Summary: Excellent
Review: This book makes for fascinating reading. I am leary of most treatments of the beginng of the human race because of their obvious evolutionary slant but once this part is over the book is a joy to read.

For those who complain about it being too difficult well pardon Mr. Roberts for being a brilliant man.

My suggestion is to read your child's fifth grade history book and all its filled with more lies than the average newspaper in Communist Cuba. If you want facts and a brilliant analysis of them read Roberts. He is free of Euro-bashing multicultural propoganda written to appease some liberal, hyphenated, ethnic minority. His other book "The triumph of the West' is a supperb defense of western culture.

Summary: History of the World
Review: This is a very good book. If you are looking for a good overview of world history then this is the book for you. One thing I found slightly annoying was that in parts of this book the author jumps from group of people to group of people, but the majority of that occurs in the beginning. Over all a very good book to ground your place in man's history.

Summary: A definitive document
Review: This is simply the best general history book I have yet read (I am a history teacher). The writing is sharp and sophisticated (and not without wit). For a one-volume tome, it does a fine job of encompassing human history. Roberts expertly melds general trends with singular events. Roberts' basic driver of change is cultural interchange (war, trade, migration, etc), hence the (unfounded) accusation of Eurocentrism. Roberts does not spare Western excesses, but does not apologize for them either. A jewel.

Summary: best one volume history of the world there is
Review: This work is the best one-volume history of the world I have ever had the pleasure of owning. I own two editions of this grand text and keep reading it over and over.

I begins with the history of humaniods, and continues up to close to the present day. I covers all the major points of history, and most of the minor points... even if with just a paragraph or two.

I use this as a reference work a lot, as well as for just a history book that reads well for pleasure.

Highly recommended.
