Rating: Summary: JANE DOE IS WORTH READING! Review: This was my first R.J. Kaiser novel that I read and I enjoyed it greatly. I discovered Mr. Kaiser in a local bookstore and thought his novels looked interesting and bought all three of his novels. "JANE DOE" is about a police chief, Frank, who wakes up and finds a dead prostitute at his home. Abby Hooper, a friend of Frank's, who also is in law enforcement, can't believe that Frank would do anything like that. Abby and Frank must discover who the real killer is before Frank is convicted. This book takes you into the lives of drug dealers, pimps, and prostitues. Jane Doe also takes you on a trip from Sacramento to San Francisco. R.J. Kaiser is a fresh new voice in fiction!
Rating: Summary: Cliff hanger with twists Review: When Frank Keegan wakes the day after Valentine's Day with a massive hangover and bloody scratches on his face, he's at a loss as to how they got there and what he did the night before. No amount of effort brings any sense of memory, so he has no choice but to struggle on about his business, which includes a game of bowling opposite the police chief and her team.Abby Hooper is the controversial new police chief who has just beaten Keegan out of the job. She's young, qualified and enthusiastic and facing sexist opposition from at least half the town. That half doesn't include Keegan who, in spite of the fact that he has just broken up with her mother, likes Abby very much. When fishermen find the nude body of a teenage girl at water's edge by Keegan's dock, all signs point to Keegan as her murderer. As the story progresses, Frank learns facts he doesn't want Abby to know and Abby becomes more suspicious of Frank. Here's a cliff-hanger story that is full of surprises and should keep you glued to the tape deck until you find out just what did happen. Characters are deftly drawn . One of the problems with tapes is that men must read women's voices credibly (and vice versa). Richard Rohan handles that problem nicely.
Rating: Summary: Quite good. Review: While not as exciting as his first book Payback, Mr. Kaiser again manages a fast paced murder mystery combined with an interesting and unlikely romance. When the body of a 13 year old 'Jane Doe' is found, it is quickly determined to be murder however motive and murderer are yet to be discovered. Enter Frank, an ex-cop and Abby, current chief of police. Mr. Kaiser introduces Frank and Abby knowing just how much the reader needs to get a feel for the characters without overloading on extraneous detail. Because the writing is quick and to the point, by the middle of the book the characters are familiar and intense and the reader has already learned and dealt with the past and present torments of each character both professionally and personally. I found myself more entertained by the relationship between Frank and Abby than the actual murder plot intself which tended to lead to characters of little interest. Fortunately there is a nice balance of mystery and romance throughout the story. While the ending was a bit disappointing and anticlimactic, I wouldn't let it discourage me from reccomending this book as well as Payback.
