Rating: Summary: Lucky Me Review: After reading this book, I fell more and more in love with his writing. I just love the crazy satire and the characters he creates! "Lucky You" is awesome. I want more!!!!!!! Ask and we shall recieve! He has a new one called "Sick Puppy" coming out in fall of 1999 or january of 2000. He is bringing back my favorite character, ex gov. Skink! I can't wait....
Rating: Summary: The bottom of the Hiaasen barrel Review: I've read a half dozen of Hiaasen's books and this one I would have to rank as the worst. The story was rather predictable and didn't surprise me, and the characters were all lackluster and unlikeable. The book's main themes were based on racism and religion, two genres which are not at the top of my comedy scale. If you are new to Hiaasen, I'd suggest one of my favorites, either Native Tongue or Stormy Weather.
Rating: Summary: The worst he's written. Review: I couldn't wait for the latest Hiaasen book to come out in paperback - they're usually clever and exciting. But this one is a bomb. I couldn't get past the second chapter. The story is filled with a hatred for all things conservative. I don't mind his opinions, but it hardly makes for a good read. Next time I'll scan the book first before I buy one of his. It's the kind of read that makes you wish you could return books if they're not up to snuff. Carl, go back to slanting the news - it's where liberals belong!
Rating: Summary: Paperback Paradise Review: For those in dire need of a summer paperback read, look no further than "Lucky You." It's an oasis of pleasure. With vivid and unforgettable characters and loads of laughs, if you don't offend easily and have a good sense of humor, you're bound to have a ball. On a personal note, I think this book would make a great film. I would really love to see Pam Grier as JoLayne Lucks (wouldn't she just rage in the fight scene between her and Chub?) and Robert Forster would be great opposite her as Tom. (They were both excellent together in "Jackie Brown") Maybe someone will listen... or... maybe not. Just a thought.
Rating: Summary: The name Hiassen virtually guarantees a great read! Review: I have read every Carl Hiassen book I could get my hands on. His sense of humor is compelling. I laugh out loud, can't put the book down, and lose a tremendous amount of sleep. But is it worth it! Please Carl....KEEP WRITING AND I'LL KEEP READING!
Rating: Summary: not up to hiaasen's usual standard. Review: these characters were not as developed as most of hiaasen's. i enjoy his put down of the uncontrolled development of my home state. some of the controlled development goes too far as well. i especially enjoy skink. he tells it like it should be! in this "lucky" some of the characters were just not believeable. also, some of their actions. i was disappointed, as i have read all of the author's works so far.
Rating: Summary: the best yet! Review: i've read all of carl haaisen's novels and this is the craziest!.... his characters remind me of the people that i work with in seabrook, new hampshire...
Rating: Summary: pure unadulterated Hiaason, magnificant Review: AS A FAN OF CARL HIAASON, I ANXIOUSLY AWAITED THE PUBLCATION OF HIS LATEST NOVEL, "LUCKY YOU " AND ,AS USUAL,I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED. HIS CRAZY PLOT LINES AND EVEN CRAZIER CHARACTERS MAKE READING HIS WORDS, A PURE JOY. I ONLY WISH I LIVED IN SOUTHERN FLORIDA,NOT FOR THE WEATHER, BUT SO I CAN REGULARLY READ HIS COLUMN IN THE MIAMI HERALD
Rating: Summary: Best Hiaasen Yet!! Review: I loved this book. Great wacky characters as usual from Hiaasen. Makes you want to stay away from rural Florida, but so do his other novels.
Rating: Summary: "Lucky You" Another Hiassen Pageturner Review: On a recent trip to Florida with my wife and kids, I was ever watchful of running into the quirky and perverted Hiassen-like characters, so cleverly portrayed in funny but seriously disturbing plots. Disturbing because I know that there are wacko people out there, ready to take advantage of someone's luck or badluck. Call me paranoid. Call me unable-to-separate-fiction-from-reality, but is it my imagination that Carl Hiassen has single-handedly undone the marketing strategies of the Florida Chambers of Commerce and Disney World? Hasn't Carl met ANYONE who's normal he could write about? (That wouldn't be fun to read about, would it.) I always feel a bit dirty when I'm immersed in a Hiassen book, but they are oh so good! Just when you think it is safe to go back into the water - - another less-than-wholesome character does a less-than-wholesome act to a less-than-heroic hero or heroine. Hey, life can be like that, can't it? Lucky me. --- Ted DeCorte
