Rating: Summary: This audio cassette and book are perfect for baby's bedtime. Review: Friday night. It was late, too late, for my 5-year-old daughter, 6-month-old son and me to still be awake. So I put FAVORITE LULLABIES, compiled by Nancy Chusid,on the stereo just loud enough to be heard upstairs, and up we went. Aahhh, peacefulness. (Male and female voices share the leads, singing gently with lovely range, accompanied by the pure sounds of piano, harp, dulcimer, recorder, and a bit of synthesizer.) My daughter fell asleep to "All Night, All Day," my son fell asleep to "Great Big Dog," and I was nearly dozing by "Great Big Stars" (which includes the harmonious sound of young voices in chorus). I have had lullaby tapes before that I couldn't quite trust- just when the baby's eyes were closing, a slightly upbeat song would come on and set back our progress. But FAVORITE LULLABIES flows from one lyrical folk song to the next. Of the 22 traditional tunes, nine were familiar to me (e.g. "Mockingbird," "Kumbayah," and "Michael, Row the Boat Ashore"). I enjoy this sprinkling of songs I can immediately sing along with (you know, to impress the baby) amongst new-to-me's that I can use to enrich my repertoire when the two of us are gently rocking late at night. The cassette tape is accompanied by a music booklet, each song adorably illustrated by Nancy Chusid, which I've used to help learn the new-to-me's. I highly recommend this lullaby collection for parents in need of a little assistance at bed time.
