Summary: Haunting
Review: Ms. Sebold obviously knows rape. In the very first chapter she kills off her main character with a chillingly familiar man whose past is blurred with abuse and ominously lifeless memories.
Heaven could have been written better, since obviously she knew exactly where to come from in other aspects. I remember reading this book and not being able to put it down-- I'd read in class, between class, at lunch, in the car ride home, and att through the night until I had it finished: unless, of course, I hit a spot in the book that colored me wrong and I had to pause in order to calm down. My imagination often runs wild, you see.
Anyways, this book struck me hard-- I have had to deal with healing from disasters as such; I've have do deal with a crumbling family out of my grasp. This book hit the soft spot-- and clung there until far after I closed the back flap.

Summary: A Stunning & Beautiful Story
Review: I was completely blown away by this book. Sebold tells the story from the point of view of a dead girl, beginning with her murder, and ending 10 years later, as the protagonist views her family from heaven. The story is told in an extremely poignant fashion without becoming a tear-jerker or an overly emotional "statement on the human existence."The story itself, the plot, the characters, and the narrative style are portrayed very intelligently, though there is nothing pretentious about it. The scenic descriptions are sublime, and there is suspense involved, though this isn't in any way a mystery. The characters are slowly, but fully, developed, and the passage of time is shown with a light hand. I will read every book Sebold writes.

Review: Well I agree with the rest of you on this...I bought the book because I kept seeing it on the best-seller list. I kinda read what it was about, but wondered what all the hype was??? I wasn't real thrilled with it at all. A dog finding nothing but her elbow? Is that supposed to be funny? I didn't even pass it on to anybody in my family. They would probably find me "strange" for even attempting to get into a novel like that.

Summary: lovely book
Review: my first thought was how morbid, to write a book about the abduction and murder of a 14 year old. however the story is not morbid, it is quite interesting. i love how alice sebold explores all facets of the effects of the death of this girl, how each individual family member, friend and teachers lives are impacted. also the perception of heaven is very intriguing. all in all i loved the book and could not put it down until i was done reading it.

Review: The Lovely Bones is written on a fifth-grade level. The characters are one-dimensional and the dialogue is awkward and pedestrian. This is the only book I've ever read where the author starts the book with a certain cadence to her prose and never veers from it. Unbelievable that she could maintain the same boring rhythm throughout the book by having every sentence march to the same beat. There also seems to be a notable lack of vocabulary. Maybe the idea was to have everything sound like it was coming from the land of the dead. The author succeeded in that respect. The book reads more like a first-draft produced by a novice rather than a book written by a professional. If I had written it myself, I would have been too embarrassed to submit it to a publisher.

Summary: All About a New Book Group
Review: During my first year as a college student, my interpreting literature class our professor divided us into eight different groups. Our group chose to read "The Lovely Bones" by Alice Sebold. We chose the book because it was going to be interesting and sounded interesting. I enjoyed the book very much and the suspence of finding the killer kept my interest. I also thought that the author showed an excellent point of view. She shows susie, the main character, can see down on earth from heaven. When we talked in the group we talked deeply about our opinions about heaven and hell. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading and thinking about heaven.

Summary: The "6th Sense" Taken Up a Notch
Review: Dear readers: Did you like the movie "The 6th Sense"? Do you have trouble with the standard portrayal of heaven? If you answered yes to either of these questions, then you will probably enjoy this book very much. I did. I don't have much time to read, so I tend to seek out books that will give me hope, inspire me, or make me laugh. This promised to be a sad little book, but instead it gave me hope, inspired me, and sometimes, even made me laugh. I'm still not sure why I read a book like this, but I'm glad I did.

Summary: An Emotion for Everyone
Review: Alice Sebold's The Lovely Bones is a story created around the murder of a young girl, Susie Salmon. Susie serves as the omniscient narrator in heaven after her murder and from her view the reader is opened into the many different lives of her family and friends as they grow and change from her death. Through Sebold's use of characters, she creates a beautiful and interesting novel. Each character holds a special tie with Susie and through their past relationships we are able to see a part of them, but more importantly a glimpse of Susie. The reader is given the opportunity to observe the past, yet still follow the present. Although Sebold's use of characters lies as the most dominate device used in her work, she also cleverly weaves in some foreshadowing. She cunningly leaves the reader in suspense as they remain immersed in her book. Through Sebold's simple style and the interesting point of view the story is told, we are clearly able to see Sebold's message of life after death. I feel I thoroughly enjoyed this book because it contained every motion. There were times of joy, sorrow, love, and sympathy. These mixed emotions make it an enjoyable read that would entertain a variety of audiences.
