Rating: Summary: Unencumbered by details... Review: This book is aimed at the general reading public. Consequently, it lacks the detailed minutiae typically associated with military histories. That's good news for general readers who just want an interesting story. Bad if you're looking for details about organization, equipment, training, logistics, communications, etc. Stephen Ambrose, whose books were also aimed at a general audience, did a much better job of including sufficient detail in his work. Also, like many other books in this genre, "Ghost Soldiers" suffers from a dearth of adequate maps. You simply cannot write about military operations and not include good maps. As an aside, it may not be easy for American readers to dismiss the brutality of the Japanese. After reading "Ghost Soldiers", the nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki may seem less regretable. Almost forgot, there's no index either!
Rating: Summary: Excellent Book! Review: This book turned out to be a good historical coverage of an event that took place during World War II. The Japanese prison camp named Palawan was the site of a huge slaughter of American P.O.W.'s.After recieving this intelligence a plan was formulated to save the P.O.W.'s of the Cabanatuan prison camp before there was another mass killing.A select group of 121 Army Rangers were given the assigment to rescue the Americans who were being held prisoner by the Japanese. Many of these prisoners were survivors of the infamous Bataan Death March. The author gives a good description of this march.Through this book you are given the details of this rescue operation. You are able to meet some of the individuals who were involved in this daring rescue. You are shown how Phillipine guerillas were utilized to pull off this rescue. The author also describes the inhumane cruelty that was used by the Japanese jailers on the American prisoners. This is one of the better books about the subject that you will ever read. Buy this book. It is outstanding.
Rating: Summary: Incredible WWII story Review: This is absolutely one of the best war stories I have ever read (if not one of the best stories in general). Even as a history major I had never learned much about this atrocity, and this book helped fill that void. I could not put the book down, it was an incredible gripping account of this horrific event. The book covers everything from the Bataan Death March to the liberating of the POWs. As you read the book, the author does a great job with paiting a vivid picture, allowing readers to become emotionally attached to the soldiers. Many points in this book left me sick to my stomach because of the reality of the story. This piece of US history is often forgotten and I would suggest that everyone go out and buy this book and read it! It's phenominal!
Rating: Summary: Powerful book of real life heroism from WW2 Review: Well written and researched, Ghost Soliders recounts the true story of the liberation of American troops from behind enemey lines during World War Two. American and British troops had survived the Bataan Death March in the Phillipines. These remarkable soliders survived three years in a horrible prison camp and were eventually liberated by the U.S. Army 6th Ranger Battalion. The story of their harrowing days in the death camps and ultimate salvation makes for inspired reading. It's a great example of the human will to live and the bravery of many of the enlisted men from World War Two. Highly recommended.
