Rating: Summary: Pretty good Bond Review: High Time to Kill is an very enjoyable book to read. This book is the first book in the "The Union" trilogy. In this adventure, Bond finds himself on the icy slopes of the Himalays, in order to get back a secert that is important to the Military, and could help any country that goes to war. The problem is that it was developed in England, and was stolen. It's Bond's mission to get it back, and find who stole it. One of the strenghts of this book is that Bond can't trust anyone b/c there's a double agent in MI5! As bad as that is for Bond, there are more double agents, and more people he can't trust. Raymond has a solid writing style when it comes to his Bond books. The reader will be hooked with every page. Just when there's a down time in the book, something else happens that picks up the pace. This is just incredible. What really hit home for me was the last paragraph of this book. Bond takes a hard look at himself, and how he treats women. I can't wait to get my hands on the other two books about The Union. If you are a fan of 007, then you need to get into this triology. You won't be sorry.
Rating: Summary: Enjoyable Review: I read this book within a week and enjoyed it all the way through. I find Raymond Benson's style of writing easy to read and its easy to pick up this book at any time. If you are a James Bond fan I would recommend to pick up all of his Bond novels to take up time between movies(we still have to 2002 to see the next one).
Rating: Summary: Better than the rest Review: This book is slightly better than the rest of Benson's James Bond books. He has finally proven himself as a successor of Ian Fleming. However, I felt that Benson still lets the movie get the hold of him. Gina Hollander is just like any of the other Bond girls in the movies; Enter - Perform - Exit. I felt that Benson can write more about her.
Rating: Summary: The Double-O-Seven Sanction Review: I've always thought that Trevanian's "Eiger Sanction" would have made a halfway-decent Bond book. As in "Eiger", there are people getting whacked left-and-right despite the fact that a mountain climb in the Himalayas is enough risk as it is. While Bond is looking for valuable defense files stolen from Her Majesty's govenment and then lost when the thieves' plane crashes on the mountain, the thieves have an inside man in Bond's team. Not content with that, there are competing teams as well. One interesting character is a Ghurka soldier working with Bond who turns out to be one of the best right-hand-men 007 has had since Dr. No's Quarrel. This man is a very personable, philosophical sort of guy. Apparently Benson has done some research here on Nepalese and Ghurka folkways. Unfortunately, the bad guys (known as "The Union") are a SPECTRE ripoff--they don't have much new to offer as an adversary. Except for the features on Bond's car (only featured in the opening chapters and already here from a previous book anyway), the gadgetry here is more subtle--personal devices aimed more towards convenience for the user than gee-whiz flash--I wouldn't be surprised if some of that stuff actually exists. The films have always been a bit too gear-happy, and Benson successfully resists overdoing that in his books.
Rating: Summary: Not perfect, but a solid read Review: Benson succeeds in creating a deft, fast-paced story worthy of 007. With an intriguing setup (the Skin 17 scenario and Bond's latest love interest being caught up with the Union--a very interesting group), strong character relationships (Bond vs. Roland being the anchor for this tale), and a tense mountaineering expedition gone wrong, Benson presents us with a James Bond who's somewhat more fleshed-out than his screen counterpart (he's less stolid and more emotionally developed), but is still the suave, tough superspy we know and love. Sean Connery would be proud. (And as an added bonus, this Bond doesn't make lame puns at every turn, which is much appreciated.) One minor quibble: As strong as the story is, sometimes Benson tends to go overboard a little bit in terms of the violence in the story. The gruesome throat-slittings, the beheading scene...they certainly make for chilling visuals, but for a James Bond adventure, where it's better to suggest things rather than show them, they're a little much. (If this was made into a film, they'd have to tone it down quite a bit.) Still it's a fun read, and I eagerly await Bond's next encounter with the Union.
Rating: Summary: raymonds best to date! dark, dangerous, and high altitude Review: A High Time to Kill is by far Benson's best James Bond story so far, and it will be hard to surpass the detail and danger of this spectacular Bond story. everything from the beggining gold match to the climax on top of the world, this story has everything Bond needs. The plot is great, the characters are great, and the action is great. I waited for this one to come out on paperback, and i was sad that i didnt get it earlier. The Union is a great organization (although it is a mirror image of SPECTRE)the follow up, Double Shot, is not as good as this one, but is a good in the Union sort of way. The villian r should I say villians are really good to, and its funny how everybody starts to lose it as they start to climb the mountain. Well thats all i will say. A most have Bond novel
Rating: Summary: Classic James Bond Review: This novel contains the James Bond most of us know well. Bond smokes, drinks, chases women (or do they mostly chase him) and takes them to bed, has an international playboy lifestyle, and he does'nt apologize for any of the above. The novel has a very good plot and decent character development, and with fast paced action so characteristic of Bond adventures. Benson describes geographical regions in minute detail, and this adds to reading enjoyment, a lazy writer would not go to the trouble to do this. Also, in a couple a places in the book Bond does a self-analysis of his life, very well done, as is the book as a whole.
