Rating: Summary: A Childhood Favorite Review: This is a charming, old-fashioned book that details the joys and sorrows of a "good" family, the Peppers, fallen on hard times. It, along with books like "Heidi" and "Little Women" were great favorites of my sisters and I as we were growing up in the 1950s and 60s. The children and their mother (she is a widow) stick together through thick and thin, finally seeing their fortunes improve when they make a new friend, Jasper. (I love the lengths the older daughter goes to in order to make her mother a birthday cake...you will learn to appreciate modern conveniences and abundance!) This is a book that brings back many happy childhood memories...one I hope current generations can also appreciate.
