Rating: Summary: Great work on spirituality Review: Monroe has written 3 books on O.B.E and this is the first. Written decades ago, it records his experience and findings with OBE. This book contains more details about the astral planes nearer to the vibration of the physical plane we live in physically. It does however contain other dimensions and planes which he labels "Locale 2" and "locale 3".
His second book "Far Journey" is still my all time favourites, as it contains a lot of spiritual findings he has about the meaning of human life, etc. Is there reincarnation? Is there a God? Read all of his books and find out. The reason I like Monroe's book is that he use himself as a guinea pig to explore and investigate. He doesnt try to use religion and his beliefs and try to put it on you.
Monroe was a business man, and ever since he had the OBE experiences since the age of 42, he has been exploring it to find out more about it. After years of experimentation with soundwaves, he finally came up with his Hemi-Sync audios, which are able to induce OBE and altered states suitable to change habits, addictions, etc. In response to one of the review (below or above) who questions Monroe's sanity, Monroe has been doing many experiments about his OBE with the famous Dr Charles Tart, and Tart wrote the introduction to his book! OBE is a very subjective experience, it cannot be proven objectively unless you experience it yourself, therefore people who have never experienced it will try to reason and use logic (which is limited only to their own ignorance/knowledge). Their (the psychologist's) reasonings and logic then becomes their belief (which they will try to prove is the only correct one- hmm, isn't that what they say about people's belief system?). I have personally tried Monroe's technique outline in this book, and it works. Try it if you have the courage! It will prove to you once and for all that you are more than your body. (But of course, you may have a hard time convincing YOUR psychologist!)
Rating: Summary: Altered consciousness Review: Read the books, buy some hemisync cd's and go for a gateway voyage .. you wont regret it. Well you might but the odds of regret are very low. hehe.
Rating: Summary: it changed the rules Review: Reccomended by an IANDS member, JOURNEYS presented a door to me. I opened it and experienced fear, then delight upon having my first of several OBEs. Reading the book showed a pathway for the OBEs for my experience. I subsequently became comfortable with my near death experience. Incredible to go out of body and contact my deceased father. JOURNEYS trashed belief systems and gave me 'knowns' from what I have done in the 'spiritual realm'.
Rating: Summary: That's too bad Review: Robert Monroe died about 3 years ago. Just posting this in response to seeing the LONG post about the fellow who wanted to speak with him. It'd be pretty hard.
Rating: Summary: A classic! Highly recommended! Review: Robert Monroe writes with a style that is informative without being "preachy." His wit, objectivity, and scientific approach adds to his credibility, and further makes the book exciting and enjoyable. The only fault that I found with this book, is the personal techniques that he gives for inducing conscious projection of the astral body are too vague, and provide too little information for one who desires to experience this phenomenon for themselves. Altogether though, this is a good book, and provides much information that is useful to "newbies" and veteran astral travellers alike
Rating: Summary: the very last words of the book Review: The book is great in that if you keep an open mind but also an open eye out for what could be....making up things, you just cant figure it out. Could be a hoax, but the guy sounds credible, at least sober. I also suppose that nobody could have pre-guessed that this book would go through so many printings at the point of writing. So why, I wonder, should he have gotten through all this without having a guarantee for success. Why bother? So there seem to be two more possibilities, he is either very different in the head than most of us. Or he is right. Maybe this is an unusual place for a question, but if you have read the book, maybe you wanna share your opinion. The very last chapter of the book is not by Monroe, but by a psychiatrist, who fills in the reader on who Monroe has actually been(as a business man etc) in his lifetime. This chapter seems to have been added after Monroe died. On the very last page of the book this pschiatrist quotes somebody else. This quote, more or less, says the following: a person will always believe in his own reality, and every view interfering with it will not alter it. My question: what is he trying to say? That Monroe was indeed "insane" and generated all his experiences because he was desperate for meaning in this world? Or that he was bold, defending his claim that his experiences were real to the very end?
Rating: Summary: The Out of Body Classic Review: The classic book by America's first Out of Body expert. This is a fascinating story of Monroe's experiences that started in his early life. Monroe also gives some techniques for achieving out of body. I would recommend all Monroe's Books.
Rating: Summary: Journeys Out of the Body Review Review: This amazing book by Robert Monroe gives the novice a starting point from which to understand what used to be called "astral projection." What I like about this book is the absence of spiritually-oriented professing. The author simply states what happens and how he understands his own experiences. He does not preach. He presents himself as an ordinary human being - something lacking in preceding treatments by other authors. If you have an interest in what might happen to you when you fall alseep, you'll be well pleased with his narrative. It makes a great deal of sense - for those who understand that we cannot possibly take in all that occurs around us. This book is a must for those seeking to understand more about the universe and our place in it. Any who feel unsure of their own significance in the great scheme of things will be afforded the chance to review their attitudes after reading this exceptionally mind-opening book.
Rating: Summary: Truely Life changing! You HAVE to read it!! Review: This book has already answered so many of my questions about life, the purpose of life, and after life, and I haven't even finished it!! It is written in a down to earth easy to understand style and he is compleatly honest. I have no doubt in my mind that every word in this book is the honest to goodness truth. I will be forever greatful to Monroe for this book. It is a clasic that everyone should have the privlage of reading!
Rating: Summary: A Flawed Classic Review: This book has been in print for so many years and read by so many people that it should be considered a classic. I also believe that the book is basically a truthful account of Monroe's experiences because several of those experiences he relates closely parallel my own. For example: I clearly remember as a child being sent to bed for a nap and then finding myself under the bed floating a few inches above the floor while resting on my fingertips. This is not the kind of detail that someone else could dream up independently; but Monroe tells of having that identical experience. However the book does have two major flaws. First: Monroe never seems to have heard of lucid dreams. While other authors, such as Oliver Fox, spend considerable effort to distinguish LD's from true projections, Monroe seem to consider all his nighttime adventures as OBE's. Second: His style is stiff and has a pseudo-scientific air to it. This second criticism is especially unfortunate because, having listened to a number of his tapes, his natural down-to-earth storytelling ability would have made this book more of a pleasure to read. Thats why his book is a flawed classic.
