Rating: Summary: great action, thought-provoking insight Review: A terrific blend of drama and insight that keeps you reading and thinking. The inside scoop on how firefighters do their job is engaging enough, but the author exposes the "old boys club" mentality and her participation in challenging it, and changing it. Paul's admiration for those who serve as firefighters, and sensitivity to the personal struggles involved in this job, come through, leaving the reader inspired and appreciative of the public service these men and women provide. Her thoughtful observations and insight on the issues of discrimination of all types within the department are worthwhile and positive.
Rating: Summary: Action-packed insight to firefighting in a major city. Review: Although the book has not yet been released on the shelves, the Reader's Digest condensed version provides an early glimpse of what will prove to be one of the definitive books on fighting fire in a major metropolitan city. Certainly, the perspective of one of the most hazardous jobs in the country from a women's view is worth noting as well. Caroline Paul reveals to us that first impressions are many times wrong, and is bold enough to share with the reader her experiences while learning this lesson. As a firefighter with over 25 years on the job, I would highly recommend this book to firefighters and non-firefighters alike.
Rating: Summary: Enthralling! Review: An absolutely enthralling book; I just read it this weekend. Amazing stories from an amazing woman. I've done a few ride-alongs with my EMT brother on medical calls (including a PIA and a code), and the excitement of those calls pales beside the fires in this book. Dang, I'm still pumped.
Rating: Summary: A BOOK FOR EVERYONE Review: As a female fire fighter I thought this book was one of the best books I have ever read. It shows the true facts that women in the service have to go through. I thought she used a really good imagery in the book making you feel that you were on the call. This is a good book for fire fighter men and female and for people whoare not fire fighters but like the adrenaline rush of an action book.
Rating: Summary: Excellent look at what it means to be a firefighter Review: As a firefighter, I found Paul's book to be an excellent look at what it means to be a firefighter today. From the battle to get hired, to the training and finally the day to day job. I especially enjoyed her discussion of what her family and friends think about her career choice.
Rating: Summary: As real as it gets Review: Books written by compassionate people always fascinate the most, and Caroline Paul truly is a firefighter who loves her job. Her story of struggle along with a wide variety of action packed fire and rescue adventures won't let you put this book down soon!
Rating: Summary: Couldn't put the book down. Review: Caroline Paul did a terrific job at explaining what it is like to be a female fire fighter in this day and age. Coming from another female fire fighter, i thought that her stories and descriptions were well written and heart felt. Paul's contribution to the fire service has not gone unnoticed and it is women like Paul that have made my entrance into this wonderful profession so much easier. Anyone who is interested in learning about what it is really like to be a female fire fighter should read this book!
Rating: Summary: Excellent Look Into SFFD's Darker Side Review: Caroline Paul did an excellent job on this book! I will admit that when my uncle first sent it to me for christmas, I couldn't help but wonder, "WHAT WERE YOU THINKING!?!?!" However, I gave it a shot and got swallowed up into the book itself, reading over half of it in a little less than 8 hours! When I first got this book, I was just beginning to get into the fire service...Now, three years later I stand an 18 year old firefighter/emt, continuously enthusiastic to learn about my career's heritage and history! I got the opportunity to meet Ms. Paul on a vacation to San Francisco with my family and was fortunate enough to get my book signed! She is a very kind and intelligent young woman and someone whom I look forward to more books from! This is a must read for anyone, fire service or not! If you are looking to get into a truly great career, get started by reading this book...The imagery alone will keep your adrenaline pumping and you won't want to put this great book down!
