Summary: Unless you enjoy essays....don't read this
Review: The book is compromised of a series of essays about his life but I didn't think David Sedaris got his point across in this book. Or if he did, it flew right over my head. The stories were cute and funny but not at all moving like I was told they would be. A book that would be enjoyed by those that enjoy a book filled with short stories/essays.

Summary: One of the funniest books I've ever read
Review: This is one of the books out there that deserves more than 5 stars. I have read this book multiple times, and every time it makes me laugh. Crafting humor in the written word is a difficult task, and to me it seems that many of the humor books published today are quite negative, condescending, or esoteric. David Sedaris charmingly avoids these pitfalls and crafts humor out of the ordinary which is original, self-effacing, insightful, and perennially funny. His perspective on the world is at once accessible to resonate with everyday experience, and sufficiently skewed to be laugh out loud funny. I have read many other books of this genre, but David Sedaris is far and away the best. His other books, Naked, Barrel Fever, and Holidays on Ice are all worthwhile reads, but Me Talk Pretty One Day is a wonderful place to start. Its simplicity, deft use of language, and unabashed comedic styling will leave you wanting to read all of his work.

Summary: David Sedaris is great fun
Review: David Sedaris has some great stories to tell, from his encounter with his speech therapist in grade school to being called a "dirty froggy" on the Paris Metro. If you are literate and you obviously are because you are reading this, click the button that says "BUY" now. You won't regret it. (Plus having this book in your collection will impress your indie friends).

Summary: Fragmented
Review: This book- the first I've read by this author- made me laugh out loud. "Jesus Shaves" in particular was absolutely hilarious for me, someone who lived in another country, struggled through learning a second language, and now teaches it. However, I found the book to lack overall structure and coherence- it was so fragmented that it was difficult to see the entire picture, to understand how the author developed and grew as a person. It almost seemed to me that this would actually have been better as two books instead of one- the first, a growing up dysfunctional sort of story, the second, an exploration of culture and identity. This would also have given the author a chance to more fully develop the other characters in the story- his parents, siblings, and boyfriend- as is, many of them are sketchy at best. Still, despite the lack of organization, I really enjoyed reading this book, and would definitely consider reading more by this author.

Summary: A cure for the fear of flying.
Review: Sedaris will have you laughing out loud. This is pure satire from a gifted mind. I read this on the airplane recently and I completely forgot to be nervous or afraid. I was laughing so hard, I had to run to that tiny bathroom. Other passengers must have wondered if I was on drugs... It's just that funny.

Summary: steady slope
Review: as a fan of david sedaris from this american life, i was ready to devour this book from the moment it entered my hands. the problem was, i just couldn't chug it down. havinf heard several of the early stories read for that show, david's voice in my head kept preventing me from reading without distraction. i also noticed that many of his essays take on more life when he read them than when i was. luckily, this changed as i read on. by the time i got to the later stories from france, the ball was rolling and i was in stitches.

Summary: A humourous example of pure talent
Review: David Sedaris has proven himself a very talented writer. His insights into French life, speech impediments, and even eating ones hat are among the funniest I've ever read. ME TALK PRETTY ONE DAY is a must read for fans of satire, France, and anyone who wants to laugh uproariously.

Sedaris tells many stories on varied topics. Whether he is discussing his speech impediment i.e. a lisp or Americans on a Paris subway, he does so wonderfully. Sedaris crafts his words magically to compose a hilarious story each time around. Few writers can do as he has done. Anyone who appreciates humour and writing as an art form will love this book.

If you disapprove of foul language, sensitive topics such as AIDS, or mockeries of the French language, this book is not for you. Including these things is a must in the overall craft and perfection of Sedaris' work. It is advisable to merely overlook these things if they bother you. If you cannot overlook such things, you deprive yourself of a wonderful reading experience.

This book is utterly delightful. Nearly every one of the pages has something to make the reader cry from laughter. One can only hope that Sedaris will publish more books of this magnitude. For if he does not, he will rob the world of 'pretty' funny stories. Buy ME TALK PRETTY ONE DAY and be prepared to laugh often.

Summary: Hilarious!
Review: I LOVE David Sedaris. I have all of his books, and tape him when he's on NPR. I think of all of his books of essays, this is the one that's best-organized, and best-structured. His views and insights remind me of my best friend. During times like these, it's good to have some comic relief, and as far as books go, this is my choice. My favorite essays in this book are "Youth in Asia", "Big Boy", "Picka Pocketoni", and "Jesus Shaves".

Summary: Did I miss something
Review: I guess I missed something when I read this book. I didn't find it funny at all.... in fact... I never laughed to myself let alone out loud. I was highly disappointed in this book. Having never read any other of his works so I have nothing to compare this to, I would not buy any other of his works.
