot of people found John Corey to be a little too much to handle, but I thought he was well-rounded and humerous.
The one thing I did find unbelievable was that in spite of all the things Corey did to Tobin, he managed to live. I am glad Corey did not kill him and that Tobin will get to face justice but come on !!! I can "suspend my belief" as much as the next person but some things are just a little out there.
All in all it was a good book with a decent plot.
Rating: Summary: Stop . . . .you're killing me! Review: I like the DeMille characters. John Corey is the kind of character that pops up in Vietnam as an officer or an enlisted man, on airplanes, or working for "the Company." If you like that style of protaganist, wise-cracking, irreverant, rough around the edges, funny but self-effacing nonetheless, you'll enjoy the heck out of Plum Island. If you don't, go back to LeCarre and Furst, two distinguished authors who write great novels and where nowhere in their body of work appear anyone even remotely resembling John Corey.Corey is a New York City Detective recuperating from a near fatal shoot out. He's staying out on Long Island where DeMille grew up and still lives, I understand, in far posher environs. Corey, like all good protagonists, very reluctantly gets drawn into a web of intrigue, lies, arrogance, sex and murder that mark all DeMille (and all good) mysteries. If this is your cup of tea, or glass of beer, or flute of champagne, you're in for a real treat.
Rating: Summary: couldn't finish Review: I liked the sarcasm and wit of the main character, but for heavens sake, I want a thriller to move along at a brisker pace. I lost interest 2/3 of the way through.
Rating: Summary: Nelson Demille wrote THIS book? Review: I loved Charm School and The Gold Coast, so when I read the blurbs on the cover of Plum Island that this novel combined the best of both styles I was excited to start reading. What the heck happened to my Nelson Demille? It's hard to believe the same man wrote all three books. I kept waiting for Plum to "kick in" but it never did. In fact, it turned out to be extemely corny. I read a review that suggested that it was meant to be a parody. Who knows? A MAJOR disappointment. If you've never read Demille before don't start with this one. You'll might be so underwhelmed with ND that you might miss the EXCELLENT Charm School and Gold Coast.
Rating: Summary: Corey makes you laugh out loud and roll your eyes! Review: I read Lion's Game first, so my introduction to John Corey was a little out of order. My first DeMille book was Charm School and I fell in love with his work then. Lion's Game was better than Plum Island for Corey's quirky, eccentric characteristics, but he's such an interesting guy, you have to love him. The action is good. This book is a little predictable, but fun anyway. After these two Corey books, I do wonder how he ends up with the women, though.......Excellent author. I would always recommend Nelson DeMille.
Rating: Summary: This is "Plum" good readin' Review: I'm glad I read this. It was my first Demille book and won't be my last. I've already started The Gold Coast, and so far I like it even more. This is a story told by an NYPD detective who is recouperating from bullet wounds in one of the ritzy areas of Long Island. It involves murder, buried treasure, love (or perhaps more accurately, lust), greed, and biological warfare agents. Demille's use of dialog and voice of narration is great. It was so refreshing to read this after trudging through a Clancy novel. He must average two wisecracks a page. And I found all of them to be funny. That's probably why I like his writing style so much. Maybe it's not for everybody. I have a feeling there's more than a few women would get a little steamed by some of his remarks. This isn't a short read and there's not always a lot of action, but the story and writing style make it a page turner. Demille is now one of my favorites and I look forward to reading more of his work.
