Summary: A very Christian portrayal of the 1800's
Review: These books are wonderful for any child who needs inspiration for their spiritual life. The 'Elsie' series is not only a good read, usually, but they also have great historical accuracy. Elsie's father is unkind, perhaps sometimes cruel, but he is not a drunk in any way ... I've heard this is a 'drunkard' tale, but that is flat out wrong.

Yes, I do think that these books are rather outdated, but their straightforwardness and honesty redeems them. I also think any attempt at making them more modern would ruin them. I once saw a description blabbing about one of Elsie's 'boyfriends' - which is totally misleading and makes it sound like a modern dime novel.

There is a lot of serious doctrine in these books, backed up by Scripture after Scripture, very convincingly. It promotes Protestantism very strongly, and also attacks Catholisicm. There will always be a large percentage of people who despise this series. But that fact, I may add, makes them no less valuable to the Christian believer in training up their children in the way they should go.

Summary: An incredible book!
Review: This book is the BEST BOOK I'VE EVER READ!!!!!! I absolutely love this book! Elsie Dinsmore is a girl of about eight and is a devout CHRISTIAN. this story is about how Elsie is brought up in her Grandfather's house. But her "family" slanders her for being a christian, but never the less she survives depending on her love of Jesus. No one cared for her exept her nanny and her Aunt's friend, Rose Allison. She has never seen her father and keeps praying that her daddy will come back, and as soon as he does, her life changes. This is a wonderful book and I reccomend it to any one from adults to children.

Summary: I loved the story as a child and have re-read it .
Review: This is a very sweet story of a young girl whose mother has died and has been left with an uncle to live. She loves her father very much even though she has never met him. She trusts Christ to help her in her every day life and her struggles are all based on how Christ would have her to respond. A young friend of mine read the book and said that she was too sweet and too perfect, but I enjoyed the story immensely. I would say that an 10-year girl to possibly 12-year old would enjoy it. (I am a sucker for a happy ending!

Summary: Not my favorite
Review: Ugh! When I first started to read this book, I thought it was exciting, what with the unjust punishments inflicted by Miss Day, the governess, etc,. Unfortunately, it got very sappy very quickly. I for one cannot stand goody-goody heroines. Yes, it does sound charming--a wonderfully angelic girl, but one must not go overboard.

Summary: You can't put these books down!
Review: When I was 10 years old, my family received a large box in the mail containing books that my mom had ordered. In it was the first book of the Elsie Dinsmore collection. My mom handed the book to me and said, "Here, this is for you." I thanked her, curled up on our recliner, and started reading. I soon fell in love the book. It was so exciting, so wonderfully written, and I felt so much like I had jumped right into the book. I found book one not very interesting because of how cruel Elsie's father was to her. A friend of mine told me how excellent the next books were, and so I kept on reading. I am now thirteen years old, and the Elsie Dinsmore books are my favorite books I have ever read. Every once in a while I get a couple of books, and I now have 12 hard back books that I love so much. I am planning on saving them so that my children and then their children can enjoy a heartwarming, clean book. For those of you out there (I'd recommend kids ten years old and up) who are searching for a great book, I recommend this one above all others.

Summary: "Elsie Dinsmore" was the best book I ever read!
Review: When I was nine I would not read the first Elsie book even though my sister liked it. I thought it was dumb. A year later I started reading it again, and I could not put the book down after one chapter. So I kept on borrowing them from every one I knew. I am only on the third book and I want to read the other twenty-five books. I like the books so much I can't even discribe them. I think I will always keep reading them.

Summary: Read it as a child...been reading it ever since
Review: When I was nine years old a brown grocery bag full of second hand books was dropped off at our house by someone for some reason, and among them was Elsie Dinsmore (minus the front cover and the first six pages.) I read it twice that year, then again when I was ten, then twice more when I was eleven (the same year I read Uncle Tom's Cabin for the first time...another bag of books.) I continued to read Elsie off and on for many years (though I still do not know what happened in the first six pages) and well into adulthood until it fell apart. I put it carefully into a Baggies Zip Lock bag and occasionally take it out for a careful read through. A few years ago I found much to my delight, Elsie's Girlhood while browsing in an antique store, bought it and devoured it many times. I am now forty one years old and still read Elsie. I would love to be able to read the others in the series but do not know where to find them..I have looked!! Though not what you'd call deeply religious, this book intriqued me, inspired me and captured my imagination in a way I cannot explain, but then, I always suspected I was born out of my own time.
