Summary: Genius! Hemmingways picture of a country torn is brilliant!
Review: Hemmingway validates his mastery of the written word through the eyes of Robert Jordan. An ordinary man with and extraordinary talent in demolitions. Jordan's mission to demolish a bridge becomes a seemingly more difficult task as he finds himself falling in love with a beautiful young spanish girl named Maria. Together they find that a life lived without intensly enjoying every menial moment is a passionless one. Struggling against adversity in a country torn apart a new found world emerges. Bravo Mr. Hemingway, bravo!

Summary: The Beethoven's 5th of novels.
Review: For Whom the Bell Tolls is serious Hemingway. The themes are timeless and classic, the only truly important concepts in life, that is, life itself, loving, death. The themes overlay and underlay and penetrate everything including the setting, the characters and the action. It has theme but no melody. It relentlessly demands your constant attention yet does not entertain. It is serious. It is longhair. It is the Beethoven's 5th of novels.

Hemingway is the greatest. He is the one who taught us all to write. For Whom the Bell Tolls is great but does not truly fit in the body of his work. It is an island of something but I'm not yet sure what.

Summary: It tolls for anyone who has to read this boring book
Review: I just can't get with Hemingway, and I have trudged through five or six of his allegedly best works. This one as usual has a boring plot, characters that you can't possibly care about, and dull prose. A real yawner. Would very many people think he was great if they hadn't been told that every day of their lives by their high school English teachers?

Summary: There is greatness in it.
Review: Just finished listening to the audiobook version, and this is my first experience of Hemingway other than a couple of short stories in a distant academic past. I can see that his reputation is deserved, and will most certainly check out his other major titles. The story was absorbing and the characters true and complex in their relationships. The romance between Robert Jordan and Maria was beautiful and heartbreaking. Most of all, the dialogue has an utterly authentic ring, and transports you into rural Spanish culture. Much of this effect is due, I'm sure, to Alexander Adams' masterful reading, and especially his facility with this Latinized language.

Summary: A true masterpiece
Review: This book is an excellent book. But, if you really want to understand it, spend part of your life living in Spain like Hemingway. Then, you can finally appreciate how he writes in "Spanish" and translates literally to English, especially the cursing. You will love the country much more than reading books or visiting Madrid or Barcelona...

Summary: not his best
Review: Hemingway wrote many good things, but this isn't one of them. The title refers to a poem by John Donne, in which the poet seems to suggest that the tribulations of any humans are the business of others as well. Hemingway has applied this notion to the Spanish Civil War, of which he was a first-hand witness. The plight of the Spaniards here should be the concern of all of us. The problem is, his point is clearly made by the title, and the rest of the book does nothing to improve upon it. This long tome about rebels trying to blow up a bridge ends poorly; the characters don't arouse too much sympathy, and the whole thing goes nowhere, except where the fine title has already taken it.

Summary: Enthralling
Review: This was the first book by Hemmingway that I ever read. I was enthralled at his style of writing and development of character. He has a very plain, honest manner of stating the reality that is overlooked either intentionally or unintentionally. For Whom The Bell Tolls is a book to be read and remembered.

Summary: I found this book very intersting
Review: I am grade eleven student and chose to read this book for my ISU study. I was required t read the book, report on it and write a thesis essay on it. I found the book to be very sad, romantic and painful. I thought that the use of Pilar's charcter to display the attitude of Hemingway towards the killing of the fascits was incredible. When i read how Pilar explictly descirbed the accounts of the killings, it made my heart ache and i felt like i was part of teh trio sitting on the hill listening to her retelling the story. The part i found most moving was when Robert and Maria, had to say goodye to eachother. I found it heart wretching because they thought that they had overcome all obstacles and then by a single complication, they happy live together was runied. When i read the goodbye scene between the two, i had tears in my eyes. I would recommend to anyone to read this book. I believe it is a truly a great story about the trials and tributulations on love, life and war.

Summary: A truly magnificent work
Review: This book is the best book I have ever read. In it, Hemingway deeply explores the main character, Robert Jordan. The reader is able to get a thorough understanding of this remarkably realistic character. His philosophy is that war is horrible, but necessary at times. He does not wish to execute some orders, but knows that he must. He does not like his fate, but he accepts it. I quickly found myself caught in the strong plot, and enjoyed Hemingway's rich detail. The book is elegant and yet gruesome; there is a stark contrast between the love of Robert Jordan and Maria, and the atrocities of war. This book is excellent. It will make you feel a myriad of emotions and will keep you turning the pages. I strongly recommend this book to all who love Hemingway's novels, because it is simply his best work. Hemingway goes deeper into the characters and their nostalgic reminiscences than any other. For those of you who are not familiar with Hemingway's novels, I strongly recommend that you read this book and become familiar with an outstanding author.
