Summary: GREAT story!
Review: And not too sensual. Sure, there's the longing that goes with courtship, but we are spared the intimate details. If you love a good story, but prefer not to read about throbbing body parts, read this book. If you think good novels have to have sex, then keep looking cuz the details in this book are left to the reader's imagination. This is a nice mystery, lovable characters, and a great story line. :)

Summary: Irish (Not So) Gold
Review: I hate to be the only negative voice in a chorus of enthusiastic reviews but, if the story of Michael Collins hadn't been involved, this book would have made me gag before I got through the first fifty pages. I found the cutsey "Irish" dialogue to be cloying and the perfection of the heroine, gushingly described at every opportunity, to be not only unbelievable but irritating. Both of these flaws interfered with the smooth flow of the story, which, without them, would have been pretty engrossing.

Summary: Too Perfect
Review: I like many of Andrew Greeley's books (Patience of a Saint is a favorite of mine), but I couldn't like this book as much as some of his others because I found Nuala altogether too perfect. Greeley's female characters are almost universally beautiful (goes without saying), strong of character, and usually very successful, but Nuala was just a bit beyond the pale for perfection for me. Really, she was described in such unrelentingly rapturous terms I couldn't get beyond it. How about some praise for our hero Dermot?

Oh, well, probably just jealous. Call it sour grapes!

Summary: Terrific Read
Review: I picked up this book on a whim, it didn't look like the kind of book I normally would read, then I remembered "Don't judge a book by it's cover." :-) I read the first chapter and couldn't put it down. Engaging characters, good plot, and good use of History. The only bad thing I can say about this book is that it distracted me from concentraiting on my work. LOL!!

WELL worth buying

Summary: Redundant
Review: I was excited to finally get around to Greeley's Nuala Anne McGrail Novels. After all, I'm Catholic and of Irish descent. At first, I was not disappointed. Irish Gold started out fine and I thought Greeley had a good handle on things Irish, the vernacular of Dublin, interesting characters, and a compelling historical story line. Having just finished Irish Lace (the 2nd of the series), I don't think I can continue hearing the same meager themes pressed over and over and over- and I suspect such is the extent of Fr. Greeley's repertoire. How many times does one need to read the words to "Molly Malone," after all? One particularly distasteful reoccurring theme is Greeley's preclusion to bash Republicans and champion thoroughly discredited liberal views at every opportunity. Maybe the world looked differently to the author when this book was published in 1994, but I'll wager Fr. Greeley sees the country in 2005 as having been taken over by "those evil Republicans." Well, I guess one cannot argue with success, but my opinion is that the success can be attributed to reader's low expectations rather than Greeley's writing acumen. I cannot recommend this series of novels.

Summary: Irish Gold
Review: It is a great love story and a bit of history one can learn a great deal from. I've fallen in love with the characters and history, and me being a"prod" at that! Thank you Andrew M. Greeley for a reprieve from my albeit, rewarding days of mothering. It is nice to read of such grand loving characters in my nights!
