Rating: Summary: A Page Turner! Review: EDEN CLOSE by Anita ShreveEDEN CLOSE by Anita Shreve centers on a murder that takes place almost 20 years ago in a small rural town in upstate New York. Andrew, now working in sales and advertising in New York city, returns home for his mother's funeral and brings back with him memories of his childhood friend Eden and that murder which took place next door at the Close family's residence. Eden Close was a childhood friend of Andrew, he being seventeen at the time of the murder, and Eden only fourteen. He recalls the blossoming of their friendship, the recklessness that was part of Eden's personality, and the murder of her father that was still a mystery to Andrew all these years later. He remembers bits and pieces of what may have happened, but on that fateful night, all he remembers is hearing a gunshot, screams, and nothing more. Upon his return home for the funeral, Andrew stays to deal with the family property and get it ready for sale. He is the only surviving member, his father having passed away five years earlier from a heart attack, and he is an only child. As he goes through the many old items in the house, he recalls his childhood and the murder and accident that caused Eden to lose her sight. While Eden was such a big part of Andrew's life when they were growing up, he has had nothing to do with her since the murder. He finds out that she's been shut inside her home with Edith Close for all these years, except for a few years where she spent time in a special facility. He becomes obsessed with his need to get in contact with Eden, and to find out what has happened to her, despite Edith's determination to keep Andrew away from Eden. Andrew does succeed in getting in contact with Eden again. And slowly, she feeds him the story about what really happened twenty years ago, as they slowly rekindle their friendship and lost love, behind Edith's back. What Andrew finds out is a shocker, and the book culminates in a scene straight out of the movies. I really enjoyed EDEN CLOSE. I started the book having no idea what it was about, but I was not disappointed. A page-turner from the very first page, it took me only two days to read the entire book. While parts of the plot I did find predictable, it was the journey of the story that kept me going, not the ending. EDEN CLOSE comes highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: I read this book avidly. Great, great insights, plot! Review: Eden Close is a classic story, sensitively written and avoiding cliches. The character of Eden Close is both one we can feel bad for and bad with - empathy and anger, a strange combination. Shreve paints pictures and gives a sense of direction trhoughout. I loved it as I love all her books! Let's have more!
Rating: Summary: Outstanding uncanny ability to bring you back to chi ldhood Review: Eden Close is a great read with a smooth style. The story keeps you interested on several levels and adds a nice touch of humour when things get deep.
Rating: Summary: Eden Close Review: Eden Close is one of Anita Shreve's best. The story has a slow, meandering quality with an undercurrent of mystery. As is often true with Ms. Shreve's books, the reader suspects that things may go a bit awry, or take an unsuspected turn, as one approaches the end of the story--and Eden Close is no exception. As a result, I find that I often put her books down for a bit when I get to the last ten or so pages, at least for a couple of hours if not for a day, both because I don't want to finish the book (which has been a good read) and because I like to ponder just what will happen before finding out exactly what does. If you haven't read anything by Shreve, this is a great one to start with; if you have, you'll truly enjoy this one!
Rating: Summary: A book you may skip Review: I don't recommend this book to people who are looking for a truly literary experience. The book is boring, predictable, and shallow. The characters are fully described to the point that there is no more room for the audience to imagine another side/attitudes of the characters. There is no more room for imagination! Everything is already offered to the reader. The plot is typical (a lot of writers do this plot). The title is inappropriate because it is not in the perspective of Eden (except small parts in the ending of each chapter which, by the way, are out of place and do not help in the development of the story). It is more on the perspective of Andrew. This loses the mystery of the persona of Eden. The ending is so disappointing. If you place the ending in the middle of the book, you would still get the story and it won't make a difference!
Rating: Summary: Hard To Put Down Review: I found this book easy to read. The two main characters grabbed me right away. There is alittle mystery and romance bound together in this book. I felt Andrew's character;was heartwarming and tender.I enjoyed this book immensely!
Rating: Summary: Eden Close Review: I have become an Anita Shreve fan and plan to read more of her books. Her weave of characters, crime and passion is what has hooked me. This is my third book by Ms. Shreve and, again, I have thoroughly enjoyed it. I just recommended Ms. Shreve to someone the other day!
Rating: Summary: Another Shreve Winner Review: I have been on a Shreve kick ever since Pilot's Wife, and this one doesn't disappoint. Although I guessed Eden's "secret" almost immediately, the story unfolded naturally and Shreve's writing was as wonderful as ever. Shreve captures the romance and feelings of childhood with great sensitivity. And hooray - a Shreve book with an almost happy ending!
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Review: I have read all of Shreve's other novels, but somehow always neglected to pick this one up. What a mistake that was. Eden Close is a beautifully written work, full of the intrigue and romance that Shreve is known for. As always, she keeps us guessing right up to the end, and leaves us with a taste in our mouths for more. Two childhood friends, on the brink of romance, find themselves there again nearly twenty years later. Eden is blind, a result of a tragic shooting in her teen years, and together they must reveal what has been hiding in the darkness all these years. Superb story, one of Shreve's best.
Rating: Summary: A most intriguing story Review: I have read most of Anita Shreve's books and thought that none could be better than her "Strange fits of Passion" but I could not put this book down!! It tells a tale of long forgotten love and tragedy. But has some twists you wouldn't expect. This is a wonderful novel.
