Rating: Summary: Me like Review: Why not ten stars? This is by far, hands down, the funniest book I have ever read. Naked and Barrel Fever follow right behind. The descriptions of the French language in Me Talk Pretty are hysterical and my favorite story in the book had to be the one with the speech therapist. You can't go wrong with a book this clever. Would also recommend McCrae's BARK OF THE DOGWOOD
Rating: Summary: Truth and Humor Review: David Sedaris is just simply an incredible writer, bringing his own life to "life" with truth and humor. The book is poignant and prolific-even at times halarious. Well worth a high rating! Other Memoir/Autobiographies to read are: Name All The Animals,Nightmares Echo,Running with Scissors,All of David Sedaris books and the series of David Pelzer Books. Excellent work Authors!
Rating: Summary: The best of the best Review: Sedaris's best work by far is this book, Me Talk Pretty One day. I've read everything the guy has written, but this one takes the prize. If you don't laugh non-stop while reading this, run, don't walk to the doctor and have a check-up as you may not still be breathing. Also try J. McCrae's book, Bark of the Dogwood--A Tour of Southern Homes and Gardens--equally funny, or read Sedaris's other books: Naked, Barrel Fever, or Holidays on Ice.
Rating: Summary: hilarious book Review: This was one of the funniest books that I have read in a very long time. Rarely does a book have me laughing outloud as this one did.
Rating: Summary: Savor the laughter!!! Review: I have taken my sweet time getting to the end of this book. And now I am rewarded for my efforts. Sedaris's 'Dress your family...' is about to arrive on June 1st. HIP HIP HOORAY!!!! 'Me talk pretty...' is so WONDERFULLY REFRESHING. I have taken a lot of time to get through it because I just don't want it to end. But NOW I can finish it and enjoy a new Sedaris book in just a few days. 'Naked' was my first introduction to Sedaris and I found myself laughing even harder with 'Me talk pretty one day'. He depicts his life adventures (trully that is what they are) with such dry humor that you will indeed find yourself laughing in public, if you chose to venture outdoors with his books. The reader should be warned! I LOVE DAVID SEDARIS!!! BUY HIS BOOKS, NOW. (Except for 'Barrel Fever', not as funny.)
Rating: Summary: One of The Funniest Books....Ever! Review: This is one of the best books I've come across in a long long time! His next book will say "Author of Naked, Me Talk Pretty One Day, and all of the best!" or "Just read it ... you'll like it!". After reading the first few chapters, I had to start my search for all of his other books! His stories are amazing and funny accounts of his life, which has been blessed with a comedic family and interesting events. There are about two chapters that I thought had parts that dragged, but they were very small parts. Other than that, I couldn't put the book down. In the middle of the book ("Big Boy") there is a story that spans only a few pages but had me in tears laughing and holding my stomach. I made my whole family read it and although they are not as into comedy as I am, they loved it and had the same reaction. Sedaris is one of the best comic writers of all time. Another very funny, very smart book I'd like to recommend is WILL@epicqwest.com by Tom Grimes, satiric and hilarious -- a total winner.
Rating: Summary: Sedaris At His Best Review: Sedaris' take on everyday life, work, growing up in the south with decidedly northern parents, and life as an American living in Paris is an amazingly witty and entertaining read. His observations on the obsurdity of everyday life is often much more entertaining than his ficitonal essays, like those that fill the majority of one of Sedaris' other books Barrel Fever.
Rating: Summary: Pretty, interesting and useful Review: I recommend that you dash out and purchase a copy of Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris. I've been reading this one, snuggled under my duvet, and it's hysterical. David takes us on a comic journey growing up in the deep south of the USA, then though many tragicomic adventures as he follows boyfriend, Hugh, to Paris. Good books are often pretty, interesting and useful. This one defiantly qualifies for all three.
Rating: Summary: A funny little treat... Review: (...) This book took me a while to get through because I constantly was rereading various chapters to friends and family members, so once I finally finished it, I had literally read some of the essays 3 or 4 times. Maybe that's what added to the time spent on it. Sedaris is a very talented writer, and while the critics comments on the back of the book may be a bit over the top ("wildly entertaining" seems a little too complimentary for a book of essays, even if they are hilarious at times--when I think of "wildly entertaining," I think of other things...not reading something that's very funny). All that said and done, most people free enough to think and relate to what it being human really means should resonate with much of Sedaris' thoughts. His take on Americans in France, and french theaters and American movie theaters made me want to pack my bags and head to Paris. Also, his crossword puzzle-obsession and subway-story regarding two Americans who mistake him for a pick-pocket is among the book's many treasures. Once you read it, you'll find yourself remembering Sedaris' voice within his stories, and that is what makes it even more funny. It might not stand out to you as you read it as much, but give it a day or two, and I'm sure you'll be talking to friends about how much you loved "Me Talk Pretty One Day." Thanks Dave for a great time!
Rating: Summary: No need to wait for a day in the future Review: Forget "pretty,"Sedaris talks "funny" and we need more writers like him. Thanks for the memories.
