Rating: Summary: Synopsis Review: A Romanian gymnast at the 1996 Olympic Summer Games in Atlanta was decimated when a roaring crowd drowned out the music for her floor routine. They were roaring for another gymnast, United States' Kerri Strug, who had just completed, on a sprained ankle, a springboard good enough to lock in the U.S. gymnastics team on its first gold medal in history. The noise overpowered the gymnast's hearing and concentration, causing her routine to fall out of rhythm-and consequently fall apart.
Joseph M. Stowell, author of the new book, Following Christ says the roar of families, friends, the media, employers, desires-and even religion-distract many people from Jesus' voice calling "Follow me."
"To look at most of us who call ourselves by His name," says Stowell, "it would be hard to tell that we hear his voice alone and follow it. Our lives are more often than not dictated by our 'want to' voices within and by the most pressing and influential voices around us."
Stowell doesn't deny the difficulty of listening to Christ's call over all the other noises of life, but he assures that "those who have set their hearts to hear His voice and follow have been liberated from the din and frustration of the seductive voices that threaten their destinies."
Following Christ realistically appraises the lesser voices that drown Christ out. It also amplifies His call by examining what it means to be a "follower," describing the compelling nature of the one we follow, and reminding us of the honor of picking up our cross and following Him.
Stowell hopes Following Christ "leads us to embrace and experience the primal call of our Christianity as we learn both what it means to become fully devoted followers of Him and how we can actualize that desire."
Rating: Summary: One of the best Christ-centered books of all time! Review: After working at a Christian bookstore for over two years I have read a large amount of evangelical literature. Rarely have I read a book twice, but with this book I have read it over 6 times! I have bought over 20 copies to give as presents, and continue to recomend it to friends. Stowell has hit the heart of the issue of what it means to be a "Christian", and how we need to re-focus ourselves to be Followers of Christ rather than leaders of a church, etc. Highly recomended to everyone from a non-believer to the veteran, well read, mature believer.
Rating: Summary: excellent reading, for every christian. Review: This book is excellent reading for the Christian,an excellent study book guaranteed to lift your spirits and teach you to follow Christ as He instructed us to do.Indepth. This book touches your heart, soul & mind & will bring you to your knees...
Rating: Summary: A must read for those tired of "arm chair" Christianity Review: Wow! Joseph Stowell challenges you to explore what it means to be a follower of Christ. This is not an easy book to read if you like your comfort zone, but it contains a spectacular and thrilling call to put your life on the line, take up your cross and follow Christ. This is one of those books that challenges your preconcieved ideas of Christianity and life with Christ. I don't think I will ever think of following Christ in the same way again. I highly recommend this book.
