Rating: Summary: Can I make it a true Daily Double? Review: Being a big Jeopardy fan, I loved the fact that there were some Final Jeopardy questions thrown in. :-) Wonder if Alexandra is named for Alex Trebek? Will Jeopardy be a constant theme in all her books?Alex Cooper is a nice character. Wouldn't mind meeting her. Why wouldn't she date that detective though? I'm not sure that was ever clear to me. I mean, after she broke up with her boyfriend, that is. The plot twist at the end was great. Did not see that one coming at all. But I guess I still don't like the boyfriend for what he did. The scumbag! Cooper deserved better. Yes, this is nitpicky, but she claims to be an English major from Wellesley, and yet calls the Alumnae Association the Alumni Association??? Yikes! It's Alumnae because Wellesley is all women! Well, other than that, I mostly enjoyed the book.
Rating: Summary: Decided to go back and read the first one... Review: Even though most mystery writers give a little past history in the first few pages of their new books, the information I kept getting in the next three books of Fairstein's novels about an ADA who works in sex crimes division on behalf of the victims...well it wasn't enough, and I felt I needed more knowledge obviously given in the first book in order to tie the series into a whole. For Fairstein's first book she did an admirable job. This area of criminology tends to scare me off...and there are some writers of mysteries who write about children and abuse, and I just out refuse to read them. Fairstein handles this area with great delicacy...she doesn't make the readers go through every traumatic incident. If she did, I would never have made it this far in the series. I especially like the characterization of Fairstein. The plot is important but way too often do writers forget to fill out their characters and make them three-dimensional. This is not a problem here. As a real ADA Fairstein has dealt with the good, the bad, and the ugly, and she is able to give the readers a real 'feel' for the person she is talking about. The ridiculous betting done between Cooper and her cop friend Mike over the final question in Jeopardy is a hoot, and a realistic trait that I sure someone does somewhere. The title can be seen to have more then one meaning because of this/ Other reviewers have given a bit about the plot line so I won't do it. One thing, if this is Fairstein's first book, she definitely gets better as she goes along. Very enjoyable series. Karen Sadler
Rating: Summary: Just a plain ol' good legal thriller Review: I listened to this as a book on tape - more on that aspect at the end.
Fairstein has written a solid legal thriller. The characters are solid and interesting but not over-developed. The plot is quick, but not barebones. Some of the characters are quirky, but not too quirky. The bad guy is bad but not an over-the-top monster. Fairstein has done a good job of creating her character's world so that it can be explored at greater depth in subsequent books.
The reader of the book on tape, Diane Venora, did an excellent job of creating different pacings and tones and accents for each of the characters. However, in the production room something must have been off because there was so much bass that I had to completely turn it off on my car stereo - it made things so deep that it hurt to listen to it.
Rating: Summary: Meet Alexandra Cooper..... Review: New York City Assistant District Attorney in charge of sex crimes, Alexandra Cooper, couldn't believe her eyes. There on the front page of the Post was her obituary under the headline "SEX PROSECUTOR SLAIN-FBI, STATE TROOPERS JOIN SEARCH FOR KILLER." What the police didn't know, was that she had loaned her secluded, Martha's Vinyard beach house to beautiful actress and friend, Isabella Lascar. Isabella had said she needed a solitary retreat to read scripts and regroup. The shooting had taken place along the house's winding drive, and the shotgun blast to the face had made identification impossible, so the authorities naturally assumed it had to be Alex. But who was the real target, Alex or Isabella? As Alex and her favorite sidekick, Homicide Detective, Mike Chapman, begin their investigation, they wonder if this could this be a case of mistaken identity, and if so, was Alex in danger, and would the murderer try again? If not, who else, if anyone, knew that Isabella was going to be staying at the beach house, and why would they want her dead.....? Linda Fairstein has written a well-paced, legal thriller that sets you on the edge of your seat, and promises to keep you there until the very last page. Her well crafted, compelling plot is full of twists and turns, intriguing scenes and strong, interesting characters. But it's her indepth knowledge of the legal system and D.A's office, and her expertise in prosecuting sex crimes, that really makes this novel stand out. With a suspenseful ending that brings all the story lines together, and ties them up into a very satisfying package, Final Jeopardy is the beginning of a terrific series that mystery/thriller fans shouldn't miss. So turn off the phone, and lock the door, Alexandra Cooper and company are about to keep you up reading all night.
Rating: Summary: Fair story, poor prose Review: This book was my first introduction to Linda Fairstein. I'm more of a Patricia Cornwell fan. Overall, the book reminded me of tv shows Law & Order SVU and CSI. I had a hard time getting into the book at first, but quickly eased into Linda's writing style. The story flowed pretty quickly and smoothly, although the main character came across a little "dim-witted" between the middle and end of the book. The only odd thing I've noticed about Linda's books is that they aren't listed in order from book to book. I had to go to her web site to make sure I followed the proper order.
Rating: Summary: Not Bad Review: This is an interesting murder mystery featuring an Assistant D.A. named Alexandra Cooper whose specialty is sex crimes. A starlet is murdered in the driveway of Cooper's Martha's Vineyard house, and it's up to Cooper to figure out what happened and who's guilty before the same thing happens to her.
The plot has some interesting turns, and it stays on the proper side of the plausibility line throughout. Cooper manages to juggle several cases at once while keeping her personal life going, and she even goes down a few dead ends in her investigation. Nevertheless, this isn't the kind of book where you flounder around for the first hundred pages while the author develops the characters; instead each character has a distinct personality and the plot gets moving from the very first page. It will definitely hold your interest. Well done, Fairstein.
Rating: Summary: Lots of pulp, lots of fun. Review: This is the first book in one of my favorite series! I initially purchased the book because of its name, 'Final Jeopardy', my husband and I being fans of the show. I was happy to learn that Fairstein does include Jeopardy questions as part of the challenging relationship between Alexandra Cooper, NYC Assistant District Attorney for Sex Crimes, and Mike Chapman, the NYC Police Detective who investigates most of her cases. Their repartee is a big part of the success of this series. Another enjoyable aspect of this series is the stories from Fairstein's long and successful career as (surprise) Assistant District Attorney for sex crimes in NYC. Fairstein's knowledge of the law and the city contribute to the realism in her books and characters. This first book in the series will be just the start of your reading pleasure.

Rating: Summary: Excellent behind the scenes look at an assistant DA. Review: This was a pretty good book. It is an excellent dipiction of what happens in the "sex crime unit" as an assistant district attorney. The story line was pretty decent as well. Alexandra is an assistant DA in the "sex crime unit" in NY. Her actress friend borrows her place on Martha's Vineyard and while she is there, she is murdered. At first the authorities think the murder was mistaken identity (should have been Alex) but as it turns out it wasn't. With a few twists and turns, the book continues nicely coming full circle at the end. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
