Rating: Summary: Best Book I ever read Review: By interweaving hilarious moments with bittersweet reality, Ms. Medoff has created a novel that is so startling and so refreshing, I couldn't wait to share it with my friends. I've read so many reviews of this novel and every one was stellar. I LOVED THIS BOOK and I agree with everyone who gave this book five stars!
Rating: Summary: loved it, loved it, loved it!!!! Review: This was one of the best books I've read in a very long time! Thank God for the very few Gen-X writers we have, and please, God, send us some more! Medoff captures perfectly the angst and anxiety of people our age (mid to late twenties). Us "losers" who haven't quite made it to mom and dads Ozzie and Harriet, pseudo perfect lives. We have problems, we have disorders (like anorexia and panic attacks) and yes we are incredibly immature and irresponsible, but at least we HAVE FUN! I was thrilled with the ending (don't worry, I won't give it away - except to say that Frannie does eventually manage to get it together slightly, but not so much that she gets boring!). Anyway, my only request now would be that Medoff write many many more wonderful books!
Rating: Summary: Good portrayal of how eating disorders affect families. Review: I am a psychologist who works with college students, and I felt that this book offered a fairly accurate portrayal of the devastating effects that an eating disorder can have on a family. In particular, Medoff does a nice job of communicating the hopelessness experienced by other family members. However, I found it difficult at times to feel sympathy for the main character, Frannie--her brash style sometimes rubbed me the wrong way. Despite this, I think that those people who know someone with an eating disorder will relate to and appreciate this book.
Rating: Summary: Best book my friends and I have read all year Review: My girlfriends and I all agree this is the best book we've read in a long time. I recommend it all the time to other women--it's really not a book that men will relate to very much, I think. The characters are fabulous and interesting, and the dynamic in the family is believable. I found that many of the themes and situations depicted resonated in my own life. I can't wait for another novel from this incredibly talented author! If I could write a book, this would be it...
Rating: Summary: The best book I've read in a while Review: I enjoyed this book very much. It made me laugh and cry. I actually felt like the book was about my own life. I think that the author, Jillian Medoff, has a wonderful way with a pen and cannot wait for her next book. She wrote one of those books that you just can't put down no matter how hard you try. She has a great future as a writer.
Rating: Summary: This book was moving and extremely thought provoking. Review: The true horror of anorexia hits home in this thought provoking and moving story, told by the sister of an anorectic. Frannie's sister, Rochelle, fades away before Frannie's eyes, slowly killing herself, and taking more than just her own life. Her death leaves Frannie with a lifetime of guilt, sorrow, and pain. As Frannie attempts to prevail, the reader becomes caught up in a heart rending struggle for victory. I recommend this book highly.
Rating: Summary: i'm left awe-struck Review: this book was unbelieveable. I was through the book before I knew it had bugun. I could barley put it down. I read it on a 26 hour train ride and was up all night reading. The book grasped me and held me untill the very last page. The moment I finished the last page, i turned to page one and started reading it all over again. A great book all around
Rating: Summary: Funny, sad, utterly compelling characters..... Review: At first i didnt know if i was going to be able to get through this book, not because the subject matter, but the delicious looking cake on the cover. But within a few pages, i easily forgot the cover as i was drawn into Frannie's dysfunctional life. Right from the start it is easy to see how the two girls are made to be self conciuos about every morsel put in their mouths. I cringed every time Franny remembered her mother telling her not to eat something that would make her fat. For whatever reason, Shelley is the one who seems to take it the most to heart, and anorexia slowly becomes the reality of this family. As we see Shelley struggle to find herself in something other than the disease of anorexia, we also see the family struggle to understand the stranger who is supposed to be a member of their family, not that this family is anything but an array of dysfunctions. The story carries you along to Frannies next "rat boy" and you can relate if your a woman, to Charlie, where you will see her grab at the chance to start finding real happiness in her life. Frannie's voice is so powerful, her words startling and funny, you cant do anything but cheer for her the whole way through. One dislike, the only, and its minor, we were left hanging on if Shelley was really raped or not, it may or may not have to do with her developing anorexia, but i felt that was a loose thread. Other than that, a great read, an unflinching look at one family and their struggle to find "normal."
Rating: Summary: Eye-opening, heartbreaking and soul-searching- loved it Review: This book touched me in so many places- I think everyone can relate to Frannie and even Shelly at some time- it made me laugh out loud and it made me ache inside at times- but it was very inspirational and basically I couldnt put it down.
Rating: Summary: I Highly Recommend This Novel Review: From beginning to end, I was so interested in these characters and their stories. They became very real to me. For me this book is sort of a snapshot in how it portrays what some people do (so often women in particular) in their search to find love, feel loved, and gain control in their lives. Each character was searching in their own way and I related to them all. The first time I read it I was overcome with sadness, the second time I was struck by the humor and warmth. I look forward to this author's next novel.
