Rating: Summary: Pulled right "into the wilderness".... Review: I picked up my mother's copy of this book one lazy summer afternoon. I honestly didn't really expect to enjoy it since we normally don't share similar book interests, but as I was pulled into the storyline, I found I couldn't put the book down and read until I finished it at 4 am! I fell in love with the passion and chemistry of Elizabeth and Nathaniel against the backdrop of their adventures. A wonderful supporting cast of characters, including the wonderful Curiosity, a freed slave, give the book a well rounded feel. You can almost feel like a member of the small town of Paradise as you learn the townspeople and thier personalities. Truly a wonderful read, well worth the time. I'm off to read the next in the series!
Rating: Summary: Good Escapism, and Historical Fiction Review: I bought this book because I am a lover of historical fiction, and a HUGE fan of the movie "Last of the Mohicans". Prior to reading it I decided to actually READ "Last of the Mohicans". I was a bit disapointed to discover the book is nothing like the movie, and in fact "Into the Wilderness" is really based on the movie, not the book. That is all fine and good with me, because I did love the movie.I enjoyed the novel a great deal. It is good historical fiction, and despite what other reviewers felt, I thought had good character development. Unlike another reviewer, I thought the first half of the book moved fairly well, however the last 1/4 really plodded through, and I didn't quite buy how everything was tied up in a neat package. There were some tragic elements, but only with people you wanted to see dead anyway. I would have liked to see some real tragedy to draw me in emotionaly. Also, the character of Elizabeth Middleton is supposed to be based off of Elizabeth Bennet in "Pride and Prejudice". I was extremly curious to see how this would play out. (what about Mr. Darcy???) She actually did a decent job, but a couple of things irked me. In the beginning of the novel, Donati does a good job of mimicing the language of Jane Austen's character. However, by the end she is speaking like a Native American. Even given these flaws, I did enjoy the novel a great deal, but I can't put it up there with my favorites. If you enjoy the genre of historical fiction/romance, you will love this book. However don't be expecting something along the same literary level as Cooper's "Last of the Mohicans" or any of Austen's novels.
Rating: Summary: CAN'T READ ANOTHER WORD!! Review: This book is really too much. The lack of character development and the romance element between the 2 main characters is so contrived and so seriously flawed it is literally hard to stomach. It has ruined the whole book for me. Here is spinster Elizabeth -- never had a man doesn't want a man (by her own confession) She is ahead of her time -- up on women's rghts, against the constraints of marriage and self righteously against slavery (in 1797!) When she arrives in the wildernessof Paradise, NY she proclaims to her father and the "hero" "I have no intention of marrying, I am perfectly content." Not even TWO DAYS later she is wanting Nathaniel to kiss her ... in fact she dreams about his kisses and thinks about him all the time. Next meeting she is yearning to touch him. (All the while he is flirting and staring) A few very brief meetings later they are quoting "Comfort me with apples for I am sick with love" and she is offering him her money so the Natives can buy Hidden Wolf Mountain --- like they have known each other all their lives. The truth is they know almost nothing about each other, have spent a miniscule amount of time together at this point and ... well how stupid can it get? It is a 1990's harlequin romance fallen into the wilderness of 1797. BLECH. I give this book 2 stars because it had potential. It could have been a beautiful story. Donati does a good job with the overall physical descriptions, her writing flows nicely but the characters ... Ouch. What a disappointment
Rating: Summary: got me into a wilderness Review: I had heard so many people ravelling about this book so I had to buy it. It has been a big disappointment though. The romantic story about Elizabeth Middleton running away with the love of her life, the white mohawk Nathaniel Bonner just didn't grab my interest at all. The book is easy to read, and the language flows quite nicely, but the story is so flat, everything is so predictable. I don't even know if I will manage to finish the book - it has been on my bedside table for months now. Britt Arnhild Lindland
Rating: Summary: Into the Wilderness Review: It's GREAT! I'm having a hard time putting it down!
Rating: Summary: Get Swept Away Review: Incredible novel that grabs your attention and creates beautiful imagery to go with the story. Rent The Last of the Mohicans to go along with this book and you will be entranced by a time, over 200 years ago and the story of these people. Buying this one is money well spent.
Rating: Summary: Perfect for readers of the classics Review: Donati picks up where Cooper's novel "Last Of The Mohicans leaves off, meeting up with Hawkeye and his children and his son's love interest who arrives from England to her father's new home in the New World. Elizabeth discovers herself to be akin to an heiress in land, and her Father pushes her towards the more obvious choice, a fellow landowner and Doctor. Elizabeth's heart is drawn to Nathanial however, Dan'l's son, Chingachgook's grandson, and blood brother to the Mohican's. Elizabeth, something of a bluestocking, wants nothing more than to teach, and so she teaches the children of the area, Indian and settler alike. A highly unpopular decision in the town. Many try to convince her to give it up, including her own father who promised her the teaching position to get her to come to America. Elizabeth has many difficult choices for a strong woman to make. Does she conform to the expectations of a close-knit town or continue to risk complete dissension? Does she reach for love, or for her dream?
Rating: Summary: A Very Awesome and Interesting Book! Review: This book is just awesome; the way Sara Donati wrote it, the actions of the characters, and what the main character, Elizabeth has to go through. Elizabeth Middleton and Nathaniel Bonner are the main characters. Elizabeth is an older teacher who has to move back home because she's having problems. Her father is a judge and her mother is dead. If you like books that have an older time frame, you will like this one. It is in 1972. Nathaniel Boner is an English man, but he was raised by Indians. He and Elizabeth slowly fall in love. If you do not like stories with sexual content, I do not recommend this book. It has a lot of details of what they do and how they do it. All of it seems a little out of place, but it also shows the love the two have for each other. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes romance but doesn't main the sexual part. Into the Wilderness is a very long book; about 900 pages, it is very hard to stop once you start. In the title, you might wonder why it has wilderness in it. Elizabeth has to go find Nathaniel and tell him she wants to marry him instead of a doctor. On the way, she has to overcome many obstacles. Also, one guy gets in the way of their love for one another, a doctor. This story is one that will make you sad, happy, and cry!

Rating: Summary: I am now a Donati Fanatic Review: When I first picked up this book, I didn't realize it was a 'sequel' to Last of the Mohicans. YUCK, I groan, and read it anyways. About 100 pages in I'm toting the book everywhere with me, reading it on coffee breaks, at traffic jams, on lunch hour, before work, after work, during meetings, etc. You get the idea. The story is your typical sweet 'romance' idea. City girl moves to the country to teach school and meets a boy. Only that's where the 'normal' stops and the breathtaking begins. Donati doesn't waste any time. Directly into the first chapter, we meet Elizabeth and her man, Nathaniel. Donati's prose is so compelling that you immediately /know/ how she wants her characters pictured just from a few simple words. Read the opening paragraph again--you'll see what I mean. The characters are what truly make this book memorable. I laughed at Elizabeth's pert words and ready blushes, and could relate to her unfamiliarness in the wilderness. I cried at Nathaniel's earnest charm, his teasing humor, and his steadfast loyalty to his family. This is a book where the 'back-scene' characters shine as well. Hannah is a gem. Many Doves and Runs-From-Bears will have you starry-eyed over their romance as well. I really can't say enough good things about Sara Donati. Usually when I take the time to write a review about a book, it's because I dislike it so much I want to warn the other readers away. I want to warn you TOWARDS this one! Run out to the store and get it. I promise you'll love it.
