Summary: Almost But Not Quite!
Review: This book almost had it but not quite. Too much technobabble for a computer illiterate person to read. Unless your highly advanced in computers, don't read this book. Good action and interesting plotline (a little far fetched) but too much computers!

Summary: An interesting book
Review: I at first thought that this book would be a slight bit flaky. The more of it that I read the better that it got. I enjoyed reading Strokk's (the hired gun) experiences in Afganistan. Here is another new villain from Pineiro. The Mayan and their influence also added to the book. I was very impressed with the tactics that the Mayan warrior used to handle Strokk and his mercenaries. The finale of the book explaining the Mayan influence on the millennium was also very captivating. Where I was at first skeptical of this book I wound having an enjoyable read. A must buy.

Summary: Hot Stuff !
Review: Cameron Slater was SO sexy! I just wanted to feel his chest. Nice work, RJ (RJ meaning reject).

Summary: great spin on year 2000- dissapointing ending
Review: it's too bad - this book was amazing. Pineiro ruined the last two chapters.

Summary: Disappointing -- don't waste your money
Review: Piniero starts out with some interesting ideas, but fails to create a book with a coherent plot, or believeable characters. His run-on sentences, uni-dimensional characters, and many inaccuracies make the book hard to read. Descriptions of Mayan culture (particularly its calendar)are novel for most readers, but better described on several web sites. The mix of computer hacking, archeology, Russian spies, the FBI, and radio astonomers is not coherent. The graphic violence does not move the plot along. The inaccuracies and improbable events are so bad, they are actually humerous. I got tired of reading in the middle of the book, whereas the author seemed to get tired and just stopped writing at the end.

Summary: Great! **BUY THE BOOK**
Review: Any person out in the world with computer knowlege would love this book. People with low to zip computer knowlege I do not recommend this book, being it would be to hard to understand what us happening...

Summary: Good start, poor finish
Review: I thought this would be a real winner. It has all the pieces of fiction I love to read about, Computers, Science Fiction, Archaeology and ruthless assassins. Unfortunately, the author never put them all together in a believeable or logical recipe. Also, the ending left me wanting, it was as if the author just gave up because he had enough pages written. I also cannot believe that the hacker could possibly go to jail for the heroines poor driving ability.

Summary: Oh Please!
Review: I was intrigued by the description of this book. It sounded like it had such possibilities that I just HAD to try it. However, I felt the author was just trying to impress us with his computer knowledge. I do have a working knowledge of computers (hence my interest) but, geez. How in the world do you expect your average Joe Blow to understand this?

Sorry. I passed on the remaining 1/4 of the book. It wasn't worth my time.

Summary: Interesting spin on Y2K
Review: Mr. Pineiro approaches the "millenium question" from the fascinating perspective of a merging of computer science, anthropology, and astronomy.

To avoid giving away too much information, I offer the following.

The book opens with a computer virus suddenly locking up computers worldwide for 20 seconds. To search for the source and a cure for the virus, the FBI turns their top cybercrime investigator, Dr. Susan Garnett, loose on the problem.

Meanwhile, a pair of married astronomers, a Japanese husband and Japanese-American wife, conducting SETI research with a radio telescope in Chile, note unusual activity from the constellation Centaur.

Also meanwhile, a French bureaucrat, facing unemployment and disgrace, hires a team of mercenaries to steal a cure for the virus in the hopes that he can salvage his career by selling the cure to the rest of the world.

Dr. Garnett, isolating the virus, traces its source back to a spot on the Yucatan peninsula. At this point she contacts Dr. Cameron Slater, an anthropologist and expert on Mayan culture.

The story evolves from there.

The book is an excellent read, with two qualifiers. The ending is a bit anticlimactic and Mr. Pineiro needs to spend just a tad more time researching the zoology of the areas he is writing about.

Summary: Great First Half - Hazy Finish
Review: R.J. Pinero caught my attention with Y2K. I really enjoyed the "down-to-earth" way he crafted a technology based concept into a really good book.

So, I bought 01-01-00 with high expectations.

At first, perhaps because I'm in the network security business and actually know one of the key characters, I was intrigued, even a bit excited. It really promised to be a great read.

Even when he began to inject the Mayan angle I was fascinated. Hey..."Chariots of the Gods" made the premise almost believable.

However, I suspect he just got tired of writing and took the easy way out with a surreal ending that left me cold. Too bad. He really has a knack.

O.K. R.J...let's see what you've got!
